Abstract
OBJECTIVE This qualitative study aimed to explore the challenges faced by older adults regarding the postoperative symptom experience after major elective surgery. BACKGROUND Although extensively studied in oncology settings, the impact of postoperative symptom burden remains largely underexplored in elective major surgery among older adults. METHODS We employed convenience sampling to recruit adults aged 65 years or above undergoing major elective surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Semistructured interviews regarding the surgical experience were conducted at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. An inductive qualitative approach was used to identify emerging themes. Symptoms revealed by participants during interviews were also captured. RESULTS Nineteen participants completed a 1-month postoperative interview, and 17 additionally completed a 3-month interview. Three themes emerged: (1) postoperative symptoms significantly impacted valued life activities and psychosocial well-being, (2) participants felt "caught off guard" by the intensity and duration of postoperative symptoms, and (3) participants expressed the need for additional support, resources, and education on symptom management. The most frequently mentioned symptoms were postoperative pain (n=12, 63.1%), gastrointestinal discomfort (n=8, 42.1%), and anxiety/stress (n=8, 42.1%) at 1-month postsurgery compared with pain and depression (both n=6, 35.3%) at 3 months. CONCLUSIONS Study participants were surprised by the negative impact of postoperative symptoms on their psychosocial well-being and ability to engage in valued life activities. Symptom burden is an important patient-reported outcome that should be assessed postoperatively. Interventions to minimize postoperative symptom burden in older adults could optimize quality of life and participation in meaningful activities during surgical recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In addition to pharmacological prevention, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) can be mitigated through patient education; written supporting materials can be beneficial. METHODS This is a randomized, controlled trial which randomly assigned patients undergoing first chemotherapy cycle to receive oral information regarding CINV prevention and management (control arm) or oral information plus an informative booklet (experimental arm). Overall, 384 cancer patients fulfilling the following inclusion criteria were enrolled: age ≥18 years; life expectancy ≥6 months; no cognitive impairment; written informed consent. After the first cycle, CINV occurrence and its impact on daily activities were assessed using the Functional Living Index Emesis (FLIE). RESULTS Severe nausea was self-reported by 3.0% and 10.8% of patients in the experimental and control group, respectively (difference: 7.8%; 95% confidence interval: 2.3% to 13.1%). Moderate/high impact of nausea on daily activities was lower in patients also receiving the booklet than in the control group (4.2% and 10.1%, respectively; difference: 5.9%; 95% confidence interval: 0.3% to 11.5%). Vomiting was not statistically different between study arms. CONCLUSIONS This integrated nursing approach was effective in aiding cancer patients in CINV self-management. Although the beneficial effect was moderate, this intervention demands minimal resources in terms of costs and time.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The modern era has observed vast technological advancements with a definite impact on the health sector. There has been an upsurge in mobile applications (mApps) used for varied purposes. Many mApps are available that target different arenas in dentistry including a range of oral health issues, the most important being oral cancer. These mApps with specific algorithms have been used for risk assessment, screening and diagnosis of oral potentially malignant and malignant disorders. Other benefits include remote consultation, timely referral, treatment of the disease, self monitoring and adherence to medications. Therefore, this review is designed to appraise the utility of mobile apps in oral cancer. The systematic research of the literature was done to find relevant articles regarding the development and applications of mApps in oral cancer by using specific research engines. PubMed, Cochrane and Clinical Key databases were searched electronically, irrespective of date of publication, with an assortment of several independent terms. A total of 423 articles were accessed, and screened. After applying the definite inclusion and exclusion criteria, 9 articles were finally selected which highlighted the impact of mApps in oral cancer. It was concluded that the potential of mobile applications could be harnessed judiciously to improve the screening, diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Question prompt lists (QPLs) are lists of questions that patients may want to discuss with clinicians. QPLs support person-centred care and have been associated with many beneficial outcomes including improved patient question-asking, and the amount and quality of the information provided by clinicians. The purpose of this study was to review published research on QPLs to explore how QPL design and implementation can be optimized. METHODS We performed a scoping review by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Joanna Briggs Database from inception to 8 May 2022, for English language studies of any design that evaluated QPLs. We used summary statistics and text to report study characteristics, and QPL design and implementation. RESULTS We included 57 studies published from 1988 to 2022 by authors in 12 countries on a range of clinical topics. Of those, 56% provided the QPL, but few described how QPLs were developed. The number of questions varied widely (range 9-191). Most QPLs were single-page handouts (44%) but others ranged from 2 to 33 pages. Most studies implemented a QPL alone with no other accompanying strategy; most often in a print format before consultations by mail (18%) or in the waiting room (66%). Both patients and clinicians identified numerous benefits to patients of QPLs (e.g., increased patient confidence to ask questions, and patient satisfaction with communication or care received; and reduced anxiety about health status or treatment). To support use, patients desired access to QPLs in advance of clinician visits, and clinicians desired information/training on how to use the QPL and answer questions. Most (88%) studies reported at least one beneficial impact of QPLs. This was true even for single-page QPLs with few questions unaccompanied by other implementation strategies. Despite favourable views of QPLs, few studies assessed outcomes amongst clinicians. CONCLUSION This review identified QPL characteristics and implementation strategies that may be associated with beneficial outcomes. Future research should confirm these findings via systematic review and explore the benefits of QPLs from the clinician's perspective. PATIENT/PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Following this review, we used the findings to develop a QPL on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and interviewed women and clinicians about QPL design including content, format, enablers and barriers of use, and potential outcomes including beneficial impacts and possible harms (will be published elsewhere).