Identification of the structure of the 3107 cm(-1) H-related defect in diamond

Photoelectric characteristics of hydrogen-terminated polycrystalline diamond MESFETs

In the field of diamond MESFETs, this work is what we believe to be the first to investigate the optoelectronic properties of hydrogen-terminated polycrystalline diamond MESFETs under visible and near-UV light irradiation. It is shown that the diamond MESFETs are well suited for weak light detection in the near-ultraviolet region around the wavelength of 368 nm, with a responsivity of 6.14 × 106 A/W and an external quantum efficiency of 2.1 × 107 when the incident light power at 368.7 nm is only 0.75 µW/cm2. For incident light at 275.1 nm, the device's sensitivity and EQE increase as the incident light power increases; at an incident light power of 175.32 µW/cm2 and a VGS of -1 V, the device's sensitivity is 2.9 × 105 A/W and the EQE is 1.3 × 106. For incident light in the wavelength range of 660 nm to 404 nm with an optical power of 70 µW/cm2, the device achieves an average responsivity of 1.21 × 105 A/W. This indicates that hydrogen-terminated polycrystalline diamond MESFETs are suitable for visible and near-UV light detection, especially for weak near-UV light detection. However, the transient response test of the device shows a long relaxation time of about 0.2 s, so it is not yet suitable for high-speed UV communication or detection.

Dephasing Dynamics across Different Local Vibrational Modes and Crystalline Environments

The perturbed free induction decay (PFID) observed in ultrafast infrared spectroscopy was used to unveil the rates at which different vibrational modes of the same atomic-scale defect can interact with their environment. The N_{3}VH^{0} defect in diamond provided a model system, allowing a comparison of stretch and bend vibrational modes within different crystal lattice environments. The observed bend mode (first overtone) exhibited dephasing times T_{2}=2.8(1)  ps, while the fundamental stretch mode had surprisingly faster dynamics T_{2}<1.7  ps driven by its more direct perturbation of the crystal lattice, with increased phonon coupling. Further, at high defect concentrations the stretch mode's dephasing rate was enhanced. The ability to reliably measure T_{2} via PFID provides vital insights into how vibrational systems interact with their local environment.

Color Genesis of Brown Diamond from the Mengyin Kimberlite, China

The Mengyin diamondiferous kimberlite cluster in Shandong province is one of the three major sources of natural diamond in China, where many brown diamonds are mined, but the genesis of their color is still controversial. In this paper, studies including microscopic examination, optical properties of orthogonal polarization, low temperature photoluminescence spectra, infrared spectra, Raman spectra, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, luminescence of cathodoluminescence, and transmission electron microscopy have been carried out on the uncut brown diamonds and their slice samples to constrain on the color genesis of brown diamond from the Mengyin deposit. The results show that the brown color is dominantly caused by plastic deformation, and some samples are also caused by non-deformation-related defects and inclusions.

Effect of Diamond Polishing and Thermal Treatment on Carbon Paramagnetic Centers' Nature and Structure

Diamonds contain carbon paramagnetic centers (stable carbon radicals) in small concentrations (at the level of ~1 × 10¹² spins/mg) that can help in elucidating the structure of the nitrogen atoms’ contaminants in the diamond crystal. All diamonds that undergo polishing are exposed to high temperatures, owing to the friction force during the polishing process, which may affect the carbon-centered radicals’ concentration and structure. The temperature is increased appreciably; consequently, the black body radiation in the visible range turns orange. During polishing, diamonds emit an orange light (at a wavelength of about 600 nm) that is typical of a black body temperature of 900 °C or higher. Other processes in which color-enhanced diamonds are exposed to high temperatures are thermal treatments or the high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) process in which the brown color (resulting from plastic deformation) is bleached. The aim of the study was to examine how thermal treatment and polishing influence the paramagnetic centers in the diamond. For this purpose, four rough diamonds were studied: two underwent a polishing process, and the other two were thermally treated at 650 °C and 1000 °C. The diamonds were analyzed pre- and post-treatment by EPR (Electron Paramagnetic resonance), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared, fluorescence, and their visual appearance. The results indicate that the polishing process results in much more than just thermal heating the paramagnetic centers.

Diamonds from the Mir Pipe (Yakutia): Spectroscopic Features and Annealing Studies

For this study, 21 samples of colorless octahedral diamonds (weighing 5.4–55.0 mg) from the Mir pipe (Yakutia) were investigated with photoluminescence (PL), infrared (IR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Based on the IR data, three groups of diamonds belonging to types IIa, IaAB, and IaB were selected and their spectroscopic features were analyzed in detail. The three categories of stones exhibited different characteristic PL systems. The type IaB diamonds demonstrated dominating nitrogen–nickel complexes S2, S3, and 523 nm, while they were less intensive or even absent in the type IaAB crystals. The type IIa diamonds showed a double peak at 417.4 + 418.7 nm (the 418 center in this study), which is assumed to be a nickel–boron defect. In the crystals analyzed, no matter which type, 490.7, 563.5, 613, and 676.3 nm systems of various intensity could be detected; moreover, N3, H3, and H4 centers were very common. The step-by-step annealing experiments were performed in the temperature range of 600–1700 °C. The treatment at 600 °C resulted in the 563.5 nm system’s disappearance; the interstitial carbon vacancy annihilation could be considered as a reason. The 676.5 nm and 613 nm defects annealed out at 1500 °C and 1700 °C, respectively. Furthermore, as a result of annealing at 1500 °C, the 558.5 and 576 nm centers characteristic of superdeep diamonds from São Luis (Brazil) appeared. These transformations could be explained by nitrogen diffusion or interaction with the dislocations and/or vacancies produced.

