Advancing multimodal medical image fusion: an adaptive image decomposition approach based on multilevel Guided filtering

With the rapid development of medical imaging methods, multimodal medical image fusion techniques have caught the interest of researchers. The aim is to preserve information from diverse sensors using various models to generate a single informative image. The main challenge is to derive a trade-off between the spatial and spectral qualities of the resulting fused image and the computing efficiency. This article proposes a fast and reliable method for medical image fusion depending on multilevel Guided edge-preserving filtering (MLGEPF) decomposition rule. First, each multimodal medical image was divided into three sublayer categories using an MLGEPF decomposition scheme: small-scale component, large-scale component and background component. Secondly, two fusion strategies-pulse-coupled neural network based on the structure tensor and maximum based-are applied to combine the three types of layers, based on the layers' various properties. The three different types of fused sublayers are combined to create the fused image at the end. A total of 40 pairs of brain images from four separate categories of medical conditions were tested in experiments. The pair of images includes various case studies including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) , TITc, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET). We included qualitative analysis to demonstrate that the visual contrast between the structure and the surrounding tissue is increased in our proposed method. To further enhance the visual comparison, we asked a group of observers to compare our method's outputs with other methods and score them. Overall, our proposed fusion scheme increased the visual contrast and received positive subjective review. Moreover, objective assessment indicators for each category of medical conditions are also included. Our method achieves a high evaluation outcome on feature mutual information (FMI), the sum of correlation of differences (SCD), Qabf and Qy indexes. This implies that our fusion algorithm has better performance in information preservation and efficient structural and visual transferring.

F-DARTS: Foveated Differentiable Architecture Search Based Multimodal Medical Image Fusion

Multimodal medical image fusion (MMIF) is highly significant in such fields as disease diagnosis and treatment. The traditional MMIF methods are difficult to provide satisfactory fusion accuracy and robustness due to the influence of such possible human-crafted components as image transform and fusion strategies. Existing deep learning based fusion methods are generally difficult to ensure image fusion effect due to the adoption of a human-designed network structure and a relatively simple loss function and the ignorance of human visual characteristics during weight learning. To address these issues, we have presented the foveated differentiable architecture search (F-DARTS) based unsupervised MMIF method. In this method, the foveation operator is introduced into the weight learning process to fully explore human visual characteristics for the effective image fusion. Meanwhile, a distinctive unsupervised loss function is designed for network training by integrating mutual information, sum of the correlations of differences, structural similarity and edge preservation value. Based on the presented foveation operator and loss function, an end-to-end encoder-decoder network architecture will be searched using the F-DARTS to produce the fused image. Experimental results on three multimodal medical image datasets demonstrate that the F-DARTS performs better than several traditional and deep learning based fusion methods by providing visually superior fused results and better objective evaluation metrics.

Conditional Random Field-Guided Multi-Focus Image Fusion

Multi-Focus image fusion is of great importance in order to cope with the limited Depth-of-Field of optical lenses. Since input images contain noise, multi-focus image fusion methods that support denoising are important. Transform-domain methods have been applied to image fusion, however, they are likely to produce artifacts. In order to cope with these issues, we introduce the Conditional Random Field (CRF) CRF-Guided fusion method. A novel Edge Aware Centering method is proposed and employed to extract the low and high frequencies of the input images. The Independent Component Analysis—ICA transform is applied to high-frequency components and a Conditional Random Field (CRF) model is created from the low frequency and the transform coefficients. The CRF model is solved efficiently with the α-expansion method. The estimated labels are used to guide the fusion of the low-frequency components and the transform coefficients. Inverse ICA is then applied to the fused transform coefficients. Finally, the fused image is the addition of the fused low frequency and the fused high frequency. CRF-Guided fusion does not introduce artifacts during fusion and supports image denoising during fusion by applying transform domain coefficient shrinkage. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation demonstrate the superior performance of CRF-Guided fusion compared to state-of-the-art multi-focus image fusion methods.
