Quantitative analysis of mechanical and electrostatic properties of poly(lactic) acid fibers and poly(lactic) acid-carbon nanotube composites using atomic force microscopy

Adsorptive behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes immobilized magnetic nanoparticles for removing selected pesticides from aqueous matrices

The present work synthesized two new materials of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-OH and MWCNT-COOH) impregnated with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) using solution precipitation methodology. The resulting MWCNT-OH-Mag and MWCNT-COOH-Mag materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and electrical force microscopy. The characterization results indicate that the -OH functional groups in the MWCNT interact effectively with magnetite iron favoring impregnation and indicating the regular distribution of nanoparticles on the surface of the synthesized materials. The adsorption efficiency of the MWCNT-OH-Mag and MWCNT-COOH-Mag materials was tested using the pollutants 2,4-D and Atrazine. Over batch studies carried out under different pH ranges, it was found that the optimal condition for 2,4-D adsorption was at pH 2, while for Atrazine, it was found at pH 6. The rapid adsorption kinetics of 2,4-D and Atrazine reaches equilibrium within 30 min. The pseudo-first-order model described 2,4-D adsorption well. The General-order model described better atrazine adsorption. The magnetically doped adsorbent functionalized with -OH surface groups (MWCNT-OH-Mag) demonstrated superior adsorption performance and increased Fe-doped sites. The Sips model described the adsorption isotherms accurately. MWCNT-OH-Mag presented the greatest adsorption capacity at 51.4 and 47.7 mg g^-1 for 2,4-D and Atrazine, respectively. Besides, electrostatic forces and complexation rule the molecular interactions between metals and pesticides. The leaching and regeneration tests of the synthesized materials indicate high stability in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, experiments with wastewater samples contaminated with the model pollutants indicate that the novel adsorbents are highly promising for enhancing water purification by adsorptive separation.

Nanomechanical Characterization of Bacterial Polyhydroxyalkanoates Using Atomic Force Microscopy

Polyhydroxyalkanoates are a promising class of biopolymers that can allow the production of sustainable plastic materials. The mechanical properties of such materials are very important for possible industrial applications, but the amount of polymer required for common mechanical testing can be orders of magnitude more than what is possible to achieve with a lab-scale process. Nanoindentation with the Atomic Force Microscope allows an estimation of the Elastic Modulus that can be used as a preliminary measurement on PHA when only a limited amount of material is available. Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) copolymers were analyzed, with moduli ranging from 528 ± 62 MPa to 1623 ± 172 MPa, according to both the composition and the crystallization kinetics.

Mechanical Considerations for Electrospun Nanofibers in Tendon and Ligament Repair

Electrospun nanofibers possess unique qualities such as nanodiameter, high surface area to volume ratio, biomimetic architecture, and tunable chemical and electrical properties. Numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of nanofibrous architecture to direct cell morphology, migration, and more complex biological processes such as differentiation and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition through topographical guidance cues. These advantages have created great interest in electrospun fibers for biomedical applications, including tendon and ligament repair. Electrospun nanofibers, despite their nanoscale size, generally exhibit poor mechanical properties compared to larger conventionally manufactured polymer fiber materials. This invites the question of what role electrospun polymer nanofibers can play in tendon and ligament repair applications that have both biological and mechanical requirements. At first glance, the strength and stiffness of electrospun nanofiber grafts appear to be too low to fill the rigorous loading conditions of these tissues. However, there are a number of strategies to enhance and tune the mechanical properties of electrospun nanofiber grafts. As researchers design the next-generation electrospun tendon and ligament grafts, it is critical to consider numerous physiologically relevant mechanical criteria and to evaluate graft mechanical performance in conditions and loading environments that reflect in vivo conditions and surgical fixation methods.

Effect of Laminating Pressure on Polymeric Multilayer Nanofibrous Membranes for Liquid Filtration

In the new century, electrospun nanofibrous webs are widely employed in various applications due to their specific surface area and porous structure with narrow pore size. The mechanical properties have a major influence on the applications of nanofiber webs. Lamination technology is an important method for improving the mechanical strength of nanofiber webs. In this study, the influence of laminating pressure on the properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers/laminate was investigated. Heat-press lamination was carried out at three different pressures, and the surface morphologies of the multilayer nanofibrous membranes were observed under an optical microscope. In addition, air permeability, water filtration, and contact angle experiments were performed to examine the effect of laminating pressure on the breathability, water permeability and surface wettability of multilayer nanofibrous membranes. A bursting strength test was developed and applied to measure the maximum bursting pressure of the nanofibers from the laminated surface. A water filtration test was performed using a cross-flow unit. Based on the results of the tests, the optimum laminating pressure was determined for both PAN and PVDF multilayer nanofibrous membranes to prepare suitable microfilters for liquid filtration.

Physicochemical properties of polycaprolactone/collagen/elastin nanofibers fabricated by electrospinning

Collagen and elastin are the two most abundant proteins in the human body, and as biomaterials offer fascinating properties to composite materials. More detailed investigations including these biomaterials within reinforced composites are still needed. This report describes physicochemical properties of fibers composed of collagen type I, collagen III, elastin and polycaprolactone (PCL). Prior to the electrospinning process, PCL was functionalized through covalent attachment of -NH₂ groups by aminolysis reaction with hexamentilendiamine. The fibers were fabricated by electrospinning technique set up with a non-conventional collector. A morphological comparative study was developed at different rations of collagen type I, observing in some cases two populations of fibers. The diameters and morphology were analyzed by SEM, observing a wide array of nanostructures with diameters of ~310 to 693nm. Chemical characterization was assessed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the functionalized PCL was characterized through ninhydrin assay resulting in 0.36mM NH₂/mg fiber. Swelling tests were performed for 24h, obtaining 320% for the majority of the fibers indicating morphological stability and good water uptake. In addition, contact angle analysis demonstrated adequate permeability and differences for each system depending mainly upon the type of biopolymer incorporated and the functionalization of PCL, ranging the values from 108° to 17°. Moreover, differential scanning calorimetry results showed a melting temperature (T_m) of ~60°C. The onset degradation temperatures (T_d,onset) ranged between 115 and 148°C, and were obtained by thermogravimetric analysis. The local mechanical properties of individual fibers were quantified by atomic force acoustic microscopy. These results propose that the physicochemical and mechanical properties of these scaffolds offer the possibility for enhanced biological activity Thus, they have a great potential as candidate scaffolds in tissue engineering applications.
