Influence of nanoholes array geometrical parameters on magnetic properties of Dy-Fe antidot thin films

Tuning Thermoelectric Conversion Performance of BiSbTe/Epoxy Flexible Films with Dot Magnetic Arrays

Embedding of magnetic functional units into the thermoelectric (TE) materials has been demonstrated to be an effective way to enhance the TE conversion performance. However, the magnetic functional units in TE materials are all randomly distributed. In this paper, to explore the effect of the ordering of the magnetic functional units on TE conversion performance, a series of BiSbTe/epoxy flexible thermoelectromagnetic (TEM) films with dot magnetic arrays were successfully prepared by a two-step screen printing combined with a hot pressing process. TEM films with dot magnetic arrays can achieve high carrier mobility, while the carrier concentration increases due to large coercivity. Therefore, its electrical conductivities are significantly improved on the condition that it maintains a high Seebeck coefficient. The TEM film with hexagonal-dot magnetic arrays exhibits the best electrical transport properties, for which the room-temperature power factor reaches 1.51 mW·m^-1·K^-2, increased by 33.6 and 36.1% as compared with those of the pristine TE film and the TEM film with a continuous magnetic layer, respectively. This work provides a new way to enhance the TE conversion performance of flexible TEM films through the ordered magnetic arrays.

Tuning of the Titanium Oxide Surface to Control Magnetic Properties of Thin Iron Films

We describe the magnetic properties of thin iron films deposited on the nanoporous titanium oxide templates and analyze their dependance on nanopore radius. We then compare the results to a continuous iron film of the same thickness. Additionally, we investigate the evolution of the magnetic properties of these films after annealing. We demonstrate that the M(H) loops consist of two magnetic phases originating from the iron layer and iron oxides formed at the titanium oxide/iron interface. We perform deconvolution of hysteresis loops to extract information for each magnetic phase. Finally, we investigate the magnetic interactions between the phases and verify the presence of exchange coupling between them. We observe the altering of the magnetic properties by the nanopores as a magnetic hardening of the magnetic material. The ZFC-FC (Zero-field cooled/field cooled) measurements indicate the presence of a disordered glass state below 50 K, which can be explained by the formation of iron oxide at the titanium oxide-iron interface with a short-range magnetic order.

Enhancement of Exchange Bias and Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in CoO/Co Multilayer Thin Films by Tuning the Alumina Template Nanohole Size

The interest in magnetic nanostructures exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and exchange bias (EB) effect has increased in recent years owing to their applications in a new generation of spintronic devices that combine several functionalities. We present a nanofabrication process used to induce a significant out-of-plane component of the magnetic easy axis and EB. In this study, 30 nm thick CoO/Co multilayers were deposited on nanostructured alumina templates with a broad range of pore diameters, 34 nm ≤ Dp ≤ 96 nm, maintaining the hexagonal lattice parameter at 107 nm. Increase of the exchange bias field (HEB) and the coercivity (HC) (12 times and 27 times, respectively) was observed in the nanostructured films compared to the non-patterned film. The marked dependence of HEB and HC with antidot hole diameters pinpoints an in-plane to out-of-plane changeover of the magnetic anisotropy at a nanohole diameter of ∼75 nm. Micromagnetic simulation shows the existence of antiferromagnetic layers that generate an exceptional magnetic configuration around the holes, named as antivortex-state. This configuration induces extra high-energy superdomain walls for edge-to-edge distance >27 nm and high-energy stripe magnetic domains below 27 nm, which could play an important role in the change of the magnetic easy axis towards the perpendicular direction.