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The population of individuals affected by breast cancer is growing, and with advances in cancer treatment implemented into usual care, there is an urgent need to improve the recognition, monitoring and treatment of therapy-induced adverse effects. This study aims to explore the use of an in-app electronic questionnaire to assess and monitor chemotherapy-related symptoms in early breast cancer patients treated with perioperative chemotherapy. METHOD Between December 2019 and June 2021, 72 female study participants used the mobile app Centrum Chorób Piersi UCK and completed an in-app questionnaire about the 14 most common chemotherapy-related symptoms. Replies including symptoms with a critical value triggered automatic email alerts to the nursing team. RESULTS Acceptance of the study was higher among younger women and patients originating from rural areas, while possible digital exclusion among patients >60 years was observed during the enrolment process. A total of 55 participants completed the electronic questionnaire at least once and generated 553 responses with 1808 specific problems reported. Fatigue (n = 428) was the most common problem, and fever (n = 5) the least reported problem. A total of 21 participants triggered alerts with responses containing symptoms with critical value assessment (n = 89). Significant negative correlation was observed between the number of responses and time from the first chemotherapy administration; however, the number of responses was not determined by any sociodemographic or medical factors. Significant positive correlations were identified between the number of communicated problems and participants' age. The usage of our electronic symptom assessment questionnaire decreased substantially after the period of active encouragement during the study enrolment. CONCLUSIONS Not all societies are ready for innovative eHealth solutions. Patients' age should be carefully considered when app-based interventions are introduced to usual cancer care. Additional support is suggested for older patients to improve their awareness and participation in eHealth interventions. More research involving older participants is needed to explore and address their particular needs and perspectives on eHealth solutions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high levels of unmet needs in relation to provision of self-care information reported by women living with breast cancer suggests that pre-chemotherapy education is suboptimal. Chatbots are emerging as a promising platform to provide education to patients helping them self-manage their symptoms at home. However, evidence from empirical studies on the effect of chatbots education on women living with breast cancer self-care behaviors and symptoms management are scarce. METHODS This three-arm randomized controlled trial was performed in a chemotherapy day care center within an oncology center in Egypt. A total of 150 women living with breast cancer were randomly selected and randomized into three groups: the ChemoFreeBot group (n = 50), the nurse-led education group (n = 50), and the routine care group (n = 50). In the ChemoFreeBot group, women were given a link to interact with ChemoFreeBot and ask questions about their symptoms and self-care interventions by typing questions or keywords at any time. On the same day as their first day of chemotherapy, the nurse-led education group received face to face teaching sessions from the researcher (nurse) about side effects and self-care interventions. The routine care group received general knowledge during their chemotherapy session about self-care interventions. The self-care behaviors effectiveness and the frequency, severity and distress of chemotherapy side effects were measured at baseline and postintervention for the three groups. The ChemoFreeBot's usability was assessed. RESULTS The mixed design repeated measures ANOVA analyses revealed a statistically significant both group effect and interaction effect of group*time, indicating a significant difference between the three groups in terms of the physical symptoms frequency (F = 76.075, p < .001, F = 147, p < .001, respectively), severity (F = 96.440, p < .001, F = 220.462, p < .001), and distress (F = 77.171, p < .001, F = 189.680, p < .001); the psychological symptoms frequency (F = 63.198, p < .001, F = 137.908, p < .001), severity (F = 62.137, p < .001), (F = 136.740, p < .001), and distress (F = 43.003, p < .001, F = 168.057, p < .001), and the effectiveness of self-care behaviors (F = 20.134, p < .001, F = 24.252, p < .001, respectively). The Post hoc analysis with Bonferroni adjustment in showed that women in the ChemoFreeBot group experienced a statistically significant less frequent, less severe and less distressing physical and psychological symptoms and higher effective self-care behaviors than those in the nurse-led education and routine care groups (p > .001). CONCLUSION ChemoFreeBot was a useful and cost-effective tool to improve increase self-care behavior and reduce chemotherapy side effects in women living with breast cancer through the provision of personalized education and the improvement of the accessibility to real-time and high-quality information compared to "one size fits all" approach used by nurses to provide the information. ChemoFreeBot can be an empowering tool to assist nurses to educate women with breast cancer and allow women to take an active role in managing their symptom. Abstract
Care in oncology requires both technical and psychosocial skills by nursing staff, so continuous learning is necessary. Evidence suggests there are some educational gaps in oncology nursing staff, and continuing educational interventions have been effective in overcoming these deficiencies. Aim: to determine the basic educational lines that a continuous training program should have for oncology nurses. A bibliographic review study was carried out in two phases from October 2020 to January 2021. In a first phase, the main databases were analyzed: PubMed, Web of Science, Dialnet and Medline, following the PRISMA methodology; and subsequently, an analysis of the most important thematic nuclei that a training program in cancer nursing should contain. The DAFO matrix and the Hanlon prioritization method were used. Four competencies that every oncology nurse should have were described: communication, coping, self-direction of learning and technical health. The thematic contents that a training program should contain were then determined, and aspects such as stress prevention and burnout, adequate communication with patient and family, and continuous educational and technical skills were considered. The results found suggest that there are deficiencies in the education of nursing staff. Continuing education programs are effective in supplementing them. They should develop the four skills described in the results section.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the effects of pre-chemotherapy education with audio visual methods on the self-efficacy of symptom management in patients with cancer who received chemotherapy. The various side effects of chemotherapy could affect the self-efficacy of symptom management. Providing pre-chemotherapy education is important to improve the self-efficacy of symptom management. Nowadays, pre-chemotherapy education is only given by using print media, which can restrict transferring information to patients with cancer. This study was based on pre- and post-test, 2 group, quasi-experimental design. A total of 80 respondents were recruited with consecutive sampling between January and March 2019. Participants in the intervention group received video pre-chemotherapy education, while participants in the control group received education with a booklet (usual care). Patients completed self-efficacy symptom management questionnaires before and 1-2 weeks after chemotherapy. The analysis used the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests and by counting Cohen's d effect size. The mean scores of pre- and post-test self-efficacy of symptom management increased in the intervention group to 1.77 (p = 0.000) and in the control group to 0.64 (p = 0.001). The comparative test between the two groups showed p = 0.005 (p < 0.05) with an effect size of 0.4 (66%). This result indicates that pre-chemotherapy education had medium effect on the self-efficacy of symptom management. Pre-chemotherapy education with audio visual methods can increase the self-efficacy of symptom management in patients with cancer.

