Development and Characterization of a High Sensitivity Segmented Fast Neutron Spectrometer (FaNS-2)

Optimum lithium loading of a liquid scintillator for neutron and neutrino detection

Neutral particle detection in high-background environments is greatly aided by the ability to easily load ⁶Li into liquid scintillators. We describe a readily available and inexpensive liquid scintillation cocktail stably loaded with a Li mass fraction up to 1 %. Compositions that give thermodynamically stable microemulsions (reverse-micellar systems) were explored, using a Compton spectrum quenching technique to distinguish these from unstable emulsions. Scintillation light yield and transmittance were characterized. Pulse shape discrimination (PSD) was measured using a ²⁵²Cf source, showing that electron-like and proton-like recoil events are well-resolved even for Li loading up to 1 %, providing a means of background suppression in neutron/neutrino detectors. While samples in this work were prepared with ^nat Li (7.59 % ⁶Li), the neutron capture peak was clearly visible in the PSD spectrum; this implies that while extremely high capture efficiency could be achieved with ⁶Li-enriched material, a very inexpensive neutron-sensitive detector can be prepared with ^nat Li.

A Monte Carlo feasibility study for neutron based real-time range verification in proton therapy

Uncertainties in the proton range in tissue during proton therapy limit the precision in treatment delivery. These uncertainties result in expanded treatment margins, thereby increasing radiation dose to healthy tissue. Real-time range verification techniques aim to reduce these uncertainties in order to take full advantage of the finite range of the primary protons. In this paper, we propose a novel concept for real-time range verification based on detection of secondary neutrons produced in nuclear interactions during proton therapy. The proposed detector concept is simple; consisting of a hydrogen-rich converter material followed by two charged particle tracking detectors, mimicking a proton recoil telescopic arrangement. Neutrons incident on the converter material are converted into protons through elastic and inelastic (n,p) interactions. The protons are subsequently detected in the tracking detectors. The information on the direction and position of these protons is then utilized in a new reconstruction algorithm to estimate the depth distribution of neutron production by the proton beam, which in turn is correlated with the primary proton range. In this paper, we present the results of a Monte Carlo feasibility study and show that the proposed concept could be used for real-time range verification with millimetric precision in proton therapy.

Conception of a New Recoil Proton Telescope for Real-Time Neutron Spectrometry in Proton-Therapy

Neutrons are the main type of secondary particles emitted in proton-therapy. Because of the risk of secondary cancer and other late occurring effects, the neutron dose should be included in the out-of-field dose calculations. A neutron spectrometer has to be used to take into account the energy dependence of the neutron radiological weighting factor. Due to its high dependence on various parameters of the irradiation (beam, accelerator, patient), the neutron spectrum should be measured independently for each treatment.

The current reference method for the measurement of the neutron energy, the Bonner Sphere System, consists of several homogeneous polyethylene spheres with increasing diameters equipped with a proportional counter. It provides a highresolution reconstruction of the neutron spectrum but requires a time-consuming work of signal deconvolution. New neutron spectrometers are being developed, but the main experimental limitation remains the high neutron flux in proton therapy treatment rooms. A new model of a real-time neutron spectrometer, based on a Recoil Proton Telescope technology, has been developed at the IPHC. It enables a real-time high-rate reconstruction of the neutron spectrum from the measurement of the recoil proton trajectory and energy. A new fast-readout microelectronic integrated sensor, called FastPixN, has been developed for this specific purpose.

A first prototype, able to detect neutrons between 5 and 20 MeV, has already been validated for metrology with the AMANDE facility at Cadarache. The geometry of the new Recoil Proton Telescope has been optimized via extensive Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations. Uncertainty sources have been carefully studied in order to improve simultaneously efficiency and energy resolution, and solutions have been found to suppress the various expected backgrounds. We are currently upgrading the prototype for secondary neutron detection in proton therapy applications.
