Abstract
BACKGROUND Inactivity is a significant contributor to non-communicable diseases. In Lebanon, the World Health Organization reported a rising prevalence of physical inactivity among adults. Various studies highlight the benefits of physical activity (PA) on health, influenced by sociodemographic factors, gender, age, and diet. This study aims to examine PA correlates in Lebanese adults, focusing on blood biomarkers. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 296 adults aged ≥18 years. Participants completed a brief sociodemographic and food frequency questionnaire, underwent anthropometric measurements, and provided fasting blood samples. PA was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form and was divided into two categories: low PA corresponding to any walking activity, and moderate to vigorous PA for activities requiring physical effort. Descriptive statistics were computed for sociodemographic characteristics, BMI, waist circumference, energy intake, PA levels, and blood biomarkers. Logistic regressions were used to assess PA and blood biomarkers associations, adjusted for relevant covariates. RESULTS Gender and marital status were associated with moderate to vigorous PA levels. No association was found between PA levels, BMI, waist circumference, diet, or blood biomarkers. Multivariate binary logistic regression analyses showed that females (OR=1.96, 95% CI: 1.16-3.31) and those with LDL moderate risk (OR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.02-3.66), and high risk (OR=2.44, 95% CI: 1.08-5.55), were more likely to show moderate-to-high PA levels. CONCLUSION PA was positively associated with gender and disease risk, particularly LDL, a biomarker known to jeopardize cardiovascular health. Disease risk appears to be a driving factor in performing physical activity among women. These results may guide early nutrition interventions endorsing physical activity as a preventive measure to decrease the prevalence of cardio metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Obesity is a global health issue intricately linked to metabolic syndrome (MetS), insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Anthropometric indices, particularly those measuring central obesity, have emerged as more reliable predictors of these metabolic disorders than general obesity indices such as body mass index (BMI). However, the relative predictive power of these indices remains debated, particularly across sexes. This study aimed to evaluate the discriminative performance of various anthropometric measures, including lipid accumulation product (LAP), BMI, waist circumference (WC), and visceral adiposity index (VAI), in predicting insulin sensitivity, β-cell function, MetS, and dyslipidemia using National Health and Nutritional Evaluation Survey III (NHANES III) data. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 3,706 adults from the NHANES III database was conducted. Anthropometric indices were compared against insulin sensitivity Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA)-S, β-cell function (HOMA-B), metabolic syndrome (MetS) status, and dyslipidemia. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves and linear regression models were used to identify thresholds for predicting metabolic abnormalities. Results: LAP emerged as the most discriminative index across all outcomes, outperforming BMI and WC, particularly in predicting insulin sensitivity and β-cell function in males. In females, BMI was superior in predicting β-cell function. VAI demonstrated the strongest association with dyslipidemia but was less effective in predicting insulin resistance. Conclusion: LAP significantly outperforms conventional anthropometric indices in identifying insulin resistance and MetS, highlighting its potential as a screening tool for cardiometabolic risk. Gender differences in the predictive abilities of these measures suggest that BMI may retain value in assessing β-cell function in females. VAI should be considered when screening for dyslipidemia but is less effective for insulin resistance.

Abstract
The prevalence of adolescent obesity in the Middle-East is considered among the highest in the world. Obesity in adolescents is associated with several cardiometabolic abnormalities, the constellation of which is referred to as the metabolic syndrome (MetS). This multi-country cross-sectional study aims to determine the optimal cut-off values for body fat (BF); body mass index (BMI) z-score; waist circumference (WC) percentile, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) for the prediction of MetS among adolescents from Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia (KSA), Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. A secondary objective is to examine the validity of Bioelectrical Impendence Vector Analysis (BIVA) in estimating BF against the deuterium dilution technique (DDL). In each country, a sample of 210 adolescents will be recruited. Data collection will include demographics, socioeconomic, lifestyle and dietary data using a multi-component questionnaire; anthropometric measurements will be obtained and body composition will be assessed using the DDL and BIVA; blood pressure and biochemical assessment will be performed for the identification of the MetS. Receiver operating characteristic analyses will be undertaken to determine optimal cut-off values of BMI, WC, MUAC and BF in identifying those with MetS. Odds ratios (OR) and their respective 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association of the anthropometric measurements with MetS will be computed based on multiple logistic regression analysis models. The Bland and Altman approach will be adopted to compare BIVA against the reference DDL method for the determination of body composition parameters. This study responds to the need for ethnic-specific anthropometric cut-offs for the identification of excess adiposity and associated cardiometabolic risks in the adolescent population. The adoption of the generated cut-offs may assist policy makers, public health professionals and clinical practitioners in providing ethnic-specific preventive and curative strategies tailored to adolescents in the region.