Abstract
The authors of this study examined the effect of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory (OSCDT) based education and telephone follow-ups on the self-care agency, anxiety, loneliness, and well-being of patients with colorectal cancer chemotherapy. In this study, data of 47 patients with colorectal cancer (randomly assigned into the intervention or control group) were collected between April 2016 and March 2017 from a university hospital's daytime chemotherapy unit in Turkey. Before chemotherapy, the intervention group was given individualized education based on the OSCDT and an educational booklet. After chemotherapy treatments, these patients received a telephone follow-up call. The control group received only routine nursing care. The self-care agency and general well-being, and its sub-dimensions, of the intervention group increased, and its state-trait anxiety and loneliness levels decreased, when compared with the control group. Nurses must play a more active role in education and follow-ups, and telephone follow-ups should be included in nursing care in chemotherapy units.

Abstract
Self-care education can direct patients to manage their side effects during treatment, reduce psychological distress, and improve self-care information. In this study, the effectiveness of the Self-Care Education Intervention Program (SCEIP) on patient activation levels, psychological distress, and treatment-related concerns in women with breast cancer was assessed by adopting a longitudinal quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design. The data for 246 women with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy were collected. Pre- and post-interventional assessments were conducted at baseline (T1) and the second (T2), fourth (T3), and sixth (T4) cycles using the 13-item Patient Activation Measure, 14-item Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and 25-item Cancer Treatment Survey. It was found that the SCEIP significantly improved the activation level (p ≤ 0.001), psychological distress (anxiety level (p ≤ 0.001), the depression level (p ≤ 0.001)), and treatment-related concerns (sensory/psychological concerns (p = 0.05); procedural concerns (p ≤ 0.001)). Therefore, the SCEIP could potentially improve patients’ activation level, psychological distress, and treatment-related concerns regarding symptom management during chemotherapy, specifically for Malaysian women with breast cancer.

Abstract
Background Patient education and follow-up can be accomplished without time or space constraints via tele-nursing. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of education and follow-up provided via tele-nursing on the quality of life of individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. Method This semi-experimental study used a pretest-posttest design in a single group. It was conducted between April 1, 2021, and October 1, 2021, with 63 patients who presented to a state hospital. The Patient Information Form and the Duke Health Profile were administered to the patients prior to the education. Then, the patients completed the COVID-19 education program. Next, follow-up and counseling occurred via tele-nursing every other day for 14 days. At the end of the 14th day, the Duke Health Profile was once again administered to the patients. Results The patients had decreased physical, mental, and social health scores after the intervention. In addition, their pain, anxiety, and depression scores decreased. Abstract
Background Cancer is a frightening disease. Therefore, the care of cancer patients is very complex. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the education based on Orem’s self-care model on self-care abilities of the patients undergoing chemotherapy in Shafa Hospital in Ahvaz city, Iran. Methods This randomized clinical trial was carried out in 2018 on 100 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, who referred to Shafa Hospital in Ahvaz city, Iran. The sampling method was simple and the subjects were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups (50 in the experimental and 50 in the control group). The study outcome was the self-care ability of the patients measured before and 2 months after the intervention by the control and experimental groups. The educational intervention consisted of five 60-minute sessions (one session per week) held as educational and counseling ones through group, face-to-face and individual training based on the identified needs of the patients in the experimental group at Shafa Hospital Chemotherapy Department. To collect data, two questionnaires [the assess and identify the conceptual pattern of Orem questionnaire and the Self-care capacity assessment (ESCI)]were used. Statistical data were entered into SPSS software version 20 and analyzed by chi-square, independent t-test and paired t-test. Results The mean and standard deviation of age was 35.06 ± 14.51 in the control group and 31.72 ± 15.01 in the experimental group. The results of the independent t-test showed that before the educational intervention, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean self-care (P = 0.38). But after the intervention, a significant difference was found between the mean self-care scores of the experimental and control groups (P = 0.001). Conclusion Application of Orem’s self-care model led to increased self-care ability of the cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Therefore, it is recommended that this model be included in the routine programs of chemotherapy departments. Trial registration IRCT registration number: IRCT20160418027449N6. Abstract
Chemotherapy is a commonly used cancer treatment. However, it causes physical side effects and psychological side effects such as distress. Providing prechemotherapy education using audiovisual methods can reduce distress, but not all research about the use of educational videos have the same conclusions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of prechemotherapy education using audio visual methods on distress of patients with cancer. This study was a quasi-experiment using pre-test and posttest design with a control group. Eighty-two cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy for the first time were divided into 2 groups with forty-one patients in the control group and forty-one patients in the intervention group. Patients in the control group received education with a booklet (usual care), while the intervention group received prechemotherapy education using audio visual materials. Patients completed a distress thermometer before and 1-2 weeks after chemotherapy. The analysis used the Wilcoxon test in each group before and 1-2 weeks after prechemotherapy education. The Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine the difference in distress scores between the two groups. Statistical significance was defined as p value < 0.05. The effect of prechemotherapy education in each group was in the control group (p = 0.004) and the intervention group (p = 0.000). The control group had a mean decrease of 1.69 points, and the intervention group had a mean decrease of 1.29 points. There was a significant difference of distress between control group and intervention group with a p value of 0.037. The conclusion is the prechemotherapy education using audio visual method can reduce distress in patients with cancer in addition to the usual method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The education given in cancer process will contribute to better cope with the problems that may be experienced and to improve self-management skills, thus to the improvement in the quality of life. AIM/OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the effect of video-assisted education on the quality of life of women with breast cancer who received chemotherapy treatment for the first time. DESIGN The control group pre-test/post-test study design was used. METHODS The study was conducted with women who applied to Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit of a university hospital in Turkey between September 2016 and March 2017 and who received chemotherapy for the first time. