THE EXTRAGALACTIC BACKGROUND LIGHT, THE HUBBLE CONSTANT, AND ANOMALIES: CONCLUSIONS FROM 20 YEARS OF TeV GAMMA-RAY OBSERVATIONS

Very high-energy gamma-ray emission beyond 10 TeV from GRB 221009A

The highest-energy gamma-rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have important implications for their radiation mechanism. Here we report the detection of gamma-rays up to 13 teraelectronvolts from the brightest GRB 221009A by the Large High Altitude Air-shower Observatory (LHAASO). The LHAASO-KM2A detector registered more than 140 gamma-rays with energies above 3 teraelectronvolts during 230 to 900 seconds after the trigger. The intrinsic energy spectrum of gamma-rays can be described by a power-law after correcting for extragalactic background light absorption. Such a hard spectrum challenges the synchrotron self-Compton scenario of relativistic electrons for the afterglow emission above several teraelectronvolts. Observations of gamma-rays up to 13 teraelectronvolts from a source with a measured redshift of z = 0.151 hints more transparency in intergalactic space than previously expected. Alternatively, one may invoke new physics such as Lorentz invariance violation or an axion origin of very high-energy signals.

Axion-like Particles Implications for High-Energy Astrophysics

We offer a pedagogical introduction to axion-like particles (ALPs) as far as their relevance for high-energy sstrophysics is concerned, from a few MeV to 1000 TeV. This review is self-contained, in such a way to be understandable even to non-specialists. Among other things, we discuss two strong hints at a specific ALP that emerge from two very different astrophysical situations. More technical matters are contained in three Appendices.

Gamma-Ray Cosmology and Tests of Fundamental Physics

The propagation of gamma-rays over cosmological distances is the subject of extensive theoretical and observational research at GeV and TeV energies. The mean free path of gamma-rays in the cosmic web is limited above 100 GeV due to the production of electrons and positrons on the cosmic optical and infrared backgrounds. Electrons and positrons cool in the intergalactic medium while gyrating in its magnetic fields, which could cause either its global heating or the production of lower-energy secondary gamma-rays. The energy distribution of gamma-rays surviving the cosmological journey carries observed absorption features that gauge the emissivity of baryonic matter over cosmic time, constrain the distance scale of ΛCDM cosmology, and limit the alterations of the interaction cross section. Competitive constraints are, in particular, placed on the cosmic star-formation history as well as on phenomena expected from quantum gravity and string theory, such as the coupling to hypothetical axion-like particles or the violation of Lorentz invariance. Recent theoretical and observational advances offer a glimpse of the multi-wavelength and multi-messenger path that the new generation of gamma-ray observatories is about to open.

Probing Quantum Gravity with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

High energy photons from astrophysical sources are unique probes for some predictions of candidate theories of Quantum Gravity (QG). In particular, Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACTs) are instruments optimised for astronomical observations in the energy range spanning from a few tens of GeV to ∼100 TeV, which makes them excellent instruments to search for effects of QG. In this article, we will review QG effects which can be tested with IACTs, most notably the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) and its consequences. It is often represented and modelled with photon dispersion relation modified by introducing energy-dependent terms. We will describe the analysis methods employed in the different studies, allowing for careful discussion and comparison of the results obtained with IACTs for more than two decades. Loosely following historical development of the field, we will observe how the analysis methods were refined and improved over time, and analyse why some studies were more sensitive than others. Finally, we will discuss the future of the field, presenting ideas for improving the analysis sensitivity and directions in which the research could develop.

Photon–Photon Interactions and the Opacity of the Universe in Gamma Rays

We discuss the topic of the transparency of the Universe in gamma rays due to extragalactic background light, and its cosmological and physical implications. Rather than a review, this is a personal account on the development of 30 years of this branch of physical science. Extensive analysis of the currently available information appears to us as revealing a global coherence among the astrophysical, cosmological, and fundamental physics data, or, at least, no evident need so far of substantial modification of our present understanding. Deeper data from future experiments will verify to what extent and in which directions this conclusion should be modified.

Leptonic and Hadronic Radiative Processes in Supermassive-Black-Hole Jets

Supermassive black holes lying in the center of galaxies can launch relativistic jets of plasma along their polar axis. The physics of black-hole jets is a very active research topic in astrophysics, owing to the fact that many questions remain open on the physical mechanisms of jet launching, of particle acceleration in the jet, and on the radiative processes. In this work I focus on the last item, and present a review of the current understanding of radiative emission processes in supermassive-black-hole jets.

Bounds on Relativistic Deformed Kinematics from the Physics of the Universe Transparency

We analyze the kinematics of electron-positron production in a photon-photon interaction when one has a modification of the special relativistic kinematics as a power expansion in the inverse of a new high-energy scale. We derive the equation for the threshold energy of this reaction to first order in this expansion, including the effects due to a modification of the energy-momentum conservation equation. In contrast with the Lorentz invariance violation case, a scale of the order of a few TeV is found to be compatible with the observations of very high-energy cosmic gamma rays in the case of a modification compatible with the relativity principle.

Lorentz Invariance Violation Tests in Astroparticle Physics

In this review, we present the latest exclusion limits obtained from astroparticles on Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) in the photon sector. We discuss the techniques known as energy-dependent time delay or time lag, subluminal pair production threshold shift, suppression of air shower formation, superluminal photon decay, and superluminal photon splitting. Perspectives for future results on LIV with the next generation of experiments are also addressed.

