Magnetic entropy change plateau in a geometrically frustrated layered system: FeCrAs-like iron-pnictide structure as a magnetocaloric prototype

Caloric Effect Due to the Aharonov-Bohm Flux in an Antidot

In this work, we report the caloric effect for an electronic system of the antidot type, modeled by combining a repulsive and attractive potential (parabolic confinement). In this system, we consider the action of a perpendicular external magnetic field and the possibility of having an Aharonov-Bohm flux (AB-flux) generated by a current passing through a solenoid placed inside the forbidden zone for the electron. The energy levels are obtained analytically, and the model is known as the Bogachek and Landman model. We propose to control the caloric response of the system by varying only the AB-flux, finding that, in the absence of an external magnetic field, the maximization of the effect always occurs at the same AB-flux intensity, independently of the temperature, while fixing the external magnetic field at a non-zero value breaks this symmetry and changes the point where the caloric phenomenon is maximized and is different depending on the temperature to which the process is carried. Our calculations indicate that using an effective electron mass of GaAs heterostructures and a trap intensity of the order of 2.896 meV, the modification of the AB-flux achieves a variation in temperature of the order of 1 K. Our analysis suggests that increasing the parabolic confinement twofold increases the effect threefold, while increasing the antidot size generates the reverse effect, i.e., a strong decrease in the caloric phenomenon under study. Due to the great diversity in technological applications that have antidots in electronics, the possibility of controlling their thermal response simply by varying the intensity of the internal current inside the solenoid (i.e., the intensity of AB-flux) can be a platform of interest for experimental studies.

Residual entropy and magnetocaloric effect in a diluted sawtooth spin model of hole-doped CuO chains

Ground-state and magnetocaloric properties of a site-diluted sawtooth magnetic chain in the presence of an external magnetic field are exactly investigated by using the transfer-matrix method. The model captures the main magnetic interactions along CuO chains present in some hole-doped cuprates. The ground-state diagram is exhibited and analytical expressions for the residual entropy within each ground state and along the transition lines are derived. We explicitly discuss the role of the underlying pairing correlations and the entropy maximization principle. The isothermal entropy change is determined as a function of interaction parameters, doping concentration, and magnetic-field amplitude. Normal and inverse magnetocaloric effects are reported. Adiabatic demagnetization curves are discussed in connection with configurational and spin contributions to the residual entropy.

Magnetocaloric Effect in an Antidot: The Effect of the Aharonov-Bohm Flux and Antidot Radius

In this work, we report the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) for an electron interacting with an antidot, under the effect of an Aharonov-Bohm flux (AB-flux) subjected to a parabolic confinement potential. We use the Bogachek and Landman model, which additionally allows the study of quantum dots with Fock-Darwin energy levels for vanishing antidot radius and AB-flux. We find that AB-flux strongly controls the oscillatory behaviour of the MCE, thus acting as a control parameter for the cooling or heating of the magnetocaloric effect. We propose a way to detect AB-flux by measuring temperature differences.

Magnetocaloric Effect in Non-Interactive Electron Systems: "The Landau Problem" and Its Extension to Quantum Dots

In this work, we report the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in two systems of non-interactive particles: the first corresponds to the Landau problem case and the second the case of an electron in a quantum dot subjected to a parabolic confinement potential. In the first scenario, we realize that the effect is totally different from what happens when the degeneracy of a single electron confined in a magnetic field is not taken into account. In particular, when the degeneracy of the system is negligible, the magnetocaloric effect cools the system, while in the other case, when the degeneracy is strong, the system heats up. For the second case, we study the competition between the characteristic frequency of the potential trap and the cyclotron frequency to find the optimal region that maximizes the ΔT of the magnetocaloric effect, and due to the strong degeneracy of this problem, the results are in coherence with those obtained for the Landau problem. Finally, we consider the case of a transition from a normal MCE to an inverse one and back to normal as a function of temperature. This is due to the competition between the diamagnetic and paramagnetic response when the electron spin in the formulation is included.

Geometrically frustrated Fe2P-like systems: beyond the Fe-trimer approximation

Fe(2)P-like structures can be strongly frustrated magnets due to their Kagome/triangular intercalated-layer structure. A complete magnetic solution of the complex spin architecture, and hence the full potential of the magnetic phenomena in Fe(2)P-like material prototypes, is yet to be found. A previous magnetic model for a representative FeCrAs-like system used a mean-field effective-spin to describe the 3g-Wyckoff located Fe-triangles. Such an approach demonstrated the outstanding magnetocaloric properties of the material but left the question of whether the intra-trimer interaction could lead to new physical phenomena and therefore more potentially useful properties. In this work Monte Carlo simulations are employed in order to understand both the influence of the additional degrees of freedom introduced by the Fe-trimers and the changes caused by all the possible exchange couplings between them. Complex scenarios arise, in which FM coupling in the trimers gives rise to both in-plane and out-of-plane inter-layer AFM states; whereas AFM exchange in the trimers gives rise to three distinct states, i.e. AFM-canted layers, a non-collinear superposition of ferromagnetic Kagome/triangular orderings, and tilted inter-planar AFM order. These last three configurations generate a double bifurcated magnetic phase diagram while the first one mimics the behavior seen in a model that treats the trimer as an effective-spin under an applied magnetic field.

Normal and inverse magnetocaloric effect in magnetic multilayers with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling

The thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 magnetic multilayer system with antiferromagnetic interplanar couplings is studied using the pair approximation method. Special attention is paid to magnetocaloric properties, quantified by isothermal entropy change. The multilayer consists of two kinds of magnetic planes, one of which is diluted. The intraplanar couplings in both planes have arbitrary anisotropy ranging between Ising and isotropic Heisenberg interactions. The phase diagram related to the occurrence of magnetic compensation phenomenon is constructed and discussed. Then the isothermal entropy change is discussed as a function of interaction parameters, magnetic component concentration and external magnetic field amplitude. The ranges of normal and inverse magnetocaloric effect are found and related to the presence or absence of compensation.

The magnetocaloric effect in Er2Fe17 near the magnetic phase transition

Recent investigations in R2Fe17 intermetallic compounds have evidenced that these materials present a moderate magnetocaloric effect (MCE) near room temperature. A series of accurate magnetization measurements was carried out to show that the value of the demagnetizing factor has a significant influence on the absolute MCE value of Er2Fe17. In addition, the critical exponents determined from heat capacity and magnetization measurements allow us to describe the field dependence of the observed MCE around the Curie temperature.