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaires namely EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23 were used to obtain the data. RESULTS In the education group patients in the fourth cycle of chemotherapy; a decrease in general well-being and a significant increase in dyspnoea, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite were observed. In control group patients in the fourth cycle of chemotherapy, a decrease in general well-being, physical and role functions and a significant increase in nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Breast symptoms and arm symptoms in the educational group patients decreased from the 1st to the 4th cycle. CONCLUSIONS It has been determined that the application of visual material in patients with breast cancer in the education and counselling process is effective in improving the quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a major concern of patients with cancer, leading to suboptimal treatment. AIM This study assessed the emetic risk associated with intravenous and oral chemotherapy and the prophylactic antiemetic drugs by cancer type in a real-world setting. METHODS AND RESULTS We used the health services utilisation data for patients with cancer diagnosed in 2016. Patients aged at least 20 years at the time of diagnosis and who started their first course of chemotherapy were included. The emetic risk of chemotherapy was determined according to the cancer type and was classified based on clinical practice guidelines. The prescription of antiemetic drugs was assessed. Overall, 172 133 patients were evaluated, of whom 121 103 (70.4%) received intravenous chemotherapy. High-emetic-risk chemotherapy (HEC) was prescribed in 46 458 (27.0%) patients. HEC was prescribed most for patients with oesophageal cancer (80.3%), followed by malignant lymphoma (60.2%) and breast cancer (53.8%). Moderate-emetic-risk chemotherapy (MEC) was prescribed in 60 528 (35.2%) patients and was mostly prescribed for small cell lung cancer (59.9%). Meanwhile, more than 50% of the chemotherapy prescribed for patients with gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer was low-emetic-risk chemotherapy. HEC was accompanied by three-drug antiemetic prophylaxis in more than 90% of patients with small cell lung, non-small cell lung, breast, and oesophageal cancer, whereas only 13.5% of patients with malignant lymphoma were administered CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine sulphate, and prednisolone) with prophylaxis. CONCLUSION The risk of CINV differs with cancer type. HEC was less prescribed compared with MEC. Most patients received the recommended anti-emetic prophylaxis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Whilst much research has addressed patients' expectations and experiences of cancer treatment, little research has explored the association between these factors. The current qualitative study aimed to explore patients' beliefs about the relationship between their expectations of cancer treatment and their subsequent experiences. DESIGN Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with sixteen individuals who had received cancer treatment. RESULTS Data were analysed using thematic analysis and illustrated that cancer treatment was experienced as a challenge that could be understood in terms of two themes: 'investing in treatment' reflecting trust in treatment and health care professionals and a sense that treatment was a necessary evil and 'encountering tensions or disconnects' illustrating the mismatch between expectations and experiences with patient reporting feeling unprepared, pleasantly surprised or shock. Transcending these themes was the notion of 'searching for stability and certainty' in terms of a desire for normality and a shift in focus between treatment process and outcome. Overall, disconnects were apparent between participants' expectations and experiences. However, due to their trust in treatment, participants were able to shift their focus between the treatment itself and future outcomes, to regain a sense of certainty. CONCLUSION Patients describe a complex relationship between expectations and experiences and are able to shift their focus between process and outcome to cope with the challenges they face.

Abstract
CONTEXT Advance care planning is essential to enable informed medical decisions to be made and to reduce aggressiveness in end-of-life (EOL) care. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore whether a question prompt list (QPL) adapted to French language and culture could promote discussions, particularly on prognosis and EOL issues, among advanced cancer patients attending outpatient palliative care (PC) consultations. METHODS In this multicenter randomized study, patients assigned to the intervention arm received a QPL to help them prepare for the next consultation one month later. The main inclusion criteria were advanced cancer patients referred to the PC team with an estimated life expectancy of less than one year. The primary endpoint was the number of questions raised, globally and by topic. The secondary objectives were the impact of the QPL on psychological symptoms, quality of life, satisfaction with care, and coping styles at two months. RESULTS Patients (n = 71) in the QPL arm asked more questions (mean 21.8 vs. 18.2, P = 0.03) than patients in the control arm (n = 71), particularly on PC (5.6 vs. 3.7, P = 0.012) and EOL issues (2.2 vs. 1, P = 0.018) but not on prognosis (4.3 vs. 3.6, not specified). At two months, there was no change in anxiety, depression, or quality of life in either arm; patient satisfaction with doctors' technical skills was scored higher (P = 0.024), and avoidance coping responses were less frequent (self-distraction, P = 0.015; behavioral disengagement, P = 0.025) in the QPL arm. CONCLUSION Questions on PC and EOL issues in outpatient PC consultations were more frequent, and patient satisfaction was better when a QPL was made available before the consultation.

Abstract
Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a disease of the hematopoietic system and chemotherapy is recommended as the primary treatment. As many chemotherapeutic agents have severe adverse effects, patients require to be supported by their family to deal with chemotherapy-related symptoms. This study attempted to investigate the effect of family-centered supportive programs on chemotherapy symptom control in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Materials and Methods: Sixty-six patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia undergoing chemotherapy along with their caregivers participated in this nonrandomized clinical trial. Patients in Shariati and Taleghani Hospital were assigned to intervention (n=33) and control group (n=33), respectively. A survey of family-centered supportive program was conducted via in-person and telephone up to 6 cycles of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy symptom assessment scale was administered to record the data during 6 cycles of chemotherapy treatment. The control group only received routine interventions. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: The results of the study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in terms of the frequency of 9 chemotherapy-induced symptoms including nausea, shortness of breath, problems related to skin and nails, a sore/sensitive mouth or throat, anorexia, weight gain or loss, headache and sore/scratchy/dry eyes between the control and intervention group. There was also a statistically significant difference in the severity and level of discomfort of 19 chemotherapy-induced symptoms between the control and intervention group. Conclusion: Family-centered supportive program can be considered as an approach to decrease the frequency, severity and discomfort level of chemotherapy-induced symptoms.

