Intensity of 40K Decay Fluctuations an Indicator of an Environmental Factor Determining Infradian Rhythms of Mouse Motor Activity, Circulating Cortisol in Rabbits, and Proliferation of L-929 Cultured Cells

The multi-day dynamics of the intensity of 40K decay fluctuations was compared with motor activity of laboratory mice, circulating cortisol in rabbits, and proliferation of fibroblast-like cultured cells L-929. A positive correlation was established between the intensity of decay fluctuations on the one hand, and total daily motor activity in mice and plasma cortisol level in rabbits, on the other hand. In addition, a negative correlation was observed between 40K decay fluctuations and proliferative activity of the cultured cells. Interestingly, these close correlations were observed not only against the background 4-day rhythm, but also in the time when any rhythmicity was absent. Thus, the intensity of 40K decay fluctuations is an indicator of a biotropic environmental factor that augments motor activity and raises the circulating cortisol in animals and down-regulates proliferation of cultured cells.

Influence of electromagnetic fields on the circadian rhythm: Implications for human health and disease

Living organisms have evolved within the natural electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of the earth which comprise the global atmospheric electrical circuit, Schumann resonances (SRs) and the geomagnetic field. Research suggests that the circadian rhythm, which controls several physiological functions in the human body, can be influenced by light but also by the earth's EMFs. Cyclic solar disturbances, including sunspots and seasonal weakening of the geomagnetic field, can affect human health, possibly by disrupting the circadian rhythm and downstream physiological functions. Severe disruption of the circadian rhythm increases inflammation which can induce fatigue, fever and flu-like symptoms in a fraction of the population and worsen existing symptoms in old and diseased individuals, leading to periodic spikes of infectious and chronic diseases. Possible mechanisms underlying sensing of the earth's EMFs involve entrainment via electrons and electromagnetic waves, light-dependent radical pair formation in retina cryptochromes, and paramagnetic magnetite nanoparticles. Factors such as electromagnetic pollution from wireless devices, base antennas and low orbit internet satellites, shielding by non-conductive materials used in shoes and buildings, and local geomagnetic anomalies may also affect sensing of the earth's EMFs by the human body and contribute to circadian rhythm disruption and disease development.

Association of Infradian Rhythms of Motor Activity, Concentration of Glucocorticoid Hormones, and One-Minute-Step Oscillations of Body Temperature with Intensity of Fluctuations of Secondary Cosmic Rays

The study compared the daily mean intensity of one-minute-step fluctuations in intensity of the secondary cosmic rays reflected by neutron count rate and dynamics of body temperature, motor activity, as well as concentration of glucocorticoid hormones in birds and rodents. A positive correlation was established between body temperature oscillations and neutron count rate fluctuations. A similar correlation was observed between physical parameter (neutron count rate), on the one hand, and daily mean motor activity and concentration of glucocorticoid hormones in the animals. The periods and phases of these processes presented in synchronous time series coincided. The facts of simultaneous variations or disturbances of the periods in dynamics of biological and physical parameters attest to their relationships. The study concluded that the infradian rhythms with the periods of 3-5 days depend on some external environmental factor related to fluctuations in intensity of secondary cosmic rays.

Birth month and longevity: birth month of victims of sudden (SCD, ≤1 h) and rapid (RCD, ≤24 h) cardiac deaths

BACKGROUND

After a publication of a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA in 2001, we published three studies related to birth month and morbidity of patients that can affect longevity. The aim of this study is to check two groups of cardiac deaths, consisting of more than 50% of cardiovascular mortality in the industrial world, to examine this paradigm.

METHODS

Patients suffering rapid cardiac death (RCD) (≤24 h) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) (≤1 h) in Lithuanian Medical Science University hospital, a tertiary 3000-bed facility, in 2000-2010 were studied. In total, 1239 RCDs and 324 SCDs were included in this study. Monthly, quarterly, trimester and half-year comparisons of the patients' birth month population were studied.

