Low-dimensional surface oxides in the oxidation of Rh particles

How the anisotropy of surface oxide formation influences the transient activity of a surface reaction

Scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) allow local surface analysis and visualising ongoing reactions on a µm-scale. These two spatio-temporal imaging methods are applied to polycrystalline Rh, representing a library of well-defined high-Miller-index surface structures. The combination of these techniques enables revealing the anisotropy of surface oxidation, as well as its effect on catalytic hydrogen oxidation. In the present work we observe, using locally-resolved SPEM, structure-sensitive surface oxide formation, which is summarised in an oxidation map and quantitatively explained by the novel step density (SDP) and step edge (SEP) parameters. In situ PEEM imaging of ongoing H₂ oxidation allows a direct comparison of the local reactivity of metallic and oxidised Rh surfaces for the very same different stepped surface structures, demonstrating the effect of Rh surface oxides. Employing the velocity of propagating reaction fronts as indicator of surface reactivity, we observe a high transient activity of Rh surface oxide in H₂ oxidation. The corresponding velocity map reveals the structure-dependence of such activity, representing a direct imaging of a structure-activity relation for plenty of well-defined surface structures within one sample.

Surface oxide formation under reaction conditions may change the catalytic activity of a catalyst. Here, the authors explore the effect of atomic structure of Rh surfaces on the surface oxide formation and its influence on catalytic activity in hydrogen oxidation, revealing a high transient activity.

Directional Gateway to Metal Oxidation: 3D Chemical Mapping Unfolds Oxygen Diffusional Pathways in Rhodium Nanoparticles

The interaction of oxygen with a reactive metal is ubiquitous, yet the precise atomic-level mechanisms and pathways leading to the formation of a surface oxide are not well-understood. We report oxygen atom distributions inside Rh single nanoparticles using atom probe microscopy (APM) and demonstrate that mainly facets of the ⟨022̅⟩ crystallographic directions act as oxygen-permeable gateways. The highly anisotropic spatial distribution of incorporated oxygen atoms is in agreement with video-field emission analyses according to which {113} facets of the ⟨022̅⟩ zones act as portals for subsurface diffusion. In addition to providing a more fundamental understanding of the precursor states to metal corrosion, in particular for the case of nanosized metal particles, our studies are also relevant for heterogeneous catalysis where catalytic activity and selectivity conform to reaction-induced structural changes of metal nanoparticles.

Theoretical Heterogeneous Catalysis: Scaling Relationships and Computational Catalyst Design

Scaling relationships are theoretical constructs that relate the binding energies of a wide variety of catalytic intermediates across a range of catalyst surfaces. Such relationships are ultimately derived from bond order conservation principles that were first introduced several decades ago. Through the growing power of computational surface science and catalysis, these concepts and their applications have recently begun to have a major impact in studies of catalytic reactivity and heterogeneous catalyst design. In this review, the detailed theory behind scaling relationships is discussed, and the existence of these relationships for catalytic materials ranging from pure metal to oxide surfaces, for numerous classes of molecules, and for a variety of catalytic surface structures is described. The use of the relationships to understand and elucidate reactivity trends across wide classes of catalytic surfaces and, in some cases, to predict optimal catalysts for certain chemical reactions, is explored. Finally, the observation that, in spite of the tremendous power of scaling relationships, their very existence places limits on the maximum rates that may be obtained for the catalyst classes in question is discussed, and promising strategies are explored to overcome these limitations to usher in a new era of theory-driven catalyst design.

The role of fluctuations in bistability and oscillations during the H2 + O2 reaction on nanosized rhodium crystals

A combined experimental and theoretical study is presented of fluctuations observed by field ion microscopy in the catalytic reaction of water production on a rhodium tip. A stochastic approach is developed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the different phenomena observed in the experiment, including burst noise manifesting itself in a bistability regime, noisy oscillations, and nanopatterns with a cross-like oxidized zone separating the surface into four quadrants centered on the {111} facets. The study is based on a stochastic model numerically simulating the processes of adsorption, desorption, reaction, and transport. The surface diffusion of hydrogen is described as a percolation process dominated by large clusters corresponding to the four quadrants. The model reproduces the observed phenomena in the ranges of temperature, pressures, and electric field of the experiment.

Strain and structure driven complex magnetic ordering of a CoO overlayer on Ir(100)

We investigate the magnetic ordering in the ultrathin c(10×2) CoO(111) film supported on Ir(100) on the basis of ab initio calculations. We find a close relationship between the local structural properties of the oxide film and the induced magnetic order, leading to alternating ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically ordered segments. While the local magnetic order is directly related to the geometric position of the Co atoms, the mismatch between the CoO film and the Ir substrate leads to a complex long-range order of the oxide.
