Oesophageal pseudodiverticulum after foregut duplication cyst excision: Case report and literature review

Oesophageal pseudodiverticula rarely occur after excision of benign oesophageal neoplasms. While management and outcomes have been reported in the adult leiomyoma literature, sparse data exist on the occurrence and management of pseudodiverticula after foregut duplication cyst excision. We discuss our experience with a paediatric patient and review relevant literature regarding operative techniques and surgical outcomes.

Thoracoscopic resection of a cervical esophageal duplication cyst in a 3-month-old infant: a case report

Esophageal duplication cysts are rare congenital cystic masses that may induce various symptoms. Complete surgical resection is the standard treatment. Although thoracoscopic resection has recently become more popular, cervical esophageal duplication cysts located at the upper third esophagus are difficult to excise via thoracoscopic approach. Here we present a case of a cervical esophageal duplication cyst in an infant, which could be resected via thoracoscopic approach only.

Laparoscopic excision of an esophageal duplication cyst

Esophageal duplication cysts are uncommon embryologic entities that are often discovered incidentally. When identified, complete excision is the recommended treatment regardless of symptoms. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy with a distal esophageal duplication cyst discovered incidentally during laparoscopy for fundoplication. The esophageal duplication cyst was completely resected and a 360-degree fundoplication was then constructed, incorporating the cyst resection site. This is only the second report describing complete laparoscopic excision of an incidentally discovered esophageal duplication cyst in a child. This method is a safe and effective way of managing these lesions.

[Esophageal cervical duplication revealed by stridor: a case report]

Esophageal duplications are rare malformations. They account for 15 to 20% of esophageal malformations. Duplications are cystic or, rarely, tubular. The location is thoracic in 95% of the cases. The clinical manifestations are mostly related to compression of the neighboring organs. Treatment is surgical. We report a case of esophageal duplication in a 22-month-old child; the major symptom was congenital stridor. The diagnosis of esophageal duplication was suspected at the chest computed tomography imaging study and confirmed after excision and pathologic examination.

Thoracoscopic stapled resection of multiple esophageal duplication cysts with different pathological findings

Esophageal duplication cyst is a rare congenital esophageal anomaly of the foregut. This cyst usually occurs in isolation, and thus far, was treated by enucleation through thoracoscopic or thoracotomic surgery. Here we report a case of multiple esophageal duplication cysts that showed different pathological findings, i.e., the cysts were lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar and stratified squamous epithelium. Esophageal cysts were incidentally detected in a 53-year-old man during the treatment of pneumonia. In chest-computed tomography, the cysts showed a thin wall and homogeneous inner density, while in endoscopy, no communication with esophageal mucosa was observed. We resected the esophageal cysts with endo-staplers under thoracoscopic surgery. No postoperative complications, including esophageal mucosal injury, occurred. A follow-up chest computed tomography revealed the complete resection of the cysts.

Esophageal duplication cyst is a rare congenital alteration. Most of these cysts are asymptomatic and are usually identified as an incidental finding. These lesions can develop complications (bleeding, infection, etc.) and even malignant degeneration. Consequently, the treatment of choice is surgical.
