Sugary secretions of wasp galls: a want-to-be extrafloral nectar?

Viscosity as a key factor in decision making of nectar feeding ants

It is well known that viscosity reduces the intake rates in nectar-feeding insects, such as nectivorous ants, though it remains unclear whether viscosity imposes a higher energy investment in these insects, and how this affects their feeding motivation. To address this issue, we studied feeding behavior, metabolism, and pharyngeal pump activity in the carpenter ant Camponotus mus during ingestion of ad libitum sucrose solutions. In some solutions tylose was added to modify viscosity without changing its sucrose concentration, in a way that allowed comparing: (1) two solutions with the same viscosity and different sucrose concentration (10 T and 50), and (2) two solutions with different viscosity and the same sucrose concentration (50 and 50 T). The viscosity increase was detrimental to the metabolic rate and energy balance. Ants feeding on a solution with high sucrose concentration and increased viscosity (50 T) spent extra-time until reaching a crop load similar to that reached by ingesting the solution without tylose (50). For all solutions offered, ants started feeding with the same pharyngeal pump frequencies, reflecting a similar motivation. Interesting, when ants fed on a low sucrose concentration and increased viscosity solution (10 T), their pump frequencies dropped rapidly respect to the pure-sucrose solution (50). On the contrary, pump frequencies for 50 and 50 T remained similar until the end of the intake. Since the pump frequency is strongly modulated by the ant motivation, an increase in viscosity with low sucrose content, demotivates the ants rapidly, suggesting a rapid integration of different kinds of information about the food value. Our results helped to understand how nectivorous ants could modulate their foraging decision-making.

Host traits and competitive ability jointly structure disease dynamics and community assembly

Parasitism and competition are both ubiquitous interactions in ecological communities. The ability of host species to interact directly via competition and indirectly through shared parasites suggests that host traits related to competition and parasitism are likely important in structuring communities and disease dynamics. Specifically, those host traits affecting competition and those mediating parasitism are often correlated either because of trade-offs (in resource acquisition or resource allocation) or condition dependence, yet the consequences of these trait relationships for community and epidemiological dynamics are poorly understood. We conducted a literature review of parasite-related host traits-competitive ability relationships. We found that transmission-competitive ability relationships were most often reported, and that superior competitors exhibited elevated transmission relative to their less-competitive counterparts in nearly 80% of the cases. We also found a significant number of virulence-competitive ability and parasite shedding-competitive ability relationships. We investigated these links by altering the relationship between host competitive ability and three parasite-related traits (transmission, virulence and parasite shedding rates) in a simple model, incorporating competitive asymmetries in a multi-host community. We show that these relationships can lead to a range of different communities. For example, depending on the strength and direction of these distinct trait relationships, we observed communities with anywhere from high parasite prevalence to complete parasite extinction, and either one, two or the maximum of three host species coexisting. Our results suggest that parasite-competitive ability relationships may be common in nature, that further integration of these relationships can produce novel and unexpected community and disease dynamics, and that generalizations may allow for the prediction of how parasitism and competition jointly structure disease and diversity in natural communities.

Eavesdropping on gall-plant interactions: the importance of the signaling function of induced volatiles

The galling insect manipulates the host plant tissue to its own benefit, building the gall structure where it spends during most of its life cycle. These specialist herbivore insects can induce and manipulate plant structure and metabolism throughout gall development and may affect plant volatile emission. Consequently, volatile emission from altered metabolism contribute to eavesdropping cueing. Eavesdropping can be part of adaptive strategies used by evolution for both galling insects and the entire-associated community in order to cue some interaction response. This is in contrast to some herbivores associated with delayed induced responses, altering plant metabolites during the short time while they feed. Due to the different lifestyles of the galling organism, which are associated with different plant tissues and organs (e.g leaves, flowers or fruits), a distinct diversity of organisms may eavesdrop on induced volatiles interacting with the galls. Furthermore, the eavesdropping cues may be defined according to the phenological coupling between galling organism and host plant, which results from the development of a gall structure. For instance, when plants release volatile-induced defenses after galling insects' activity, another interactor may perceive these volatiles and change its behavior and interactions with host plants and galls. Thus, natural enemies could be attracted by different volatiles emitted by the gall tissues. Considering the duration of the life cycle of the galling organism and the gall, the temporal extent of gall-induced volatiles may include more persistent volatile cues and eavesdropping effects than the volatiles induced by non-galling herbivores. Accordingly, from chemical ecology perspective we expect that galling herbivore-induced volatiles may exhibit robust effects on neighboring-plant interactions including those ones during different plant developmental or phenological periods. Information about multitrophic interactions between insects and plants supports the additional understanding of direct and indirect effects, and allows insight into new hypotheses.

Morphology, adaptation and speciation

The study of plant evolution and development in a phylogenetic context has accelerated research advances in both areas over the last decade. The addition of a robust phylogeny for plant taxa based on DNA as well as morphology has given a strong context for this research. Genetics and genomics, including sequencing of many genes, and a better understanding of non-genetic, responsive changes, by plants have increased knowledge of how the different body forms of plants have arisen. Here, I overview the papers in this Special Issue of Annals of Botany on Morphological Adaptation, bringing together a range of papers that link phylogeny and morphology. These lead to models of development and functional adaptation across a range of plant systems, with implications for ecology and ecosystems, as well as development and evolution.