Abstract
PURPOSE The oncology workforce has been found to have high risk of burnout; however, limited research has explored the experiences of health professionals working with head and neck cancer patients. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of health professionals who work directly with patients diagnosed with head and neck cancers, with a focus on work-life balance, mental health and wellbeing. METHOD A total of 21 in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with health professionals including radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, nurses, and associated medical and allied health professionals. A qualitative research approach based on social constructionist theory was used. Thematic analysis was used to identify and code themes. RESULTS Five main themes emerged: 1. Conscientiousness; 2. Empathy; 3. Challenges; 4. Coping; and 5. Burnout or Fade Away. Challenges included sub-themes of Time & Resource Constraints, Work-Life Imbalance, Patients with Complex Needs, and Lack of Self-Care. CONCLUSION It is vital to the sustainability of head and neck oncology services that this highly skilled workforce is retained. The development of interventions that will reduce the risk of burnout and improve retention and capacity of health professionals may include advanced communication skills training, trauma sensitivity training, self-compassion and stress management skills.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims at exploring the effectiveness of nurse-led advanced practice for patients with cancer. METHODS This review followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. Randomised controlled trials on cancer nurse-led clinics for patient outcomes, costs, service utilisation and other outcomes were included. Databases such as MEDLINE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, EMBASE and PsychINFO were searched based on MeSH terms. Thematic analysis was used to synthesise results of the included studies. RESULTS Seventeen articles were included, published between 2001 and 2019. There were methodological shortcomings with a number of the studies reviewed. Five themes were identified including (1) rationale for developing nurse-led clinics, (2) mode of delivery of nurse-led clinics, (3) the content of nurse-led clinics, (4) exploring patient outcomes and (5) satisfaction with nurse-led clinics. CONCLUSIONS The results support the effectiveness of nurse-led clinics in improving self-reported responses such as distress levels, satisfaction, quality of life, depressive symptoms, concerns and vomiting among cancer patients. Following a sound protocol for both the study and the reporting is recommended, and future studies should focus more on costs and effectiveness of different models of care administered by advanced practice nurses. Effectiveness of nurse-led clinics needs further evaluation with stronger trials and wider focus on nursing-sensitive clinical outcomes and costs.

Abstract
Cancer patients are often not sufficiently oriented to manage side effects at home. Sending text messages with self-care guidelines aimed managing side effects is the main objective of this randomized controlled trial. Patients who started outpatient chemotherapy treatment between March and December 2017 at a hospital in southern Brazil were invited to participate in this study and were allocated to the intervention or control group (ratio 1: 1). Each patient in the intervention group received a daily SMS (short message service) with some guidance on management or prevention of side effects. All text messages were sent to the intervention group patients in an automated and tailored way by our app called cHEmotHErApp. Side effects experienced by patients were verified using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30). Results showed intervention group patients experienced fewer side effects compared to the control group in cycle 1 (p < 0.05), in general. In addition, intervention group experienced less nausea in relation to the control group, in the cycle 1 and cycle 2 (p < 0.05). This study indicate text messaging may be a tool for supporting side effect management in patients receiving chemotherapy. This study was enrolled in ClinicalTrials.gov with the identification number NCT03087422. This research was performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki.

Abstract
Purpose Radiation therapy simulation is an excellent time for patient education. We implemented a comprehensive personalized patient experience-focused (PX) teaching session at the time of simulation and assessed its effect using patient satisfaction scores. Methods and Materials From February 2016 to June 2018, a single PX-trained radiation therapy therapist met patients at simulation to address and resolve all treatment-related questions. Results from a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved voluntary patient satisfaction tool were used to assess the effect of this intervention, using tools the patients received during the on-treatment period. Scores from patients contacted by the PX therapist were compared with those of noncontacted patients. Results For the survey, 1369 patients were contacted (median contact duration, 23 minutes; range, 0-117). Of 732 surveys submitted during this time, 98 were from on-treatment patients (69 contacted, 29 not contacted). The majority of contacted patients and survey responders were women (64% and 62%, respectively), patients with breast cancer (38%, 41%), and patients who had received curative therapy (82%, 69%). Scores from contacted patients were significantly higher for 10 of the 17 questions (registration helpfulness, P = .03; registration wait time, P = .048; facility way finding, P = .03; facility cleanliness, P = .01; treatment staff skill, P = .03; treatment staff concern for questions, P = .003; response to concerns, P = .01; staff worked together, P = .01; overall rating of care, P = .01; and likelihood of recommending care, P = .04) and 4 of the 5 domains (registration, P = .04; facility, P = .03; personal issues, P = .02; overall assessment, P = .002). Conclusions Contact by a PX therapist was associated with higher patient satisfaction scores, including areas specifically addressed by the PX teaching session (concerns for questions, response to concerns) as well as other areas (cleanliness, registration wait time).

