Abstract
We refine and slightly enlarge the recently proposed first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity to include gravitational scalar fields with timelike and past-directed gradients. The implications and subtleties arising in this situation are discussed and an exact cosmological solution of scalar-tensor theory in first-order thermodynamics is revisited in light of these results.

Abstract
Teleparallel gravity (TG) has significantly increased in popularity in recent decades, bringing attention to Einstein's other theory of gravity. In this Review, we give a comprehensive introduction to how teleparallel geometry is developed as a gauge theory of translations together with all the other properties of gauge field theory. This relates the geometry to the broader metric-affine approach to forming gravitational theories where we describe a systematic way of constructing consistent teleparallel theories that respect certain physical conditions such as local Lorentz invariance. We first use TG to formulate a teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (GR) which is dynamically equivalent to GR but which may have different behaviors for other scenarios, such as quantum gravity. After setting this foundation, we describe the plethora of modified teleparallel theories of gravity that have been proposed in the literature. We attempt to connect them together into general classes of covariant gravitational theories. Of particular interest, we highlight the recent proposal of a teleparallel analogue of Horndeski gravity which offers the possibility of reviving all of the regular Horndeski contributions. In the second part of the Review, we first survey works in teleparallel astrophysics literature where we focus on the open questions in this regime of physics. We then discuss the cosmological consequences for the various formulations of TG. We do this at background level by exploring works using various approaches ranging from dynamical systems to Noether symmetries, and more. Naturally, we then discuss perturbation theory, firstly by giving a concise approach in which this can be applied in TG theories and then apply it to a number of important theories in the literature. Finally, we examine works in observational and precision cosmology across the plethora of proposal theories. This is done using some of the latest observations and is used to tackle cosmological tensions which may be alleviated in teleparallel cosmology. We also introduce a number of recent works in the application of machine learning to gravity, we do this through deep learning and Gaussian processes, together with discussions about other approaches in the literature.

Abstract
We continue our overview of mathematical cosmology with a survey of the third and fourth periods of the development of the subject. The first Part includes the first two periods and is published separately. The third period (1980-2000) continues here with brief descriptions of the main ideas of inflation, the multiverse, quantum, Kaluza-Klein, and string cosmologies, wormholes and baby universes, cosmological stability and modified gravity. The last period, which ends today, includes various more advanced topics such as M-theoretic cosmology, braneworlds, the landscape, topological issues, the measure problem, genericity, dynamical singularities and dark energy. We emphasize certain threads that run throughout the whole period of development of theoretical cosmology and underline their importance in the overall structure of the field. We end this outline with an inclusion of the abstracts of all papers contributed to the second part of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, theme issue 'The future of mathematical cosmology'. This article is part of the theme issue 'The future of mathematical cosmology, Volume 2'.

Abstract
Modified gravity theories can accommodate exact solutions, for which the metric has the same form as the one in general relativity, i.e., stealth solutions. One problem with these stealth solutions is that perturbations around them exhibit strong coupling when the solutions are realized in degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theories. We show that the strong coupling problem can be circumvented in the framework of the so-called U-DHOST theories, in which the degeneracy is partially broken in such a way that higher-derivative terms are degenerate only in the unitary gauge. In this sense, the scordatura effect is built-in in U-DHOST theories in general. There is an apparent Ostrogradsky mode in U-DHOST theories, but it does not propagate as it satisfies a three-dimensional elliptic differential equation on a spacelike hypersurface. We also clarify how this nonpropagating mode, i.e., the "shadowy" mode shows up at the nonlinear level.

Abstract
In modified gravity theories, gravitational wave propagations are presented in nonstandard ways. We consider a friction term different from GR and constrain the modified gravitational waves propagation from observations. The modified gravitational waves produce anisotropies and polarization, which generate measurable tensor power spectra. We explore the impact of the friction term on the power spectrum of B-modes and the impact on the constraints on the other parameters (e.g., r or At) when ν0 is allowed to vary in the Monte Carlo analyses from Planck+BK18 datasets. If we assume the result of the scalar perturbations is unchanged, the inflation consistency relation alters with the friction term. In the ΛCDM+r+ν0 model, the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the amplitude of the tensor spectrum are obviously influenced.

Abstract
We review a set of the possible ways to constrain extended gravity models at Galaxy clusters scales (the regime of dark energy explanations and comparison with ΛCDM), for black hole shadows, gravitational wave astronomy, binary pulsars, the Solar system and a Large Hadron Collider (consequences for high-energy physics at TeV scale). The key idea is that modern experimental and observational precise data provide us with the chance to go beyond general relativity.

Abstract
This paper presents a noncommutative (NC) version of an extended Sáez–Ballester (SB) theory. Concretely, considering the spatially flat Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) metric, we propose an appropriate dynamical deformation between the conjugate momenta and, applying the Hamiltonian formalism, obtain deformed equations of motion. In our model, the NC parameter appears linearly in the deformed Poisson bracket and the equations of the NC SB cosmology. When it goes to zero, we get the corresponding commutative counterparts. Even by restricting our attention to a particular case, where there is neither an ordinary matter nor a scalar potential, we show that the effects of the noncommutativity provide interesting results: applying numerical endeavors for very small values of the NC parameter, we show that (i) at the early times of the universe, there is an inflationary phase with a graceful exit, for which the relevant nominal condition is satisfied; (ii) for the late times, there is a zero acceleration epoch. By establishing an appropriate dynamical framework, we show that the results (i) and (ii) can be obtained for many sets of the initial conditions and the parameters of the model. Finally, we indicate that, at the level of the field equations, one may find a close resemblance between our NC model and the Starobinsky inflationary model.

