Magnetic behavior of Ba3Cu3Sc4O12

Quantum Phase Diagram of a Frustrated Spin-1/2 Ferro-Antiferromagnetic Normal Ladder

In this work, we consider a frustrated two-leg spin-1/2 ladder composed of Heisenberg ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains, and nearest spins from different legs interact via Heisenberg type rung exchange interactions that can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic in nature. The competing exchange interactions in the system lead to five different quantum phases like ferromagnetic, non-collinear ferrimagnetic (NCF), m - 1 / 4 ${m - 1/4}$ , antiferromagnetic and dimer phases. The  quantum phase diagram is constructed for the Heisenberg spin-1/2 model and the phases are characterized using the correlation functions which are calculated by the density matrix renormalization group method. We also analyze the  stability of m - 1 / 4 ${m - 1/4}$ phase and calculate the pitch angle θ ${\left( \theta \right)}$ in the NCF phase.

Electronic and magnetic properties of low-dimensional system Co2TeO3Cl2

The electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal oxyhalide compound Co₂TeO₃Cl₂ are investigated using first principle calculations within the framework of density functional theory. To find the underlying spin-lattice of this compound, various hopping integrals and exchange interactions are calculated. The calculations reveal that the dominant inter-chain and intra-chain interactions are in the ab plane. The exchange path is visualized by Wannier function plotting. The nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor exchange interactions are antiferromagnetic, making the system frustrated in low dimension. Calculations are also done with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) to find out the effect of SOC on this compound. Calculation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy suggests that the easy axis is along the crystallographic b direction.

Kagome-like chains with anisotropic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions

We consider a spin-[Formula: see text] kagome-like chain with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic anisotropic exchange interactions. The ground state phase diagram of this model consists of the ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases. We study the ground state and the low-temperature properties on the phase boundary between these phases. The ground state on this phase boundary is macroscopically degenerate and consists of localized magnon states. We calculate the ground state degeneracy and corresponding residual entropy. The spontaneous magnetization has a jump on the phase boundary confirming the first-order type of the phase transition. In the limit of a strong anisotropy, the spectrum of the low-energy excitations has multi-scale structure governing the peculiar features of the specific heat behavior.

First principles study of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of spin chain compounds: Ca3ZnMnO6 and Ca3ZnCoO6

We have studied the electronic structure and magnetism of the spin chain compounds Ca3ZnMnO6 and Ca3ZnCoO6 using density functional theory with generalised gradient approximation (GGA). In agreement with experiment our calculations reveal that high spin (HS) state for Mn(4+) ion and low spin (LS) state for Co(4+) ion stabilize the magnetic structure of the respective compounds. The magnetic exchange paths, calculated using Nth order muffin-tin orbital downfolding method, shows dominant intra-chain exchange interaction between the magnetic ions (Mn, Co) is antiferromagnetic for Ca3ZnMnO6 and ferromagnetic for Ca3ZnCoO6. The magnetic order of both the compounds is in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules and is consistent with the experimental results. Finally we have investigated the importance of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in these compounds. While SOC practically has no effect for the Mn system, it is strong enough to favor the spin quantization along the chain direction for the Co system in the LS state.

Observation of S = 1/2 quasi-1D magnetic and magneto-dielectric behavior in a cubic SrCuTe2O6

We investigate the magnetic, thermal, and dielectric properties of SrCuTe2O6, which is isostructural to PbCuTe2O6, a recently found, Cu-based 3D frustrated magnet with a corner-sharing triangular spin network having dominant first and second nearest neighbor (nn) couplings (Koteswararao et al 2014 Phys. Rev. B 90 035141). Although SrCuTe2O6 has a structurally similar spin network, the magnetic data exhibit the characteristic features of a typical quasi-1D magnet, which mainly resulted from the magnetically dominant third nn coupling, uniform chains. The magnetic properties of this system are studied via magnetization (M), heat capacity (C p ), dielectric constant ([Formula: see text]), and measurements along with ab initio band structure calculations. The magnetic susceptibility [Formula: see text] data show a broad maximum at 32 K and the system orders at low temperatures [Formula: see text] K and [Formula: see text] K, respectively. The analysis of the [Formula: see text] data gives an intra-chain coupling, [Formula: see text], to be about  ≈  -  42 K with non-negligible frustrated inter-chain couplings ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]). The hopping parameters obtained from the LDA band structure calculations also suggest the presence of coupled uniform chains. The observation of simultaneous anomalies in [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] suggests the presence of a magneto-dielectric effect in SrCuTe2O6. A magnetic phase diagram is also built based on the M, C p , and [Formula: see text] results.

Spin-flop and antiferromagnetic phases of the ferromagnetic half-twist ladder compounds Ba3Cu3In4O12 and Ba3Cu3Sc4O12

The title compounds have dominant ferromagnetic exchange interactions within one-dimensional (1D) half-twist ladders of s = 1/2 Cu(2+) ions and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between ladders, leading to ordered 3D phases at temperatures below 20 K. Here we show that a microscopic 1D model of the paramagnetic (PM) phase combined with a phenomenological model based on sublattice magnetization describes the observed temperature and field dependent magnetism. The model identifies AFM, spin-flop and PM phases whose boundaries have sharp features in the experimental magnetization M(T,H) and specific heat C(P)(T,H). Exact diagonalization of the 1D model, possible for 24 spins due to special structural features of half-twist ladders, yields the magnetization and spin susceptibility of the PM phase. AFM interactions between ladders are included at the mean-field level using the field, H(AF), obtained from modelling the ordered phases. Isotropic exchange J1 =- 135 K and g-tensor g = 2.1 within ladders, plus exchange and anisotropy fields H(AF) and H(A), describe the ordered phases and are almost quantitative for the PM phase.
