Carbon-nanotube-entangled Co,N-codoped carbon nanocomposite for oxygen reduction reaction

In situ Self-Catalyzed Growth of Manganese-Embedded 3D Flakes-Coated Carbon Rod as an Efficient Oxygen-Reduction Reaction Catalyst of Zinc-Air Batteries

The in situ self-catalyzed growth of manganese-embedded 3D flakes-coated carbon rods (GFC) as an efficient oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst of Zinc-air batteries is described for the first time. By optimizing the amount of Mn in the precursor, a series of 3D graphene-like flakes-coated carbon rods were synthesized. GFC with a doping amount of Mn of 10 % (GFC-10) exhibits excellent ORR performance with an onset potential of 0.94 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). The Zinc-air battery is constructed with GFC-10 as the cathode catalyst, and it exhibits a peak power density of 128.9 mW cm-2 and a cycling stability of 75 h at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , which are superior to the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C-based Zinc-air battery. Interestingly, the introduction of Mn facilitates the self-catalyzed growth of carbon rods, and the change of Mn amount can effectively regulate the morphology of materials. The improved ORR performance of the catalyst is ascribed to the synergistic effect of unique hierarchical porous structure, high-charge transport capacity, abundant carbon defects/edges and Mn-Nx sites. This research provides a new avenue to fabricating highly active Mn-based electrocatalysts for renewable energy systems.

High-Level Oxygen Reduction Catalysts Derived from the Compounds of High-Specific-Surface-Area Pine Peel Activated Carbon and Phthalocyanine Cobalt

Non-platinum carbon-based catalysts have attracted much more attention in recent years because of their low cost and outstanding performance, and are regarded as one of the most promising alternatives to precious metal catalysts. Activated carbon (AC), which has a large specific surface area (SSA), can be used as a carrier or carbon source at the same time. In this work, stable pine peel bio-based materials were used to prepare large-surface-area activated carbon and then compound with cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) to obtain a high-performance cobalt/nitrogen/carbon (Co-N-C) catalyst. High catalytic activity is related to increasing the number of Co particles on the large-specific-area activated carbon, which are related with the immersing effect of CoPc into the AC and the rational decomposed temperature of the CoPc ring. The synergy with N promoting the exposure of CoNx active sites is also important. The Eonset of the catalyst treated with a composite proportion of AC and CoPc of 1 to 2 at 800 °C (AC@CoPc-800-1-2) is 1.006 V, higher than the Pt/C (20 wt%) catalyst. Apart from this, compared with other AC/CoPc series catalysts and Pt/C (20 wt%) catalyst, the stability of AC/CoPc-800-1-2 is 87.8% in 0.1 M KOH after 20,000 s testing. Considering the performance and price of the catalyst in a practical application, these composite catalysts combining biomass carbon materials with phthalocyanine series could be widely used in the area of catalysts and energy storage.

High-pressure vapor-solid transformation of 2D template to derive 2D Co-N-C electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Two-dimensional (2D) cobalt zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67) have attracted significant research interests to synthesize cobalt and nitrogen co-doped carbon-based (Co-N-C) catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, most of the current synthetic approaches of 2D ZIF-67 are energy-intensive, environmentally hazardous and low-yield. Herein, a feasible and efficient 'morphology-retaining method via a high-pressure vapor-solid reaction' are reported to synthesize 2D ZIF-67 nanosheets by using 2D cobalt carbonate hydroxide template. In the strategy, the high-pressure vapor caused by sublimation of 2-Melm and the pores formed from effusion of CO₂during transformation ensure the complete transformation from 2D template to 2D ZIF-67. The corresponding 2D Co-N-C catalyst exhibits comparable ORR electrocatalytic activity and better stability than Pt/C in alkaline media. The present method is expected to offer a feasible and universal way to efficiently synthesize 2D M-N-C catalysts.

Zeolitic imidazole framework derived N-doped porous carbon/metal cobalt nanoparticles hybrid for oxygen electrocatalysis and rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Bifunctional electrocatalysts with high catalytic property for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are vital for high-performance zinc-air batteries (ZnABs). In this study, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with hollow structure (C-N/Co (1/2)) has been successfully prepared through carbonization of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and evaporation of Zn ions at high temperature. With Co nanoparticles encapsulated by an N-doped porous carbon matrix, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability in aqueous alkaline solution over an extended period and good tolerance to the methanol crossover effect. The integration of an N-doped graphitic carbon outer shell and Co nanoparticles enables high ORR and OER activity, as evidenced by ZnAB using the catalyst C-N/Co (1/2) in an air cathode.