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was undertaken to determine the effects of individualized education with support intervention on breast cancer patients' anxiety and depression while undergoing radiation therapy (RT). Moreover, the intervention was assessed for its feasibility in the context of Pakistan. METHODS A quasi-experimental design was used to conduct this study in RT department of a public hospital in Karachi. A total of 61 breast cancer patients receiving radiation as adjuvant therapy participated in the study. The experimental group (n = 31) received individualized education with support in the form of face-to-face sessions and information booklet prior to the commencement of RT. In addition, the nurse remained available for the consultation during the RT sessions and on telephone throughout the RT period. However, the control group received only information booklet. Patients' anxiety and depression were measured in both of the groups before the commencement of RT, and at the completion of RT by using the Aga Khan University Anxiety and Depression Scale (AKUADS). RESULTS A significant reduction was found in the overall mean anxiety and depression scores of the experimental group (p = 0.000) from pre-test to post-test. The overall mean anxiety and depression scores of the control group showed no significant difference (p = 0.187). The effect size of the intervention was large (Cohen's d = 2.5). CONCLUSION The intervention was effective in reducing anxiety and depression among breast cancer patients receiving RT. Replication of the study on a larger scale in multiple settings on other cancer patients is recommended.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect on nausea and vomiting of structured education given to male lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. This quasi-experimental research study had pre- and post-tests control groups. The estimated sample size was at least 20 subjects per group. Data were collected in the chest diseases clinic and outpatient chemotherapy unit of a university hospital in Turkey. An education booklet and structured education were given 30 mins for each patient before chemotherapy. In post-test 1, nausea severity was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (mean difference - 2.50, 95% CI - 1.46 to - 0.17, d = 0.82, p = 0.05). This was also the case in post-test 2 (mean difference - 2.10, 95% CI - 1.50 to - 0.21, d = 0.85, p = 0.01). According to this, the sizes of Cohen's d effect were large (0.82 and 0.85 for post-test 1 and post-test 2 respectively). However, vomiting frequency did not differ significantly between the experimental group and the control group in either post-test 1 or post-test 2 (p > 0.05). Structured education given by nurses had a positive effect on the severity of nausea. Nurses may be able to raise nausea management in cancer patients to a better level by education intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intervention with a mobile Health (mHealth) app can improve the efficacy of early detection of oral cancer and the outcomes for patients taking oral anticancer medications. The quality of life of oral cancer patients is significantly reduced within three months after surgery; also, their needs for nursing care and health information increase, mainly due to side effects and associated psychological problems. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate changes in the care needs and quality of life of patients with oral cancer after receiving the intervention of a newly developed mHealth app. METHODS After surgery, oral cancer patients were divided into an experimental group (n=50) who received the mHealth app intervention and a control group (n=50) who received routine health care and instruction. After 3 months of intervention, survey questionnaires were used to assess the patients' quality of life, nursing care needs, and acceptance of the mHealth app. RESULTS The physiological care needs were significantly decreased in the experimental group compared with the control group (P<.05). Although the differences were not statistically significant, the psychological needs, communication needs, and care support needs all improved after the mHealth app intervention. The overall improvement in quality of life was higher in the experimental group than in the control group (-7.24 vs -4.36). In terms of intention to use, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use, the acceptability scores of the mHealth app were significantly increased after 3 months of intervention (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS Compared with routine health care and instruction, for patients after surgery, the education/information intervention using the mHealth app significantly reduced their nursing care needs, improved their quality of life, and increased their acceptance of using an mHealth app on a mobile device. These findings can provide a theoretical basis for future health care app design and improvement. This study suggests that an mHealth app should be incorporated into the routine care of oral cancer patients to provide medical information quickly and improve their self-management abilities, thereby reducing the patients' need for physiological care and improving their quality of life. Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of a single group session based on art therapy (AT) for adult cancer patients to reduce anxiety and distress before anticancer treatment. Methods: A non-randomized pre-post study design was adopted. Sixty-two patients took part in one of twenty-seven "one-off" sessions held over a four-month period. Sixty-six patients, who simply received routine medical treatment, served as the control group (CG). Results: The intervention was appropriate to patients' needs and feasible in the context of their routine medical care. In contrast to the CG, the intervention group(IG) participants demonstrated a decrease in symptoms of anxiety, drowsiness and tiredness. Conclusions: The intervention proved suitable to the medical routine of patients' care. The clinical implications of the AT protocol and future research aimed at testing it vs. a different type of psychosocial intervention in a randomized controlled study are discussed.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to verify the effectiveness of telenursing in the control of nausea and vomiting induced by antineoplastic chemotherapy. Method: a randomized controlled trial of 61 cancer patients undergoing outpatient chemotherapy treatment, randomized into experimental group and control group. Nausea and vomiting were evaluated by the instrument Multinational Association on Supportive Care in Cancer. The telephone intervention was performed four times after chemotherapy. To verify the effects of this on the variables, the Mann-Whitney test and Student's t-test were used. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was applied to confirm the hypothesis of differences in the pre- and post-test intragroup scores. Results: the groups were homogeneous regarding sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The experimental group showed a statistically significant reduction in the occurrence of nausea (p=0.0089), in the degree of nausea, in two moments, between 24 hours and three days, and three days and five days (p=0.007 and p=0.009, respectively), in the occurrence of vomiting (p=0.008) and in the number of vomiting episodes (p=0.020). Conclusion: telephone intervention is a potential nursing intervention to reduce nausea and vomiting associated with antineoplastic chemotherapy. Brazilian Clinical Trial Registry: RBR-6s8qm5.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prechemotherapy information is overwhelming, and retention of critical information can be challenging. Patients from a Southern California infusion clinic had varying degrees of retention when nurses used traditional one-on-one teaching with supplemental handouts. OBJECTIVES The intent of this article is to determine the effectiveness of standardized, digitally recorded education as an alternative teaching method for increasing knowledge recall and decreasing anxiety in English- and Spanish-speaking patients receiving first-time chemotherapy. METHODS Baseline data were obtained from five patients who received traditional teaching. Using a pre-/post-test design, 92 patients receiving digitally recorded education completed a paper-and-pencil instrument that rated their anxiety and knowledge recall. FINDINGS The digitally recorded education method produced significant decreases in anxiety and increases in knowledge recall.

