Data Mining of Polymer Phase Transitions upon Temperature Changes by Small and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering Combined with Raman Spectroscopy

The complex physical transformations of polymers upon external thermodynamic changes are related to the molecular length of the polymer and its associated multifaceted energetic balance. The understanding of subtle transitions or multistep phase transformation requires real-time phenomenological studies using a multi-technique approach that covers several length-scales and chemical states. A combination of X-ray scattering techniques with Raman spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry was conducted to correlate the structural changes from the conformational chain to the polymer crystal and mesoscale organization. Current research applications and the experimental combination of Raman spectroscopy with simultaneous SAXS/WAXS measurements coupled to a DSC is discussed. In particular, we show that in order to obtain the maximum benefit from simultaneously obtained high-quality data sets from different techniques, one should look beyond traditional analysis techniques and instead apply multivariate analysis. Data mining strategies can be applied to develop methods to control polymer processing in an industrial context. Crystallization studies of a PVDF blend with a fluoroelastomer, known to feature complex phase transitions, were used to validate the combined approach and further analyzed by MVA.

A portable extruder for in situ wide angle x-ray scattering study on multi-dimensional flow field induced crystallization of polymer

We have designed and constructed a portable extruder with a rotatable mandrel, which can be employed to study the multi-dimensional flow field (MDFF) induced crystallization of polymer combined with in situ wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS). With the piston driving the melt sample to flow along the channel, a direct axial shear field is achieved. At the same time, the central mandrel keeps rotating under a stable speed, providing the sample with an additional circumferential shear field. By presetting different proportions of the two shear fields, namely, axial and circumferential, various flow states of the sample can be obtained, which makes it capable of investigating the effects of MDFF on polymer crystallization. We have performed an in situ WAXS experiment of MDFF induced crystallization of isotactic polypropylene based on the portable extruder at the beam line BL16B in Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The rheological and structural information is collected simultaneously, which manifests the viability of the portable extruder on regulating MDFF and can provide guidance for polymer processing.

Oriented Gamma Phase in Isotactic Polypropylene Homopolymer

The presence of γ-phase in isotactic polypropylene is well-known but, up until now, could only be induced by specific processing conditions or material modifications. Typically, for Ziegler-Natta (ZN) iPPs pressures of 2000 bar are required, otherwise, metallocene (M) iPPs and copolymerization using olefin-type counits should be used. Here we show that crystallization under the unique combination of moderate pressure (p ≥ 900 bar) and strong shear flow oriented specimens with high contents of γ-phase are created in ZN-iPPs. The oriented morphology is qualified as a shish-kebab structure that templates densely branched γ-lamellae on parent α-lamellae as well as directly to the shish backbone.

Extensional rheometer for in situ x-ray scattering study on flow-induced crystallization of polymer

We designed and constructed an extensional rheometer for in situ small and wide angle x-ray study on flow-induced crystallization of polymer. Two rotating drums with an axis distance of 20 mm are employed to impose extensional deformation on the samples. With a constant angular velocity, the two drums generate a constant Henkcy strain rate as sample length for testing keeps constant during deformation. An ionic liquid is used as heating medium to prevent polymer melt from bending downward due to gravity, which is excellent in terms of high thermal stability, low viscosity, and relative low adsorption on x-ray. Flow-induced crystallization experiments are conducted with this apparatus on x-ray scattering station in Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), which allows us to collect rheological and structural data simultaneously and may lead to a better understanding on flow-induced crystallization of polymer.