On the origin of the optical and near-infrared extragalactic background light

In optical and near-infrared background light, excess brightness and fluctuation over the known backgrounds have been reported. To delineate their origin, a fluctuation analysis of the deepest optical images was performed, leading to the detection of a flat fluctuation down to 0.2 arcsec, which is much larger than that expected for galaxies. The sky brightness obtained from the detected fluctuation is a few-times brighter than the integrated light of the galaxies. These findings require some new objects. As a candidate, faint compact objects (FCOs) whose surface number density rapidly increases to the faint end were proposed. FCOs are very compact and show peculiar spectra with infrared excess. If FCOs cause the excess brightness and fluctuation, the surface number density reaches 2.6 × 10³ arcsec^-2. γ-ray observations require the redshift of FCOs to be less than 0.1 with FCOs consisting of missing baryons. A very low M/L indicates that FCOs are powered by gravitational energy associated with black holes.

Hunting Axion Dark Matter with Protoplanetary Disk Polarimetry

We find that the polarimetric observations of protoplanetary disks are useful to search for ultralight axion dark matter. Axion dark matter predicts the rotation of the linear polarization plane of propagating light, and protoplanetary disks are ideal targets to observe it. We show that a recent observation puts the tightest constraint on the axion-photon coupling constant for an axion mass m≲10^{-21}  eV.

Monitoring the Extragalactic High Energy Sky

Blazars are jetted active galactic nuclei with a jet pointing close to the line of sight, hence enhancing their intrinsic luminosity and variability. Monitoring these sources is essential in order to catch them flaring and promptly organize follow-up multi-wavelength observations, which are key to providing rich data sets used to derive e.g., the emission mechanisms at work, and the size and location of the flaring zone. In this context, the Fermi-LAT has proven to be an invaluable instrument, whose data are used to trigger many follow-up observations at high and very high energies. A few examples are illustrated here, as well as a description of different data products and pipelines, with a focus given on FLaapLUC, a tool in use within the H.E.S.S. collaboration.

A gamma-ray determination of the Universe's star formation history

The light emitted by all galaxies over the history of the Universe produces the extragalactic background light (EBL) at ultraviolet, optical, and infrared wavelengths. The EBL is a source of opacity for gamma rays via photon-photon interactions, leaving an imprint in the spectra of distant gamma-ray sources. We measured this attenuation using 739 active galaxies and one gamma-ray burst detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This allowed us to reconstruct the evolution of the EBL and determine the star formation history of the Universe over 90% of cosmic time. Our star formation history is consistent with independent measurements from galaxy surveys, peaking at redshift z ~ 2. Upper limits of the EBL at the epoch of reionization suggest a turnover in the abundance of faint galaxies at z ~ 6.

The Spectrum of the Universe

Cosmic background (CB) radiation, encompassing the sum of emission from all sources outside our own Milky Way galaxy across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, is a fundamental phenomenon in observational cosmology. Many experiments have been conceived to measure it (or its constituents) since the extragalactic Universe was first discovered; in addition to estimating the bulk (cosmic monopole) spectrum, directional variations have also been detected over a wide range of wavelengths. Here we gather the most recent of these measurements and discuss the current status of our understanding of the CB from radio to γ-ray energies. Using available data in the literature, we piece together the sky-averaged intensity spectrum and discuss the emission processes responsible for what is observed. We examine the effect of perturbations to the continuum spectrum from atomic and molecular line processes and comment on the detectability of these signals. We also discuss how one could, in principle, obtain a complete census of the CB by measuring the full spectrum of each spherical harmonic expansion coefficient. This set of spectra of multipole moments effectively encodes the entire statistical history of nuclear, atomic, and molecular processes in the Universe.

Intergalactic electromagnetic cascades in the magnetized Universe as a tool of astroparticle physics

We review the physics of intergalactic electromagnetic cascades in the presence of the extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF). Various regimes of intergalactic electromagnetic cascades are considered depending on the number of cascade generations, the value of the cascade electron deflection angle, and the relations between the EGMF coherence length, typical cascade γ-ray mean free path, and electron energy loss length. We also review contemporary constraints on the EGMF parameters and explore the sensitivity of various γ-ray instruments to the EGMF parameters.

Fermi Large Area Telescope as a Galactic Supernovae Axionscope

In a Galactic core-collapse supernova (SN), axionlike particles (ALPs) could be emitted via the Primakoff process and eventually convert into γ rays in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. From a data-driven sensitivity estimate, we find that, for a SN exploding in our Galaxy, the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) would be able to explore the photon-ALP coupling down to g_{aγ}≃2×10^{-13}  GeV^{-1} for an ALP mass m_{a}≲10^{-9}  eV. These values are out of reach of next generation laboratory experiments. In this event, the Fermi LAT would probe large regions of the ALP parameter space invoked to explain the anomalous transparency of the Universe to γ rays, stellar cooling anomalies, and cold dark matter. If no γ-ray emission were to be detected, Fermi-LAT observations would improve current bounds derived from SN 1987A by more than 1 order of magnitude.

Search for Spectral Irregularities due to Photon-Axionlike-Particle Oscillations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope

We report on the search for spectral irregularities induced by oscillations between photons and axionlike-particles (ALPs) in the γ-ray spectrum of NGC 1275, the central galaxy of the Perseus cluster. Using 6 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data, we find no evidence for ALPs and exclude couplings above 5×10^{-12}  GeV^{-1} for ALP masses 0.5≲m_{a}≲5  neV at 95% confidence. The limits are competitive with the sensitivity of planned laboratory experiments, and, together with other bounds, strongly constrain the possibility that ALPs can reduce the γ-ray opacity of the Universe.
