Spray Drift from Three Airblast Sprayer Technologies in a Modern Orchard Work Environment

Environmental, bystander and resident exposure from orchard applications using an agricultural unmanned aerial spraying system

Unmanned aerial spraying systems (UASS), i.e., unmanned aerial vehicles designed for pesticide applications, are widely used in East Asia and increasingly prevalent in other regions of the world, including North America and Europe. However, according to a recent report of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, spray drift and exposure caused by these systems are not yet fully understood. In particular, there are at present no peer-reviewed reports on direct exposure of residents and bystanders to spray drift following UASS applications. This lack of data results in regulatory concerns with respect to the environment and human safety. The objective of this study was to quantify environmental, resident and bystander exposure following the application of a plant protection product to an orchard using a commercial UASS under field conditions. Using a fluorescent tracer, horizontal and vertical downwind drift data were collected and direct exposure of residents and bystanders located downwind the sprayed area to spray drift was quantified using display mannequins equipped with personal air sampling pumps. Spray drift and exposure inversely correlated with sampling height and downwind distance. Furthermore, drift and exposure were strongly influenced by wind speed and direction, albeit hardly affected by the growth stage of the trees. In addition, substantially less tracer was extracted from the filters of the air sampling pumps than from the coveralls worn by mannequins, suggesting that direct resident/bystander exposure to spray drift may predominantly occur via the dermal route. This report provides essential data on UASS spray drift potential that are relevant for environmental and health risk assessments related to these systems. The results are compared to predicted values of current regulatory models and previously reported field data on drift and exposure caused by different spraying equipment.

Stereoscopic plant-protection system integrating UAVs and autonomous ground sprayers for orchards

For orchard plant protection, conventional large machines and small sprayers are practically restricted by either narrow planting intervals with dense leaves or their inadequate penetration power, which leads to an unsatisfactory effect of spray. This paper proposes a stereoscopic plant-protection strategy that integrates unmanned air and ground sprayers to spray different parts of canopies to improve uniformity. In order to verify the proposal, a stereoscopic plant-protection system (SPS) was developed, consisting of a small swing-arm sprayer and a T16 plant-protection Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Then, optimal operation parameters were determined by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and orthogonal experiments, and the uniformity was finally quantified by trials. CFD and orthogonal experiments showed that a swing-arm angle of 60° and a forward speed of 0.4 m/s were optimal for the ground sprayer, whilst a height of 2.0 m from the top of canopies and a forward speed of 1.0 m/s were appropriate for the UAV. The trial results showed that the density of vertical droplet deposition varied from 90 to 107 deposits/cm² in canopies, and the uniformity was 38.3% higher than conventional approaches. The uniformity of top, bottom, inside and outside canopies was significantly improved. Meanwhile, the density of droplet deposition on both sides of leaves in all test points exceeded 25 deposits/cm², able to meet the standard of spray. This study provides a practical approach for uniform pesticide spray to large-canopy fruit trees. Moreover, the high flexibility of plant-protection UAVs and the significant trafficability of small swing-arm sprayers can solve the problem of large machine entering and leaving orchards.

Canopy spray application technology in specialty crops: a slowly evolving landscape

Many specialty crops are susceptible to insects and diseases, and as such are reliant on regular canopy pesticide applications to achieve quality attributes required for salability. The majority of specialty crop producers continue to use antiquated pesticide application technologies for directed canopy spraying such as the radial air blast sprayer that has been associated with chemical wastage and off-target drift of around 40% and 15% of total applied spray volume, respectively. However, precision sprayers are available that result in remarkable improvements to these parameters. The wide-scale adoption of precision sprayers by specialty crop producers remains low. Reasons for the continued dominance of old technologies include risk averseness of farmers and regulatory bottlenecks. However, as farm labor becomes more expensive, less available, and consumers and regulations favor sustainably produced products, motivations to improve spray application efficiency are increasing. While there are many opportunities and future directions application technology may take, sensor-controlled sprayer technology that applies a proportionate amount of spray will likely be the primary technology of precision sprayers going into the future. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Examining the role of wind in human illness due to pesticide drift in Washington state, 2000-2015

BACKGROUND

Pesticides play an important role in protecting the food supply and the public's health from pests and diseases. By their nature, pesticides can be toxic to unintended target organisms. Changing winds contribute to pesticide drift- the off-target movement of pesticides-and can result in occupational and bystander illness.

METHODS

We systematically linked historical weather data to documented pesticide drift illnesses. We used Washington State Department of Health data to identify 252 drift events that included 690 confirmed cases of illness from 2000 to 2015. To characterize wind speed and direction at the time of the events, we paired these data with meteorological data from a network of 171 state weather stations. We report descriptive statistics and the spatio-temporal extent of drift events and compare applicator-reported weather conditions to those from nearby meteorological stations.

RESULTS

Most drift events occurred in tree fruit (151/252 = 60%). Ground spraying and aerial applications accounted for 68% and 23% of events, respectively; 69% of confirmed cases were workers, and 31% were bystanders. Confirmed cases were highest in 2014 (129) from 22 events. Complete applicator spray records were available for 57 drift events (23%). Average applicator-reported wind speeds were about 0.9 m •sec- 1 (2 mi •hr- 1) lower than corresponding speeds from the nearest weather station values.

CONCLUSIONS

Drift events result from a complex array of factors in the agricultural setting. We used known spatio-temporal aspects of drift and historical weather data to characterize these events, but additional research is needed to put our findings into practice. Particularly critical for this analysis is more accurate and complete information about location, time, wind speed, and wind direction. Our findings can be incorporated into new training materials to improve the practice of pesticide application and for better documentation of spray drift events. A precision agriculture approach offers technological solutions that simplify the task of tracking pesticide spraying and weather conditions. Public health investigators will benefit from improved meteorological data and accurate application records. Growers, applicators, and surrounding communities will also benefit from the explanatory and predictive potential of wind ramping studies.
