Abstract
Nutrition risk is linked to hospitalization, frailty, depression, and death. Loneliness during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have heightened nutrition risk. We sought to determine prevalence of high nutrition risk and whether loneliness, mental health, and assistance with meal preparation/delivery were associated with risk in community-dwelling older adults (65+ years) after the first wave of COVID-19 in association analyses and when adjusting for meaningful covariates. Data were collected from 12 May 2020 to 19 August 2020. Descriptive statistics, association analyses, and linear regression analyses were conducted. For our total sample of 272 participants (78 ± 7.3 years old, 70% female), the median Seniors in the Community: Risk evaluation for Eating and Nutrition (SCREEN-8) score (nutrition risk) was 35 [1st quartile, 3rd quartile: 29, 40], and 64% were at high risk (SCREEN-8 < 38). Fifteen percent felt lonely two or more days a week. Loneliness and meal assistance were associated with high nutrition risk in association analyses. In multivariable analyses adjusting for other lifestyle factors, loneliness was negatively associated with SCREEN-8 scores (-2.92, 95% confidence interval [-5.51, -0.34]), as was smoking (-3.63, [-7.07, -0.19]). Higher SCREEN-8 scores were associated with higher education (2.71, [0.76, 4.66]), living with others (3.17, [1.35, 4.99]), higher self-reported health (0.11, [0.05, 0.16]), and resilience (1.28, [0.04, 2.52]). Loneliness, but not mental health and meal assistance, was associated with nutrition risk in older adults after the first wave of COVID-19. Future research should consider longitudinal associations among loneliness, resilience, and nutrition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Determine if nutrition risk, as measured by SCREEN-8 is predictive of 3-year strength and performance indicators among community-living older adults after adjusting for key demographic and health variables. Sex-stratified analyses were also determined. DESIGN Cohort study with baseline and 3-year follow-up data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). PARTICIPANTS Participants 55 years and older at baseline were included (n = 22,502); those who reported nasogastric or abdominal tube feeding at either timepoint were excluded (n = 26). The final sample of participants available for analyses slightly varied depending on completion of the three outcome variables. List-wise deletion was used for nutrition risk and covariates to arrive at the sample available for analysis (n = 17,250). MEASUREMENTS The valid and reliable SCREEN-8 tool was used to measure nutrition risk. The minimum and maximum score of SCREEN-8 is 0 and 48, respectively, with lower scores indicating greater nutrition risk. Baseline SCREEN-8 score was used in analyses. Grip strength, chair rise test time and gait speed assessed at the 3-year follow-up were the strength and performance outcomes. Criteria outlined by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 were used to determine low performance for grip strength (<27 kg for males and <16 kg for females), chair rise test time (>15 seconds) and gait speed (≤0.8 m/s). RESULTS Half of participants were female (49.4%) and mean age was 66.7 years (SD 7.9). Mean SCREEN-8 score was 39.2 (SD 6.0). Low grip strength, chair rise test performance and gait speed were found in 18.5%, 19.6% and 29.3% of participants, respectively. After adjusting for covariates (e.g., sex, age, education), SCREEN-8 score was significantly associated with grip strength (F = 11.21, p = .001; OR = 0.98, CI [0.97, 0.99]), chair rise time (F = 5.97, p = .015; OR = 0.99, CI [0.97, 0.997]), and gait speed (F = 9.99, p = .002; OR = 0.98, CI [0.97, 0.99]). Similar interpretation was seen in sex-stratified analyses, although chair rise time was not significant. Age, body mass index, Life Space Index Score and self-rated health were consistently associated with all outcome measures. CONCLUSION Nutrition risk, as measured by SCREEN-8, significantly predicted 3-year strength and performance measures. Greater nutrition risk is associated with an increased odds of low performance on grip strength, chair rise test, and gait speed. Future research should implement nutrition risk screening in primary care settings with subsequent assessment and treatment for at risk clients to determine if nutrition interventions implemented post screening can delay age-related losses in strength and performance.

Abstract
AimThe aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of and the gender differences in the use of professional home care in Germany.MethodsWe used harmonized data from three large cohort studies from Germany (“Healthy Aging: Gender-specific trajectories into the latest life”; AgeDifferent.de Platform). Data were available for 5,393 older individuals (75 years and older). Mean age was 80.2 years (SD: 4.1 years), 66.6% were female. Professional homecare outcome variables were use of outpatient nursing care, paid household assistance, and meals on wheels' services. Logistic regression models were used, adjusting for important sociodemographic variables.ResultsAltogether 5.2% of older individuals used outpatient nursing care (6.2% women and 3.2% men; p < 0.001), 24.2% used paid household assistance (26.1% women and 20.5% men; p < 0.001) and 4.4% used meals on wheels' services (4.5% women and 4.0% men; p = 0.49). Regression analysis revealed that women had higher odds of using paid household assistance than men (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: [1.24–1.76]; p < 0.001), whereas they had lower odds of using meals on wheels' services (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: [0.42–0.97]; p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences in using outpatient nursing care between women and men were found (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: [0.87–1.81]; p = 0.225). Further, the use of home care was mainly associated with health-related variables (e.g., stroke, Parkinson's disease) and walking impairments.ConclusionsOur study showed that gender differences exist in using paid household assistance and in culinary dependency. For example, meals on wheels' services are of great importance (e.g., for individuals living alone or for individuals with low social support). Gender differences were not identified regarding outpatient nursing care. Use of professional home care services may contribute to maintaining autonomy and independence in old age.

Abstract
Older people with excess body weight are not spared from undernutrition. They may face appetite decline which may lead to insufficient nutrient intake. They also have a higher risk of developing chronic diseases which may have a negative impact on protein-anabolic pathways. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of undernutrition in overweight and obese older people from a secondary analysis on data collected through two French surveys among people aged 65 or over (n = 782; 31% men; 65–103 years old). Undernutrition was assessed using the MNA screening tool (Mini-Nutritional Assessment). Results showed that 2% of the respondents with a BMI over 25 were undernourished (MNA score below 17/30) and 23% were at risk of undernutrition (MNA score of 17–23.5). Specifically, 18% of overweight and 29% of obese respondents were at risk of undernutrition. Taking into account the most recent French census data, it can be estimated that in France, around 1,7 million people aged over 65 with a BMI over 25 are undernourished or at risk of undernutrition. Given the worldwide increase in the number of overweight/obese individuals in the last few decades, further research will be needed to develop strategies to tackle nutritional risk in overweight/obese older adults.
