Terahertz topological photonic crystals with dual edge states for efficient routing

Topological photonic crystals with robust pseudo-spin and valley edge states have shown promising and wide applications in topological waveguides, lasers, and antennas. However, the limited bandwidth and intrinsic coupling properties of a single pseudo-spin or valley edge state have imposed restrictions on their multifunctional applications in integrated photonic circuits. Here, we propose a topological photonic crystal that can support pseudo-spin and valley edge states simultaneously in a single waveguiding channel, which effectively broadens the bandwidth and enables a multipath routing solution for terahertz information processing and broadcasting. We show that distorted Kekulé lattices can open two types of bandgaps with different topological properties simultaneously by molding the inter- and intra-unit cell coupling of the tight-binding model. The distinct topological origins of the edge states provide versatile signal routing paths toward free space radiation or on-chip self-localized edge modes by virtue of their intrinsic coupling properties. Such a powerful platform could function as an integrated photonic chip with capabilities of broadband on-chip signal processing and distributions that will especially benefit terahertz wireless communications.

Electronic spectrum of Kekulé patterned graphene considering second neighbor-interactions

The effects of second-neighbor interactions in Kekulé-Y patterned graphene electronic properties are studied starting from a tight-binding Hamiltonian. Thereafter, a low-energy effective Hamiltonian is obtained by projecting the high energy bands at the Γ point into the subspace defined by the Kekulé wave vector. The spectrum of the low energy Hamiltonian is in excellent agreement with the one obtained from a numerical diagonalization of the full tight-binding Hamiltonian. The main effect of the second-neighbour interaction is that a set of bands gains an effective mass and a shift in energy, thus lifting the degeneracy of the conduction bands at the Dirac point. This band structure is akin to a 'pseudo spin-one Dirac cone', a result expected for honeycomb lattices with a distinction between one third of the atoms in one sublattice. Finally, we present a study of Kekulé patterned graphene nanoribbons. This shows that the previous effects are enhanced as the width decreases. Moreover, edge states become dispersive, as expected due to second neighbors interaction, but here the Kek-Y bond texture results in an hybridization of both edge states. The present study shows the importance of second neighbors in realistic models of Kekulé patterned graphene, specially at surfaces.

Edge states of Floquet-Dirac semimetal in a laser-driven semiconductor quantum-well

Band crossings observed in a wide range of condensed matter systems are recognized as a key to understand low-energy fermionic excitations that behave as massless Dirac particles. Despite rapid progress in this field, the exploration of non-equilibrium topological states remains scarce and it has potential ability of providing a new platform to create unexpected massless Dirac states. Here we show that in a semiconductor quantum-well driven by a cw-laser with linear polarization, the optical Stark effect conducts bulk-band crossing, and the resulting Floquet-Dirac semimetallic phase supports an unconventional edge state in the projected one-dimensional Brillouin zone under a boundary condition that an electron is confined in the direction perpendicular to that of the laser polarization. Further, we reveal that this edge state mediates a transition between topological and non-topological edge states that is caused by tuning the laser intensity. We also show that the properties of the edge states are strikingly changed under a different boundary condition. It is found that such difference originates from that nearly fourfold-degenerate points exist in a certain intermediate region of the bulk Brillouin zone between high-symmetry points.
