Long-range Coulomb interactions in quasi-one-dimensional conductors

Anisotropic 2D metallicity: plasmons in Ge(1 0 0)-Au

The low-energy plasmonic excitations of the Ge(0 0 1)-Au close to one monolayer coverage of Au were investigated by momentum-resolved high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. A very weak plasmonic loss was identified dispersing along the chain direction of the [Formula: see text] formed at these Au coverages. The measured dispersion was compared with the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid (TLL) model and with a model for an anisotropic Fermi liquid. Using the TLL model both for single and arrays of wires, no consistent picture turned up that could describe all available data. On the contrary, a quasi-one-dimensional model of a confined 2D electron gas gave a satisfactorily consistent description of the data. From these results for the collective low-energy excitations we conclude that the Ge(0 0 1)-Au system is reasonably well described by a strongly anisotropic 2D Fermi liquid, but is incompatible with a TLL.

Dipolar bosons in a planar array of one-dimensional tubes

We investigate bosonic atoms or molecules interacting via dipolar interactions in a planar array of one-dimensional tubes. We consider the situation in which the dipoles are oriented perpendicular to the tubes by an external field. We find various quantum phases reaching from a "sliding Luttinger liquid" phase to a two-dimensional charge density wave ordered phase. Two different kinds of charge density wave order occur: a stripe phase in which the bosons in different tubes are aligned and a checkerboard phase. We further point out how to distinguish the occurring phases experimentally.

Long-range order in quasi-one-dimensional conductors

We study the formation of the charge-density wave long-range order in a system of repulsive 1D electrons coupled to 3D phonons. We show that the charge-density wave can be stabilized by interaction with phonons in quasi-1D crystals and semiconducting nanowires. In the case of metallic atomic chains, interaction with phonons of a 3D substrate is not enough, and violation of the translational invariance by commensurable perturbation or disorder is needed. The possibility of stabilization of superconductivity in 1D electrons with attraction by means of tunnel coupling to a 3D metal is considered.

Spinons in a crossed-chains model of a 2D spin liquid

Using the random phase approximation, we show that a crossed-chains model of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with frustrated interchain couplings has a nondimerized spin-liquid ground state in 2D, with deconfined spinons as the elementary excitations. The results are confirmed by a bosonization study, which shows that the system is an example of a "sliding Luttinger liquid." In an external field, the system develops an incommensurate field-induced long-range order with a finite transition temperature.

Two-dimensional anisotropic non-Fermi-liquid phase of coupled Luttinger liquids

Using bosonization techniques, we show that strong forward scattering interactions between one-dimensional spinless Luttinger liquids (LL) can stabilize a phase where charge-density wave, superconducting, and transverse single particle hopping perturbations are irrelevant. This new phase retains its LL-like properties in the directions of the chains, but with relations between exponents modified by the transverse interactions, whereas it is a perfect insulator in the transverse direction. The mechanism that stabilizes this phase is strong transverse charge-density wave fluctuations at incommensurate wave vector, which frustrates crystal formation by preventing lock-in of the in-chain density waves.

Quantum theory of the smectic metal state in stripe phases

We present a theory of the electron smectic fixed point of the stripe phases of doped layered Mott insulators. We show that in the presence of a spin gap three phases generally arise: (a) a smectic superconductor, (b) an insulating stripe crystal, and (c) a smectic metal. The latter phase is a stable two-dimensional anisotropic non-Fermi liquid. In the absence of a spin gap there is also a more conventional Fermi-liquid-like phase. The smectic superconductor and smectic metal phases (or glassy versions thereof) may have already been seen in Nd-doped La2-xSrxCuO4.