A Defect Study and Classification of Brown Diamonds with Non-Deformation-Related Color

While the first part of this study took a detailed look at the properties, defects and classification of brown diamonds with deformation-related (DR) brown color and compared them to pink to purple to red diamonds, this second part covers diamonds with non-deformation-related (referred to as NDR in this study) brown color, including diamonds with treatment-induced brown color and synthetic brown diamonds. It was found that the natural NDR brown diamonds include CO2 and Pseudo CO2 diamonds as well as certain hydrogen-rich diamonds. Based on these, the new classification of NDR brown diamonds has been elaborated, resulting in 5 different classes. The detailed defect study performed has shown and confirmed the complexity of the CO2 and Pseudo CO2 diamonds; the probable link between structurally bound oxygen and some of the spectroscopic features such as the 480 nm absorption band is apparent in these diamonds. One of the most interesting findings was made through the low temperature NIR spectroscopy of some usually hydrogen-rich diamonds, which has defined a defect of great interest, the 1330 nm center; we suggest that this defect, together with the many lines in the 970 to 1000 nm range—referred to as the 990 nm series in this study—are responsible for the complex UV-Vis-NIR spectra seen of these diamonds. The results indicate that both features are nickel-nitrogen-related defects, the 1330 nm defect without involvement of hydrogen and the 990 nm series likely with hydrogen involved. Another surprising result was that during various treatment experiments performed we created dark orangish brown color in originally pale yellow “cape” diamonds by HPHT treatment at 2500 °C. It is suggested that the creation of this brown hue is related to the destruction or transformation of the N3 center at such extreme conditions.

An Ultrafast Shakedown Reveals the Energy Landscape, Relaxation Dynamics, and Concentration of the N3VH0 Defect in Diamond

Atomic-scale defects can control the exploitable optoelectronic performance of crystalline materials, and several point defects in diamond are emerging functional components for a range of quantum technologies. Nitrogen and hydrogen are common impurities incorporated into diamond, and there is a family of defects that includes both. The N₃VH⁰ defect is a lattice vacancy where three nearest neighbor carbon atoms are replaced with nitrogen atoms and a hydrogen is bonded to the remaining carbon. It is regularly observed in natural and high-temperature annealed synthetic diamond and gives rise to prominent absorption features in the mid-infrared. Here, we combine time- and spectrally resolved infrared absorption spectroscopy to yield unprecedented insight into the N₃VH⁰ defect's vibrational dynamics following infrared excitation of the C-H stretch. In doing so, we gain fundamental information about the energies of quantized vibrational states and corroborate our results with theory. We map out, for the first time, energy relaxation pathways, which include multiphonon relaxation processes and anharmonic coupling to the C-H bend mode. These advances provide new routes to quantify and probe atomic-scale defects.

Effect of HPHT Treatment on Spectroscopic Features of Natural Type Ib-IaA Diamonds Containing Y Centers

In this paper, we report a spectroscopic study of natural type Ib-IaA diamonds containing Y centers subjected to high-pressure high-temperature treatment at 7–7.5 GPa and 1700–2200 °C. Diamond samples showing the Y centers as the dominant absorption feature in the infrared spectra were selected from a collection of natural diamonds from alluvial placers of the northeastern Siberian Platform. The samples were investigated by spectroscopic techniques before and after each annealing stage. It was found that upon annealing at temperatures higher than 2000°C, the defect-induced one-phonon spectra changed from the Y centers to a new form with a characteristic band peaking at 1060 cm−1. Photoluminescence spectra of the samples were modified after each annealing stage starting from 1700 °C. The most significant changes in photoluminescence occurred at temperatures higher than 2000 °C and were associated with a sharp increase of the intensity of an emission band peaking at about 690 nm. A comparison with natural red-luminescing diamonds from Yakutian kimberlite pipes was performed. It was concluded that the observed 1060 cm−1 IR band and the 690 nm red emission band are genetically related to the Y centers and that defects or impurities responsible for the Y centers appear quite widespread in natural diamonds from various deposits worldwide.

Mixed-Habit Type Ib-IaA Diamond from an Udachnaya Eclogite

The variety of morphology and properties of natural diamonds reflects variations in the conditions of their formation in different mantle environments. This study presents new data on the distribution of impurity centers in diamond type Ib-IaA from xenolith of bimineral eclogite from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe. The high content of non-aggregated nitrogen C defects in the studied diamonds indicates their formation shortly before the stage of transportation to the surface by the kimberlite melt. The observed sectorial heterogeneity of the distribution of C- and A-defects indicates that aggregation of nitrogen in the octahedral sectors occurs faster than in the cuboid sectors.