Abstract
Background Given the great symptom burden associated with chemotherapy on the one hand and generally poor self-management of symptoms by cancer patients on the other hand, our aim was to develop a nursing intervention to reduce symptom burden in adult cancer patients treated with chemotherapy and to support them in dealing with their various symptoms at home. Methods Development of the intervention was guided by the Intervention Mapping Approach and included following steps: needs assessment, formulation of proximal programme objectives, selection of methods and strategies, production of programme components, and planning for implementation and evaluation of the intervention. A panel of multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (n = 12) and a panel of patients and family caregivers (n = 7) were actively involved developing the intervention at each stage. Results For the intervention, four patient performance objectives relating to self-management were advanced. Self-efficacy and outcome expectations were selected as key determinants of dealing with chemotherapy-related symptoms. As methods for supporting patients, motivational interviewing and tailoring were found to fit best with the change objectives and determinants. Existing patient information materials were re-designed after panel input to reinforce the new intervention approach. Conclusion The intervention mapping approach, including active involvement of the intervention providers and receivers, informed the design of this nursing intervention with two or more contacts. Further evaluation is needed to gain insight into the potential effects, feasibility and mechanisms of this complex intervention. Abstract
Background The aims of this study were to determine whether a radiation therapist-led patient education intervention (RT Prepare) reduced breasts cancer patients’ psychological distress (primary endpoint); anxiety, depression and concerns about radiotherapy, and increased knowledge of radiotherapy and preparedness (secondary endpoints). Patient health system usage and costs were also assessed. Methods A multiple-baseline study across three sites. The RT Prepare intervention comprised two consultations with a radiation therapist: prior to treatment planning and on the first day of treatment. Radiation therapists focused on providing sensory and procedural information and addressing patients’ pre-treatment anxiety. Usual care data were collected prior to intervention commencement. Data collection occurred: after meeting their radiation oncologist, prior to treatment planning, first day of treatment and after treatment completion. Multilevel mixed effects regression models were used. Results In total, 218 usual care and 190 intervention patients participated. Compared with usual care, intervention participants reported lower psychological distress at treatment commencement (p = 0.01); lower concerns about radiotherapy (p < 0.01); higher patient knowledge (p < 0.001); higher preparedness for procedural concerns (p < 0.001) and higher preparedness for sensory-psychological concerns at treatment planning (p < 0.001). Mean within-trial costs per patient were estimated at $AU159 (US$120); mean ongoing costs at $AU35 (US$26). Conclusion The RT Prepare intervention was effective in reducing breast cancer patients’ psychological distress and preparing patients for treatment. This intervention provides an opportunity for radiation therapists to extend their role into providing patients with information and support prior to treatment to reduce psychological distress.

Abstract
Objective: This study is carried out to determine the symptoms and information necessity on chemotherapy (CT) treatment of the women with breast cancer. Methods: A total of 170 women older than 18 years old, who receive CT with breast cancer diagnosis, are volunteered to participate in the study. Mixed method was used in the study. Data are collected using Descriptive Data Form, Interview Form and Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale. Results: As a result of the cluster analysis, four clusters and the symptoms within have been obtained. These are: pain, lack of energy, feeling drowsy, sweat, swelling of hands, and feet in the first cluster; feeling nervous, difficulty sleeping, feeling sad, worrying in the second cluster; nausea, feeling bloating, change in the way food tastes, hair loss, constipation in the third cluster; vomiting, diarrhea, problems with sexual interest, lack of appetite, dizziness, and weight loss in the forth cluster. Women's information necessity related to the CT are follows: the effects of CT, other treatment options beyond CT, complementary methods, the effect of the CT treatment on reproductive health and sexuality, nutrition, and symptom control. Conclusions: The results of this study will enable determination of symptom clusters, which health professionals are easier to focus on these symptoms. An understanding information need of patients can help to ensure that individual's coping strategies and self-management.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to explore the experiences and side-effects of breast cancer patients on chemotherapy in Malaysia. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS Purposive sampling of 36 breast cancer patients who have completed chemotherapy and agreed to participate in semi-structured in-depth interviews. A constant comparative method and thematic analysis were used to analyze the interviews. RESULTS Data were categorized into six main themes: know nothing of chemotherapy; fear of chemotherapy; patients' beliefs in alternative treatments; symptom management; staying healthy after chemotherapy; and concerns of patients after chemotherapy. CONCLUSION Despite complaints about the bad experiences of their chemotherapy-induced side-effects, these patients still managed to complete the entire course of chemotherapy. Moreover, there is a need for a clinical pharmacy service in the oncology clinic setting in Malaysia in order to provide relevant information to help patients understand the chemotherapy received.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To longitudinally describe practice of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) self-care strategies for nausea during radiotherapy. METHODS Two hundred patients daily registered nausea and practice of CAM self-care strategies, beside conventional antiemetic medications, for nausea during abdominal/pelvic irradiation (median five weeks) for gynecological (69%) colorectal (27%) or other tumors (4%). RESULTS During radiotherapy, 131 (66%) experienced nausea, and 50 (25%) practiced self-care for nausea at least once, for a mean (m) of 15.9days. The six of 50 patients who stayed free from nausea practiced self-care more frequent (m=25.8days) than the 44 patients experiencing nausea (m=14.5) (p=0.013). The CAM self-care strategies were: modifying eating (80% of all self-care practicing patients, 80% of the nauseous patients versus 83% of the patients free from nausea; ns) or drinking habits (38%, 41% vs 17%; ns), taking rests (18%, 20% vs 0%; ns), physical exercising (6%, 2% vs 33%; p=0.035), acupressure (4%, 5% vs 0%; ns) and self-induced vomiting (2%, 2% vs 0%; ns). CONCLUSION A fourth of patients undergoing emetogenic radiotherapy practiced CAM self-care for nausea, mostly by modifying eating or drinking habits. The CAM self-care practicing patients who did not become nauseous practiced self-care more frequent than the nauseous patients did. To make such self-care evidence based, we need studies evaluating its efficacy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review was intended to identify the effectiveness and inclusion of essential components of self-management education interventions to support patients with cancer in developing the skills needed for effective self-management of their disease and the acute or