Abstract
The prevalence of cardiometabolic abnormalities is high globally. This is concerning since these abnormalities increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. Using noninvasive, low-cost, and ethnic-specific anthropometric indices is crucial for widespread screening and early detection of cardiometabolic abnormalities. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 221 Lebanese participants (62.9% females; mean age: 43.36 ± 16.05 years; mean body mass index (BMI): 28.43 ± 6.10 Kg/m2). The main outcome measure was cardiometabolic abnormality (CMA), defined as the presence of at least two or more non-anthropometric components of the Metabolic Syndrome. Several anthropometric indices: Total body fat percent, Conicity index, Abdominal volume index (AVI), Weight-adjusted-waist index, Waist circumference (WC), Neck circumference, Hip circumference, Waist-to-hip ratio, Waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), Neck-to-height ratio, and BMI were assessed in their prediction of CMA, using logistic regression modelling and c-statistic [95% confidence intervals (CIs)], and calibration plots, as well sensitivity, specificity, and negative and positive predictive values measures. The Benjamini-Hochberg correction procedure was used to correct for multiple testing. The prevalence of CMA was 52.0% (47.5% in females and 59.8% in males). Significant associations were found between all the anthropometric indices and CMA, except for neck-to-height ratio. AVI and WC were most predictive for CMA in the total sample. WtHR and WC were most predictive in females with suggested cut-off values of 0.58 and 91.25 cm, whereas AVI and WC were most predictive in males with suggested cut-off values of 19.61 and 101.50 cm. The neck-to-height measurement had the lowest predictive ability for CMA. Adding anthropometric indices to sociodemographic variables did not significantly improve model discrimination. AVI, WHtR, and WC best predicted CMA in a sample of Lebanese adults. These less invasive, low-cost, easy-to-measure indices can be used to screen widely for CMA to better manage and prevent disease and subsequent morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Background Nowadays, metabolic syndrome (MetS) has become a great public health crisis that threatens too many lives worldwide. Many previous studies have been investigated the association between MetS and anthropometric indices. This study is aimed at investigating the association between anthropometric indices with gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). We were using data from a large population-based cohort of seemingly healthy women and men. Methods A total of 7216 participants were included in this study. The serum levels of GGT, ALP, ALT, and AST with bioimpedance measures were obtained at the time of enrollment. Multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between anthropometric indices and serum levels of the aforementioned laboratory tests. Results Serum levels of GGT, ALP, ALT, and AST significantly correlated with body mass index (BMI). Only ALP had a significant association with visceral fat area (VFA). AST, ALT, and ALP levels had a positive correlation with 50 kHz whole-body phase. Conclusion From the findings of this study, body mass index consistently appeared a good predictor of elevated hepatic enzymes and triglycerides. Thus, it can be helpful in clinical settings to identify patients at risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which is closely related to metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
AIMS Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in the world. Many modifiable risk factors have been reported to synergistically act in the development of CVDs. We aimed to compare the predictive power of anthropometric indices, as well as to provide the best cut-off point for these indicators in a large population of Iranian people for the prediction of CVDs and CVD risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS All the data used in the present study were obtained from Khuzestan comprehensive health study (KCHS). Anthropometric indices, including BMI (body mass index), WC (waist circumference), HC (hip circumference), WHR (waist-to-hip ratio), WHtR (waist-to-height ratio), ABSI (a body shape index), as well as CVD risk factors [dyslipidaemia, abnormal blood pressure (BP), and hyperglycaemia] were recorded among 30 429 participants. WHtR had the highest adjusted odds ratios amongst anthropometric indices for all the risk factors and CVDs. WC had the highest predictive power for dyslipidaemia and hyperglycaemia [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.622, 0.563; specificity 61%, 59%; sensitivity 69%, 60%; cut-off point 87.95, 92.95 cm, respectively], while WHtR had the highest discriminatory power for abnormal BP (AUC = 0.585; specificity 60%; sensitivity 65%; cut-off point 0.575) and WHR tended to be the best predictor of CVDs (AUC = 0.527; specificity 58%; sensitivity 64%; cut-off point 0.915). CONCLUSION In this study, we depicted a picture of the Iranian population in terms of anthropometric measurement and its association with CVD risk factors and CVDs. Different anthropometric indices showed different predictive power for CVD risk factors in the Iranian population.
