Cross-correlation analysis of mechanomyographic signals detected in two axes

MMG-Based Knee Dynamic Extension Force Estimation Using Cross-Talk and IGWO-LSTM

Mechanomyography (MMG) is an important muscle physiological activity signal that can reflect the amount of motor units recruited as well as the contraction frequency. As a result, MMG can be utilized to estimate the force produced by skeletal muscle. However, cross-talk and time-series correlation severely affect MMG signal recognition in the real world. These restrict the accuracy of dynamic muscle force estimation and their interaction ability in wearable devices. To address these issues, a hypothesis that the accuracy of knee dynamic extension force estimation can be improved by using MMG signals from a single muscle with less cross-talk is first proposed. The hypothesis is then confirmed using the estimation results from different muscle signal feature combinations. Finally, a novel model (improved grey wolf optimizer optimized long short-term memory networks, i.e., IGWO-LSTM) is proposed for further improving the performance of knee dynamic extension force estimation. The experimental results demonstrate that MMG signals from a single muscle with less cross-talk have a superior ability to estimate dynamic knee extension force. In addition, the proposed IGWO-LSTM provides the best performance metrics in comparison to other state-of-the-art models. Our research is expected to not only improve the understanding of the mechanisms of quadriceps contraction but also enhance the flexibility and interaction capabilities of future rehabilitation and assistive devices.

Crosstalk in Mechanomyographic Signals From Elbow Flexor Muscles During Submaximal to Maximal Isometric Flexion, Pronation, and Supination Torque Tasks

This study analyzed the crosstalk in mechanomyographic (MMG) signals from elbow flexors during isometric muscle actions from 20% to 100% maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). Twenty-five young, healthy, male participants performed the isometric elbow flexion, forearm pronation, and supination tasks at an elbow joint angle of 90 deg. The MMG signals from the biceps brachii (BB), brachialis (BRA), and brachioradialis (BRD) muscles were recorded using accelerometers. The cross-correlation coefficient was used to quantify the crosstalk in MMG signals, recorded in a direction transverse to muscle fiber axis, among the muscle pairs (P1: BB and BRA, P2: BRA and BRD, and P3: BB and BRD). In addition, the MMG RMS and MPF were quantified. The mean normalized RMS and mean MPF exhibited increasing (r > 0.900) and decreasing (r < -0.900) trends, respectively, with increases in the effort levels in all three tasks. The magnitude of crosstalk ranged from 0.915% to 21.565% in all three muscle pairs. The crosstalk was found to exhibit high positive correlations with submaximal to maximal flexion [P1 (r = 0.970), P2 (r = 0.951), and P3 (r = 0.824)], pronation [P1 (r = 0.811), P2 (r = 0.763), and P3 (r = 0.901)] and supination [P1 (r = 0.898), P2 (r = 0.838), and P3 (r = 0.852)] torque levels (eight out of nine p-values were < 0.05). Regardless of the high positive correlation between crosstalk and level of effort, the crosstalk remained at a low range (0.915-21.565%) with increases in the torque levels.

STUDY OF GAIT PATTERN RECOGNITION BASED ON FUSION OF MECHANOMYOGRAPHY AND ATTITUDE ANGLE SIGNAL

The study of lower limb movements plays an important role in many fields, such as rehabilitation and treatment of disabled patients, detection, and monitoring of daily life, as well as the interaction between people and machine, like the application of intelligent prosthetics. In this paper, the wireless device was used to collect the mechanomyography (MMG) signals of four thigh muscles (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and semitendinosus) and the attitude angle of rectus femoris. High precision was achieved in 11 gait movements, including 3 static activities, 4 dynamic transition activities, and 4 dynamic activities. It has been verified that the hidden Markov model (HMM) could not only be applied to the MMG-based gait recognition with high veracity but also support comparative analysis between support vector machine (SVM) and quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). In addition, the experiment was conducted from the perspectives of feature selections, channel combinations, and muscle contribution rates. The results show that the average classification accuracy of dynamic motions based on MMG is 98.27%, while based on attitude angle, the average recognition rate of static motions and dynamic transition motions could achieve 98.33% and 100%, respectively. Generally, the average recognition rate of 11 gait motions is 98.91%.

Mechanomyographic parameter extraction methods: an appraisal for clinical applications

The research conducted in the last three decades has collectively demonstrated that the skeletal muscle performance can be alternatively assessed by mechanomyographic signal (MMG) parameters. Indices of muscle performance, not limited to force, power, work, endurance and the related physiological processes underlying muscle activities during contraction have been evaluated in the light of the signal features. As a non-stationary signal that reflects several distinctive patterns of muscle actions, the illustrations obtained from the literature support the reliability of MMG in the analysis of muscles under voluntary and stimulus evoked contractions. An appraisal of the standard practice including the measurement theories of the methods used to extract parameters of the signal is vital to the application of the signal during experimental and clinical practices, especially in areas where electromyograms are contraindicated or have limited application. As we highlight the underpinning technical guidelines and domains where each method is well-suited, the limitations of the methods are also presented to position the state of the art in MMG parameters extraction, thus providing the theoretical framework for improvement on the current practices to widen the opportunity for new insights and discoveries. Since the signal modality has not been widely deployed due partly to the limited information extractable from the signals when compared with other classical techniques used to assess muscle performance, this survey is particularly relevant to the projected future of MMG applications in the realm of musculoskeletal assessments and in the real time detection of muscle activity.

Mechanomyogram for muscle function assessment: a review

BACKGROUND

Mechanomyography (MMG) has been extensively applied in clinical and experimental practice to examine muscle characteristics including muscle function (MF), prosthesis and/or switch control, signal processing, physiological exercise, and medical rehabilitation. Despite several existing MMG studies of MF, there has not yet been a review of these. This study aimed to determine the current status on the use of MMG in measuring the conditions of MFs.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

Five electronic databases were extensively searched for potentially eligible studies published between 2003 and 2012. Two authors independently assessed selected articles using an MS-Word based form created for this review. Several domains (name of muscle, study type, sensor type, subject's types, muscle contraction, measured parameters, frequency range, hardware and software, signal processing and statistical analysis, results, applications, authors' conclusions and recommendations for future work) were extracted for further analysis. From a total of 2184 citations 119 were selected for full-text evaluation and 36 studies of MFs were identified. The systematic results find sufficient evidence that MMG may be used for assessing muscle fatigue, strength, and balance. This review also provides reason to believe that MMG may be used to examine muscle actions during movements and for monitoring muscle activities under various types of exercise paradigms.

CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE

Overall judging from the increasing number of articles in recent years, this review reports sufficient evidence that MMG is increasingly being used in different aspects of MF. Thus, MMG may be applied as a useful tool to examine diverse conditions of muscle activity. However, the existing studies which examined MMG for MFs were confined to a small sample size of healthy population. Therefore, future work is needed to investigate MMG, in examining MFs between a sufficient number of healthy subjects and neuromuscular patients.