Abstract
We demonstrate that black holes and stars in general relativity can be destabilized by perturbations of nonminimally coupled vector fields. Focusing on static and spherically symmetric backgrounds, our analysis shows that black holes with sufficiently small mass and stars with sufficiently high densities are subject to ghost- or gradient-type instabilities. This holds for a large class of Einstein-Proca theories with nonminimal couplings, including generalized Proca models that have sparked attention for their potential role in cosmology and astrophysics. The stability criteria translate into bounds of relevance for low-scale theories of dark energy and for ultralight dark matter scenarios.

Abstract
The metric of a spacetime can be greatly simplified if the spacetime is circular. We prove that in generic effective theories of gravity, the spacetime of a stationary, axisymmetric, and asymptotically flat solution must be circular if the solution can be obtained perturbatively from a solution in the general relativity limit. This result applies to a broad class of gravitational theories that include arbitrary scalars and vectors in their light sector, so long as their nonstandard kinetic terms and nonmininal couplings to gravity are treated perturbatively.

Abstract
We prove that vector fields described by the generalized Proca class of theories do not admit consistent coupling with a gravitational sector defined by a scalar–tensor theory of the degenerate type. Under the assumption that there exists a frame in which the Proca field interacts with gravity only through the metric tensor, our analysis shows that at least one of the constraints associated with the degeneracy of the scalar–tensor sector is inevitably lost whenever the vector theory includes coupling with the Christoffel connection.

Abstract
The main difficulties in constructing a viable early Universe bouncing model are: to bypass the observational and theoretical no-go theorem, to construct a stable non-singular bouncing phase, and perhaps, the major concern of it is to construct a stable attractor solution which can evade the Belinsky–Khalatnikov–Lifshitz (BKL) instability as well. In this article, in the homogeneous and isotropic background, we extensively study the stability analysis of the recently proposed viable non-minimal bouncing theory in the presence of an additional barotropic fluid and show that, the bouncing solution remains stable and can evade BKL instability for a wide range of the model parameter. We provide the expressions that explain the behavior of the Universe in the vicinity of the required fixed point i.e., the bouncing solution and compare our results with the minimal theory and show that ekpyrosis is the most stable solution in any scenario.

Abstract
We propose a novel mechanism to test time variation of the propagation speed of gravitational waves (GWs) in light of GWs astronomy. As the stochastic GWs experience the whole history of cosmic expansion, they encode potential observational evidence of such variation. We report that, one feature of a varying GWs speed is that the energy spectrum of GWs will present resonantly enhanced peaks if the GWs speed oscillates in time at high-energy scales. Such oscillatory behavior arises in a wide class of modified gravity theories. The amplitude of these peaks can be at reach by current and forthcoming GWs instruments, hence making the underlying theories falsifiable. This mechanism reveals that probing the variation of GWs speed can be a promising way to search for new physics beyond general relativity.

Abstract
Extremal cosmological black holes are analysed in the framework of the most general second order scalar-tensor theory, the so-called Horndeski gravity. Such extremal black holes are a particular case of Schwarzschild-De Sitter black holes that arises when the black hole horizon and the cosmological one coincide. Such metric is induced by a particular value of the effective cosmological constant and is known as Nariai spacetime. The existence of this type of solutions is studied when considering the Horndeski Lagrangian and its stability is analysed, where the so-called anti-evaporation regime is studied. Contrary to other frameworks, the radius of the horizon remains stable for some cases of the Horndeski Lagrangian when considering perturbations at linear order.

Abstract
We study a quantization via fractional derivative of a nonminimal derivative coupling cosmological theory, namely, the Fab Four John theory. Its Hamiltonian version presents the issue of fractional powers in the momenta. That problem is solved here by the application of the so-called conformable fractional derivative. This leads to a Wheeler–DeWitt equation of second order, showing that a Bohm–de Broglie interpretation can be constructed. That combination of fractional quantization and Bohmian interpretation provides us a new quantization method, in which the quantum potential is the criterion to say if a quantum solution is acceptable or not to be further studied. We show that a wide range of solutions for the scale factor is possible. Among all of those, a bouncing solution analogous to the perfect fluid cosmology seems to deserve special attention.

Abstract
Application of nonlinear symmetry realization technique to gravity is studied. We identify the simplest extensions of the Poincare group suitable for nonlinear realization at the level of physical fields. Two simple models are proposed. The first one introduces additional scalar degrees of freedom that may be suitable for driving inflation. The second one describes states with well-defined mass that lack a linear interaction with matter states. We argue that this phenomenon points out a necessity to draw a distinction between gravitational states with well-defined masses and states that participate in interaction with matter.

Abstract
We propose helioseismology as a new, precision probe of fifth forces at astrophysical scales, and apply it on the most general scalar-tensor theories for dark energy, known as degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor theories. We explain how the effect of the fifth force on the solar interior leaves an observable imprint on the acoustic oscillations, and under certain assumptions we numerically compute the nonradial pulsation eigenfrequencies within modified gravity. We illustrate its constraining power by showing that helioseismic observations have the potential to improve constraints on the strength of the fifth force by more than 2 orders of magnitude, as -1.8×10^{-3}≤Y≤1.2×10^{-3} (at 2σ). This in turn would suggest constraints of similar order for the theory's free functions around a cosmological background (α_{H}, β_{1}).

Abstract
We study disformal transformations in the context of scalar extensions to teleparallel gravity, in which the gravitational interaction is mediated by the torsion of a flat, metric compatible connection. We find a generic class of scalar–torsion actions which is invariant under disformal transformations, and which possesses different invariant subclasses. For the most simple of these subclasses we explicitly derive all terms that may appear in the action. We propose to study actions from this class as possible teleparallel analogues of healthy beyond Horndeski theories.
