Boron NMR as a Method to Screen Natural Product Libraries for B-Containing Compounds

Natural products are biologically relevant metabolites exploited for biomedicine and biotechnology. The frequent reisolation of known natural products questions whether existing discovery models are still capable of identifying novel compounds. As innovative NMR-based screening techniques can help overcome these challenges, we applied a phase cycling composite pulse sequence to 11B NMR experiments to enhance their sensitivity to screen libraries for novel boron-containing molecules. Aplasmomycin and autoinducer-2 were detected in crude and enhanced microbial fractions, via their boron signals, as proof of concept. Subsequently, a screen of 21 crude plant and 50 crude marine microbial extracts were chosen at random and analyzed with the optimized 11B experiment for feasibility as a high throughput discovery method. Eight of the plant samples and 13 of the microbial samples were identified as boron-containing, suggesting that there is a higher presence of boron metabolites available from natural sources than previously known due to a lack of appropriate discovery methods. As a result, we believe that this optimized 11B NMR experiment can serve as a robust method for quick and facile discovery of novel boron-containing metabolites from a variety of natural sources.

Development of geopolymer waste form for immobilization of radioactive borate waste

Radioactive borate waste containing a high concentration of boron (B) is problematic to be solidified using cement because soluble borate such as boric acid hinders the hydration reaction. In this study, borate waste was used as a raw material for metakaolin-based geopolymer according to the characteristic that B replaces a part of Si. Geopolymers using KOH alkaline activator (K-geopolymers) showed higher compressive strength than geopolymers using NaOH alkaline activator (Na-geopolymer). In addition, the compressive strength increased proportionally to the Si/(Al+B) ratio regardless of the alkaline cation species. These variations in compressive strength might be due to the viscosity of the geopolymer mixture, atomic size of alkaline cations, and the increase in Si content. The characteristic analyses (XRD, FT-IR, and solid state ¹¹B MAS NMR) indicated that B was incorporated into the geopolymer structure. Thus, the K-geopolymer has a dense and homogeneous microstructure. In a semi-dynamic leaching test, less B leached from the geopolymers compared to the cement waste form. Consequently, borate waste can be solidified using metakaolin-based geopolymer, and the use of a KOH alkaline activator is advantageous in terms of mechanical property and structural durability.

Effects of B2O3 on Viscosity, Structure, and Crystallization of Mold Fluxes for Casting Rare Earth Alloyed Steels

Amounts of rare earth oxides were transferred into mold fluxes for the continuous casting of rare earth alloyed heavy railway steels. B2O3 was added to improve the viscosity properties and the crystallization behavior of this traditional mold flux. Thus, in this paper, effects of B2O3 on viscosity, structure, and crystallization of CeO2-bearing mold fluxes for casting rare earth alloyed heavy railway steels were investigated by rotating cylinder method, Raman spectroscopy, and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). Experimental results revealed that with the addition of B2O3, viscosity values of mold fluxes at some certain temperatures decreased significantly. By analyzing the structure of glassy mold fluxes, it can be observed that B2O3 behaved as a network-forming oxide within the studied system. However, the introduction of the weak bond energy of B–O and the transition from four-fold coordination boron to three-fold coordination boron with loose structural units mainly reduced the viscosity. Moreover, results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed that B2O3 decreased the crystallization of the crystal phase Na4Ca4(Si6O18) and the solidus temperature of mold fluxes. Thus, these results obtained can provide guidelines for designing new mold fluxes for casting rare earth alloyed steels.