Nanoimprinted and Anodized Templates for Large-Scale and Low-Cost Nanopatterning

Nanopatterning to fabricate advanced nanostructured materials is a widely employed technology in a broad spectrum of applications going from spintronics and nanoelectronics to nanophotonics. This work reports on an easy route for nanopatterning making use of ordered porous templates with geometries ranging from straight lines to square, triangular or rhombohedral lattices, to be employed for the designed growth of sputtered materials with engineered properties. The procedure is based on large-scale nanoimprinting using patterned low-cost commercial disks, as 1-D grating stamps, followed by a single electrochemical process that allows one to obtain 1-D ordered porous anodic templates. Multiple imprinting steps at different angles enable more complex 2-D patterned templates. Subsequently, sputtering facilitates the growth of ferromagnetic antidot thin films (e.g., from 20 to 100 nm Co thick layers) with designed symmetries. This technique constitutes a non-expensive method for massive mold production and pattern generation avoiding standard lithographical techniques. In addition, it overcomes current challenges of the two-stage electrochemical porous anodic alumina templates: (i) allowing the patterning of large areas with high ordering and/or complex antidot geometries, and (ii) being less-time consuming.

Dependence of the Magnetization Process on the Thickness of Fe70Pd30 Nanostructured Thin Film

Fe–Pd magnetic shape-memory alloys are of major importance for microsystem applications due to their magnetically driven large reversible strains under moderate stresses. In this context, we focus on the synthesis of nanostructured Fe₇₀Pd₃₀ shape-memory alloy antidot array thin films with different layer thicknesses in the range from 20 nm to 80 nm, deposited onto nanostructured alumina membranes. A significant change in the magnetization process of nanostructured samples was detected by varying the layer thickness. The in-plane coercivity for the antidot array samples increased with decreasing layer thickness, whereas for non-patterned films the coercive field decreased. Anomalous coercivity dependence with temperature was detected for thinner antidot array samples, observing a critical temperature at which the in-plane coercivity behavior changed. A significant reduction in the Curie temperature for antidot samples with thinner layer thicknesses was observed. We attribute these effects to complex magnetization reversal processes and the three-dimensional magnetization profile induced by the nanoholes. These findings could be of major interest in the development of novel magnetic sensors and thermo-magnetic recording patterned media based on template-assisted deposition techniques.

Enhancement the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of nanopatterned hard/soft bilayer magnetic antidot arrays for spintronic application

Development of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy thin films is a requisite for many applications. In this work, we have illustrated the enhancement of the PMA of Hard (Co)/Soft (Permalloy, Py) ferromagnetic bilayers by depositing them onto nanoporous anodic alumina membranes with different hole diameters varying in the range between 30 nm and 95 nm. A dramatic change in the hysteresis loops behaviour with hole size, D, and magnetic surface cover ratio parameters has been observed: (1) for samples with small antidot hole diameters, the in-plane (INP) hysteresis loops show single-step magnetic behaviour; (2) for D = 75 nm, the hysteresis loops of Co/Py and Py samples exhibit a multistep magnetic behaviour; (3) a decreasing coercivity in the INP hysteresis loops for antidot arrays samples with D> 75 nm has been detected as a consequence of the reduction of the INP magnetic anisotropy and the rising of the out-of-plane component. A crossover of the magnetic anisotropy from the INP to out-of-plane for bilayer antidot samples has been observed for Co/Py ferromagnetic bilayers, favoured by the interfacial exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic materials. These findings can be of high interest for the development of novel magnetic sensors and for perpendicular-magnetic recording patterned media based on template-assisted deposition techniques.

Dynamic and static properties of stadium-shaped antidot arrays

In particular, we explored how by varying the shape of these antidot arrays from circular holes to stadium-shaped holes, we can effectively control the magnetic properties of the array. Using micromagnetic simulations we evidenced that coercivity is very sensitive to the shape of antidots, while the remanence is more robust to these changes. Furthermore, we studied the dynamic susceptibility of these systems, finding that it is possible to control both the position and the number of resonance peaks simply by changing the geometry of the holes. Thus, this work provides useful insights on the behavior of antidot arrays for different geometries, opening routes for the design and improvement of two-dimensional technologies.
