Crucial Role of Crystal Field on Determining the Evolution Process of Janus MoSSe Monolayer: A First-Principles Study

Two-dimensional Janus MXY materials have been successfully synthesized from their parent species by CVD, SEAR, or PLD techniques. However, their detailed evolution process and underlying atomistic mechanism are far from understood conclusively, which are prompts for further research. Here, taking Janus MoSSe as a representation, the evolution process from MoS₂ is systematically investigated by first-principles calculation. The simulation shows that the lowest formation energy of MoS_(2-δ)Se_δ increases with selenylation ratio δ. Unexpectedly, Se atoms prefer to form a pair in next-nearest neighboring state (Se-NN-Se), eventually transferred into a growth rule of (6n + 1) during the evolution process. Particularly, it is demonstrated that the stability of the intermediate is mainly governed by the Mo 4d orbitals in different distorted triangular crystal fields, rendering a different degree of orbital splitting. Both the occupied and unoccupied Mo 4d orbitals of Se-NN-Se are farther from the Fermi level than other cases, which is clearly illustrated by d-band center theory. These findings will be helpful to understand the evolution process and the underlying atomistic mechanism of Janus MXY.

Through the Lens of a Momentum Microscope: Viewing Light-Induced Quantum Phenomena in 2D Materials

Van der Waals (vdW) materials at their 2D limit are diverse, flexible, and unique laboratories to study fundamental quantum phenomena and their future applications. Their novel properties rely on their pronounced Coulomb interactions, variety of crystal symmetries and spin-physics, and the ease of incorporation of different vdW materials to form sophisticated heterostructures. In particular, the excited state properties of many 2D semiconductors and semi-metals are relevant for their technological applications, particularly those that can be induced by light. In this paper, the recent advances made in studying out-of-equilibrium, light-induced, phenomena in these materials are reviewed using powerful, surface-sensitive, time-resolved photoemission-based techniques, with a particular emphasis on the emerging multi-dimensional photoemission spectroscopy technique of time-resolved momentum microscopy. The advances this technique has enabled in studying the nature and dynamics of occupied excited states in these materials are discussed. Then, the future research directions opened by these scientific and instrumental advancements are projected for studying the physics of 2D materials and the opportunities to engineer their band-structure and band-topology by laser fields.

Manipulating Weyl quasiparticles by orbital-selective photoexcitation in WTe2

Optical control of structural and electronic properties of Weyl semimetals allows development of switchable and dissipationless topological devices at the ultrafast scale. An unexpected orbital-selective photoexcitation in type-II Weyl material WTe2 is reported under linearly polarized light (LPL), inducing striking transitions among several topologically-distinct phases mediated by effective electron-phonon couplings. The symmetry features of atomic orbitals comprising the Weyl bands result in asymmetric electronic transitions near the Weyl points, and in turn a switchable interlayer shear motion with respect to linear light polarization, when a near-infrared laser pulse is applied. Consequently, not only annihilation of Weyl quasiparticle pairs, but also increasing separation of Weyl points can be achieved, complementing existing experimental observations. In this work, we provide a new perspective on manipulating the Weyl node singularity and coherent control of electron and lattice quantum dynamics simultaneously.
