In situ Raman spectroscopy of the graphene/water interface of a solution-gated field-effect transistor: electron-phonon coupling and spectroelectrochemistry

Building a cm2scale CVD graphene-based gas sensor: modelling the kinetic with a three-site adsorption/desorption Langmuir model

In this article, we aim to develop and study a highly sensitive and selective cm2scale graphene-based gas sensor. We present the technology used to fabricate sensors which integrate monolayer chemical vapour deposition graphene: photolithography and transfer of layers. Characterization techniques (optical microscopy, AFM, micro-Raman spectroscopy, transport electrical measurements) ensure a diagnosis of graphene ribbons and allow good reproducibility of technological processes. We present the results of gas characterizations after a 200 ppm NO2exposure. We propose a novel approach for the modelling of the sensor response with a three-site adsorption/desorption Langmuir model. This innovative way of modelling the sensor response should provide a better understanding of the sensor's kinetic and help to overcome the long response time observed with graphene gas sensors.

Label-free detection of Cu(II) in fish using a graphene field-effect transistor gated by structure-switching aptamer probes

Copper sulfate is a widely used agent to control insects, bacteria and algae for fishery. However, excess amount of copper ions in water accumulate in aquatic products through the ecological cycle system, highly threatening food safety and public health. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a rapid and efficient method for the determination of copper content in aquatic products. In this study, we developed a label-free biosensor for Cu(II) based on a graphene field-effect transistor gated by structure-switching aptamer probes (SSA-GFET) against Cu(II) we obtained before. The detection mechanism of the biosensor is attributed to the surface charge shift and the potential change of the gate electrode upon the specific binding of Cu(II). The SSA-GFET biosensor has a low detection limit of 10 nM and a linear range of 10 nM to 3 μM to Cu(II). In addition to the excellent selectivity to Cu(II), the biosensor also showes the advantage of high recovery rate for detection of Cu(II) in real fish samples. Because of the detection characteristics of label-free SSA-GFET, it has great advantages in the field of food safety and environmental detection.

Growth and in situ characterization of 2D materials by chemical vapour deposition on liquid metal catalysts: a review

2D materials (2DMs) have now been established as unique and attractive alternatives to replace current technological materials in a number of applications. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD), is undoubtedly the most renowned technique for thin film synthesis and meets all requirements for automated large-scale production of 2DMs. Currently most CVD methods employ solid metal catalysts (SMCat) for the growth of 2DMs however their use has been found to induce structural defects such as wrinkles, fissures, and grain boundaries among others. On the other hand, liquid metal catalysts (LMCat), constitute a possible alternative for the production of defect-free 2DMs albeit with a small temperature penalty. This review is a comprehensive report of past attempts to employ LMCat for the production of 2DMs with emphasis on graphene growth. Special attention is paid to the underlying mechanisms that govern crystal growth and/or grain consolidation and film coverage. Finally, the advent of online metrology which is particularly effective for monitoring the chemical processes under LMCat conditions is also reviewed and certain directions for future development are drawn.

Sensing local pH and ion concentration at graphene electrode surfaces using in situ Raman spectroscopy

We report a novel approach to probe the local ion concentration at graphene/water interfaces using in situ Raman spectroscopy. Here, the upshifts observed in the G band Raman mode under applied electrochemical potentials are used to determine the charge density in the graphene sheet. For voltages up to ±0.8 V vs. NHE, we observe substantial upshifts in the G band Raman mode by as much as 19 cm^-1, which corresponds to electron and hole carrier densities of 1.4 × 10¹³ cm^-2 and Fermi energy shifts of ±430 meV. The charge density in the graphene electrode is also measured independently using the capacitance-voltage characteristics (i.e., Q = CV), and is found to be consistent with those measured by Raman spectroscopy. From charge neutrality requirements, the ion concentration in solution per unit area must be equal and opposite to the charge density in the graphene electrode. Based on these charge densities, we estimate the local ion concentration as a function of electrochemical potential in both pure DI water and 1 M KCl solutions, which span a pH range from 3.8 to 10.4 for pure DI water and net ion concentrations of ±0.7 mol L^-1 for KCl under these applied voltages.
