Abstract
The temperature dependence of the density correlation function at next-neighbour distances has been investigated for the liquid metal lead. This correlation function is a sensitive parameter for changes in the local environment and its Fourier transform was measured in a coherent inelastic neutron scattering experiment. The zero-frequency amplitude related to the long time decay of density fluctuations decreases in a nonlinear way and indicates a change in dynamics above the melting point. The derived generalized longitudinal viscosity shows a decrease near this temperature range. From these observations we suppose that solidification sets in on a microscopic level distinct above the melting point.

Abstract
We reanalyze literature data on neutron scattering by liquid metals and show that there is an additional broad (in energy) quasielastic mode present that is absent in x-ray scattering. This mode cannot be accounted for by the standard coherent and incoherent scattering mechanisms. We argue that this mode indicates that nonmagnetic liquid metals possess a magnetic moment which fluctuates on a picosecond time scale. This time scale is the same as the time scale of the cage-diffusion process in which an ion rattles around in the cage formed by its neighbors. We find that these fluctuating magnetic moments are present in liquid Hg, Al, Ga, and Pb and possibly also in the alkali metals.

Abstract
The microscopic dynamics in liquid gallium at melting has been studied by inelastic x-ray scattering. We demonstrate the existence of acousticlike modes up to wave vectors above one-half of the first maximum of the static structure factor, at variance with earlier results from inelastic neutron scattering [F. J. Bermejo et al., Phys. Rev. E 49, 3133 (1994)]. Despite structural (extremely rich polymorphism) and electronic (mixed valence) peculiarities, the collective dynamics is strikingly similar to the one of van der Waals and metallic fluids. This result speaks in favor of the universality of the short time dynamics in monatomic liquids rather than of system-specific dynamics.

Abstract
The ion dynamics of liquid mercury was investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. By exploiting an optimized high-resolution ( approximately 1 meV) experimental configuration, the dynamic response function was accurately measured. Collective excitations extending up to 0.6 A(-1) were observed with an associated velocity of 2100+/-80 m/s. This value is notably greater than the sound velocity, but it is provided by a simple Bohm-Staver calculation. The latter finding emphasizes those electron-related features in the ion dynamics, which are common to systems as different as polyvalent and alkali metals.

Abstract
Well-defined microscopic collective excitations are found in liquid Ni at 1763 K by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Such excitations are supported by the liquid despite an anharmonic character of its thermodynamic functions. Consideration of the detailed shape of the interionic pair potential provides a way to understand why atomic motions at microscopic scales behave in a way much closer to the alkali metals than to the liquefied rare gases.