immediate, long-term, and late harmful effects of treatments. METHODS Self-management education interventions were included if they were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) containing at least one of the eight core elements outlined by the research team. A systematic search was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE (2005 through April 2015), Embase (2005 to 2015, week 15), the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Issue 4, April 2015), CINAHL (2005 to 2015) and PsychINFO (2005 to 2015). Keywords searched include 'self-management patient education' or 'patient education'. RESULTS Forty-two RCTs examining self-management education interventions for patients with cancer were identified. Heterogeneity of interventions precluded meta-analysis, but narrative qualitative synthesis suggested that self-management education interventions improve symptoms of fatigue, pain, depression, anxiety, emotional distress and quality of life. Results for specific combinations of core elements were inconclusive. Very few studies used the same combinations of core elements, and among those that did, results were conflicting. Thus, conclusions as to the components or elements of self-management education interventions associated with the strength of the effects could not be assessed by this review. CONCLUSION Defining the core components of cancer self-management education and the fundamental elements for inclusion in supporting effective self-management will be critical to ensure consistent and effective provision of self-management support in the cancer system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a global problem and constitute a major clinical problem in terms of human suffering. The high toxicity and narrow therapeutic index of chemotherapeutic agents makes oncology pharmacovigilance essential. The objective of the present study was to assess the pattern of ADRs occurring in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy in a tertiary care teaching hospital in Ethiopia. METHODS A cross-sectional study over a 2-year period from September 2013 to August 2015 was conducted on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Gondar University Referral Hospital Oncology Center. Data were collected directly from patients and their medical case files. The reported ADRs were assessed for causality using the World Health Organization's causality assessment scale and Naranjo's algorithm. The severities of the reported reactions were also assessed using National Cancer Institute Common Terminology CTCAE version 4.0. The Pear-son's chi-square test was employed to examine the association between two categorical variables. RESULTS A total of 815 ADRs were identified per 203 patients included in the study. The most commonly occurring ADRs were nausea and vomiting (18.9%), infections (16.7%), neutropenia (14.7%), fever and/or chills (11.3%), and anemia (9.3%). Platinum compounds (31.4%) were the most common group of drugs causing ADRs. Of the reported ADRs, 65.8% were grades 3-4 (severe level), 29.9% were grades 1-2 (mild level), and 4.3% were grade 5 (toxic level). Significant association was found between age, number of chemotherapeutic agents, as well as dose of chemotherapy with the occurrence of grades 3-5 toxicity. CONCLUSION The high incidence of chemotherapy-related ADRs among cancer patients is of concern. Setting up an effective ADR monitoring and reporting system (onco-pharmacovigilance) and creating awareness among health care professionals regarding the importance of ADR reporting may help prevent the problem.

Abstract
Background Radiotherapy for localised prostate cancer has many known and distressing side effects. The efficacy of group interventions for reducing psychological morbidity is lacking. This study investigated the relative benefits of a group nurse-led intervention on psychological morbidity, unmet needs, treatment-related concerns and prostate cancer-specific quality of life in men receiving curative intent radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Methods This phase III, two-arm cluster randomised controlled trial included 331 men (consent rate: 72 %; attrition: 5 %) randomised to the intervention (n = 166) or usual care (n = 165). The intervention comprised four group and one individual consultation all delivered by specialist uro-oncology nurses. Primary outcomes were anxious and depressive symptoms as assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Unmet needs were assessed with the Supportive Care Needs Survey-SF34 Revised, treatment-related concerns with the Cancer Treatment Scale and quality of life with the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index −26. Assessments occurred before, at the end of and 6 months post-radiotherapy. Primary outcome analysis was by intention-to-treat and performed by fitting a linear mixed model to each outcome separately using all observed data. Results Mixed models analysis indicated that group consultations had a significant beneficial effect on one of two primary endpoints, depressive symptoms (p = 0.009), and one of twelve secondary endpoints, procedural concerns related to cancer treatment (p = 0.049). Group consultations did not have a significant beneficial effect on generalised anxiety, unmet needs and prostate cancer-specific quality of life. Conclusions Compared with individual consultations offered as part of usual care, the intervention provides a means of delivering patient education and is associated with modest reductions in depressive symptoms and procedural concerns. Future work should seek to confirm the clinical feasibility and cost-effectiveness of group interventions. Abstract
Introduction Patients sometimes present for radiation therapy with high levels of anxiety. Communication skills training may assist radiation therapists to conduct more effective consultations with patients prior to treatment planning and treatment commencement. The overall aim of our research is to examine the effectiveness of a preparatory programme ‘RT Prepare’ delivered by radiation therapists to reduce patient psychological distress. The purpose of this manuscript was to describe the communication skills workshops developed for radiation therapists and evaluate participants’ feedback. Methods Radiation therapists were invited to participate in two communication skills workshops run on the same day: (1) Consultation skills in radiation therapy and (2) Eliciting and responding to patients’ emotional cues. Evaluation forms were completed. Radiation therapists’ consultations with patients were then audio‐recorded and evaluated prior to providing a follow‐up workshop with participants. Results Nine full day workshops were held. Sixty radiation therapists participated. Positive feedback was received for both workshops with 88% or more participants agreeing or strongly agreeing with all the statements about the different components of the two workshops. Radiation therapists highlighted participating in role play with an actor, discussing issues; receiving feedback; acquiring new skills and knowledge; watching others role play and practicing with checklist were their favourite aspects of the initial workshop. The follow‐up workshops provided radiation therapists with feedback on how they identified and addressed patients’ psychological concerns; time spent with patients during consultations and the importance of finding private space for consultations. Conclusion Communication skills training consisting of preparing patients for radiation therapy and eliciting and responding to emotional cues with follow‐up workshops has the potential to improve radiation therapists’ interactions with patients undergoing radiation therapy. Further research is warranted, similar to the RT Prepare study, to determine whether patient anxiety can be reduced as a result of improving communication and information provision.
