The Role of Chemical and Visual Cues in Agonistic Interactions of the American Lobster

Wild social behavior differs following experimental loss of vision in social hermit crabs

Even for animals with multiple senses at their disposal, there may be a strong reliance on a single sense, like vision, for social behavior. Experimentally blocking or eliminating vision offers a powerful means of testing impacts on social behavior, though few studies have followed experimentally blinded individuals in the wild to test potential changes in social behavior in natural settings. Here we conducted experiments with social hermit crabs (Coenobita compressus), applying opaque material overtop their eyes to temporarily blind individuals. We then released these experimentally blinded individuals and non-blinded control individuals into the wild as well as into captive social settings. Compared to control individuals, experimentally blinded individuals initiated significantly fewer social contacts with conspecifics in the wild. These experimentally blinded individuals were not, however, differentially targeted by conspecifics. Interestingly, unlike the wild experiments, the captive experiments showed no differences in social behavior between experimentally blinded and non-blinded control individuals, suggesting that experiments in natural settings in the wild may be essential to fully unraveling impacts of blindness on social behavior. Broadly, for social animals that are highly reliant on the visual modality, social behavior may change dramatically if they lose their vision.

Exploring with damaged antennae: do crayfish compensate for injuries?

Appendages are important sources of sensory information for all animals that possess them but they are commonly damaged in nature. We describe how the tactile system of the crayfish Cherax destructor functioned when subjected to the kind of damage found in wild-caught or cultured animals. Touch information was methodically varied by the removal of antennae and chelae. The resulting behaviour was analysed in a T-maze. Crayfish with a single antenna ablated turned toward the intact appendage, however, those with only a partial ablation did not, suggesting that a tactile information threshold exists for normal behaviour. When exposed to the same environment after an antennal ablation but with no prior experience in that terrain, crayfish also turned toward the side of the intact antenna. By contrast, when animals with experience obtained in a previous trial with intact antennae were tested after ablation of one antenna, they did not turn into one arm of the maze more than the other. These two outcomes indicate that behaviour is affected by an interaction between the time at which an injury occurs and an animal's knowledge of the topography, and that an injury may affect learning. We also tested to see if other appendages could provide tactile information to compensate for antennal loss. Input from the chelae did not affect the turning behaviour of crayfish in the maze.

Individual recognition and memory in lobster dominance

American lobsters, Homarus americanus, form stable dominance relationships in captivity. Size, sex and stage in the moult cycle are important determinants for dominance. Other factors, such as recent agonistic experience play a role. This paper investigates how lobsters maintain their stable dominance relationships: they may recognize individuals or alternatively, recognize overall dominance status. We paired lobsters in two consecutive 'boxing matches'. Results indicate that lobsters remember familiar opponents when kept either in isolation or in communal tanks for 24 h between their first and second fights. Subordinates immediately backed away from familiar dominants, avoiding a second fight. In some animals, this memory lasted between 1-2 weeks if pairs were kept separate between the first and second fights. When paired for the second fight against unfamiliar dominant lobsters, subordinate lobsters from first fights actively fought and won the encounter. These results suggest that lobsters are capable of 'individual recognition'. In nature, the observed social organization of lobsters may be maintained by individual recognition of a small number of residents inhabiting separate, nearby shelters.