RESULTS

A difference in birth month distribution of the study patients was observed. For RCDs (≤24 h), the highest numbers were found for January (11.0%) and May (10.3%), whereas for the SCDs (≤1 h), April (13.3%) and January (10.5%) dominated. The least numbers were in November (SCD, 5.6%; RCD, 6.2%) and December (5.2-6.1%). Those born in the first and second quarter and first trimester were significantly more than those born in the fourth quarter (I/IV, p=0.0023; I/III, p=0.0074; II/IV, p=0.047) or trimester [I/II, p=0.09 (trend); I/III p=0.014; II/III, p=0.079 (trend)]. In another study at the same location (number of newborns n=286,963), significant correlation between monthly newborn number and month of the year was not found. possible environmental effects related to the different monthly birth distributions of the studied group are discussed.

CONCLUSIONS

Victims of SCD and RCD are unequally distributed according to month of birth. The highest numbers were found for January and March to May. The numbers are higher for the first and second quarter and first trimester in comparison with the months at the end of the year. The lowest numbers of study patients were born in November, December and October. This is in accord with the birth months of American centenarians (100-112 years old) found by colleagues from the University of Chicago. Possible mechanisms for predisposition to SCD and RCD need further elucidation. Our findings support the paradigm linking birth month and longevity.

Birth month and longevity - monthly birth distribution in acute coronary events provoked by atherothrombosis in patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

BACKGROUND

Human homeostasis is time related. Environmental physical factors also play a role. Recent studies published by the National Academy of Sciences (USA) describe human longevity links with the month of birth. The aim of this study was to check monthly birth distribution in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) related to atherothrombosis - one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the industrial world.

METHODS

A total of 4732 (3594 men) subjects were included in the study. Patients treated with PCI for AMI in the years 2000 to March 2010 were studied. The population registry specific to 1950 excluded 1024 patients, i.e., those registered as born on January 1 and they were replaced with patients with an average of births from January 2 to 31. A total of 3675 patients were finally studied (2839 men, 836 women).

RESULTS

The average monthly birth number was 306±60.38. Significant monthly differences in birth number (q2=21.077, p<0.03) were observed. A higher birth rate in the first four months of the year was revealed, with the exception of February. The number of births in these months exceeded the following two four-month data (q2=20.57, p<0.024). March births exceeded the monthly average by more than two standard deviations (SD) - 462, with an analogical increase for both genders. In May-December births were below average.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with AMI treated with PCI show differences in the month of birth with the majority being born in the first four months of the year and of those most were born in March. Possible implications on pathogenetic clues of atherothrombosis can be assumed.

Geographic and extraterrestrial aspects of morbidity and/or mortality patterns from myocardial infarction and stroke

Two authors (M.K. and M.M.) provided insight into a manuscript submitted by them elsewhere for publication and kindly offered for meta-analysis data on the monthly incidence from January 1989 up to December 2004, of 6094 cerebral infarctions, 414 intracerebral and 277 subarachnoid hemorrhages, cases admitted at the Neurological Clinic in Nové Zamky, Slovakia. Spectral components with a period exceeding (beyond = trans) the length of the calendar year--transyears--reported originally by M.K. and M.M. are here also documented linearly on original data without and after detrending by the fit of first- or second-order polynomials. For intracerebral and subarachnoidal hemorrhage, the zero-amplitude (no-rhythm) assumption is rejected (P < 0.05, not corrected for multiple testing) for the transyear but not for a precise 1.0-year trial period. As reported earlier by M.K. and M.M., the transyear's amplitude is larger than the calendar year's amplitude for all three series of stroke incidence in Slovakia. The putative importance of the new findings stems from earlier and new analyses revealing other spectral components that are presumed signatures of magnetoperiodisms, e.g. about 50- and 7-year components in about five decades of diagnostically unqualified, pooled data on stroke in Minnesota. There is, however, the danger of relatively small numbers providing artifacts for loosely defined transyears. The original cosinor approach by M.K. and M.M., testing anticipated periods, had its strength. The observation of a quindecadal component in mortality from strokes in Minnesota supports the presence of signatures of effects from extraterrestrial space in acute human pathology such as strokes, myocardial infarctions and sudden cardiac death. Magnetoperiodic mechanisms remain to be investigated further as added strokes accumulate in Nové Zamky and greater Slovakia as well as for sudden cardiac death where transyears have been documented in the Czech Republic, in Arkansas and particularly in Minnesota, but not elsewhere (as yet?). This study is also a plea for worldwide access to morbidity, mortality and natality data that constitute a largely unexploited treasure, brought to the fore mainly for relatively short-term comparisons of the effect of interventions against the fiction of imaginary baselines.
