Thermal stability of MnBi magnetic materials

Influence of Bi Content on the Temperature of the Formation of the Hard Magnetic MnBi Phase: Simultaneous Irreversible Drop of Resistance

Pulsed laser-deposited (PLD) MnBi films were fabricated by alternating deposition of Mn and Bi layers. In order to obtain the ferromagnetic MnBi phase, heat treatments were performed on the samples. Simultaneously, the resistance of the samples was monitored as a function of the temperature. Thus, on increasing the temperature, a steep decrease in the resistance of the films was observed, simultaneous to the onset of the formation of the MnBi phase. At room-temperature, these annealed samples showed a ferromagnetic behavior, as well as the presence of the characteristic LT-MnBi phase diffraction peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns. The temperature of the generation of the MnBi phase depended on the relative concentration of Mn and Bi in the different samples: on increasing the Bi atomic concentration, the temperature of the generation of the MnBi phase decreased.

Effects of Mg and Sb Substitution on the Magnetic Properties of Magnetic Field Annealed MnBi Alloys

Rare-earth-free permanent magnets have attracted considerable attention due to their favorable properties and applicability for cost-effective, high-efficiency, and sustainable energy devices. However, the magnetic field annealing process, which enhances the performance of permanent magnets, needs to be optimized for different magnetic fields and phases. Therefore, we investigated the effect of composition on the crystallization of amorphous MnBi to the ferromagnetic low-temperature phase (LTP). The optimal compositions and conditions were applied to magnetic field annealing under 2.5 T for elemental Mg- and Sb/Mg pair-substituted MnBi. The optimum MnBi composition for the highest purity LTP was determined to be Mn₅₆Bi₄₄, and its maximum energy product, (BH)_max, was 5.62 MGOe. The Mg-substituted MnBi exhibited enhanced squareness (M_r/M_s), coercivity (H_c), and (BH)_max values up to 0.8, 9659 Oe, and 5.64 MGOe, respectively, whereas the same values for the Sb/Mg pair-substituted MnBi were 0.76, 7038 Oe, and 5.60 MGOe, respectively. The substitution effects were also investigated using first-principles calculations. The density of states and total magnetic moments of Mn₁₆Bi₁₅Mg and Mn₁₆Bi₁₅Sb were similar to those of pure Mn₁₆Bi₁₆. Conversely, the Sb-substituted MnBi resulted in a dramatic enhancement in the anisotropy constant (K) from a small negative value (−0.85 MJ/m³) to a large positive value (6.042 MJ/m³).

Optimization of magnetic properties in fast consolidated SrFe12O19 nanocrystallites

The magnetic properties of SrFe₁₂O₁₉ nanocrystallites produced by hydrothermal synthesis and consolidated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) were optimized by varying the compaction parameters: sintering time, sintering temperature, uniaxial pressure or pre-compaction in a magnetic field. Highly textured compacts with a high degree of crystallite alignment were produced. Qualitative and quantitative textural information was obtained based on X-ray diffraction pole figure measurements. The optimum sintering conditions, relating the degree of alignment and bulk magnetic properties, were identified based on the resulting magnetic properties. It was found that one must strike a balance between the degree of crystallite alignment for high saturation magnetisation and coercivity (H _c) to gain the highest energy product (BH_max). It was found that the coercive field drops when the crystallite alignment increases. This was particularly pronounced in the case of magnetically pre-aligned powders prior to SPS, where H _c and BH_max decreased as the pellets became increasingly textured. The best BH_max value of 29(4) kJ m^-3 was found for the sample sintered at 950 °C for 2 minutes with an applied pressure of 100 MPa for a powder pre-aligned in an applied field of 0.55 T. The results presented here show the potential of SPS consolidation of SrFe₁₂O₁₉ with high relative densities and emphasize the effect of the degree of alignment on the decrease of coercive field and its influence on the magnetic performance.

Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Mn55Bi45 Powders Obtained by Different Ball Milling Processes

Low-temperature phase (LTP) MnBi is considered as a promising rare-earth-free permanent magnetic material with high coercivity and unique positive temperature coefficient of coercivity. Mn55Bi45 ribbons with high purity of LTP MnBi phase were prepared by melt spinning. Then, Mn55Bi45 powders with different particle size were obtained by low-energy ball milling (LEBM) with and without added surfactant. The coercivity is enhanced in both cases. Microstructure characterization reveals that Mn55Bi45 powders obtained by surfactant assisted low-energy ball milling (SALEBM) have better particle size uniformity and show higher decomposition of LTP MnBi. Coercivity can achieve a value of 17.2 kOe and the saturation magnetization (Ms) is 16 emu/g when Mn55Bi45 powders milled about 10 h by SALEBM. Coercivity has achieved a maximum value of 18.2 kOe at room temperature, and 23.5 kOe at 380 K after 14 h of LEBM. Furthermore, Mn55Bi45 powders obtained by LEBM have better magnetic properties.
