Mechanical behaviour of a prototype orthodontic retraction spring: a numerical-experimental study

Simulation of orthodontic tooth movement during activation of an innovative design of closing loop using the finite element method

INTRODUCTION

Although many attempts have been made to study the mechanical behavior of closing loops, most have been limited to analyses of the magnitude of forces and moments acting on the end of the closing loop. The objectives of this study were to simulate orthodontic tooth movement during the activation of a newly designed closing loop combined with a gable bend and to investigate the optimal loop activation condition to achieve the desired tooth movement.

METHODS

We constructed a 3-dimensional model of maxillary dentition reproducing the state wherein a looped archwire combined with a gable bend was engaged in brackets and tubes. Orthodontic tooth movements were simulated for both anterior and posterior teeth while varying the degree of gable bend using the finite element method.

RESULTS

The incorporation of a 5° gable bend into the newly designed closing loop produced lingual crown tipping for the central incisor and bodily movement for the first molar. The incorporation of 10° and 15° gable bends produced bodily movement and root movement, respectively, for the central incisor and distal tipping for the first molar.

CONCLUSIONS

Torque control of the anterior teeth and anchorage control of the posterior teeth can be carried out effectively and simply by reducing by half the thickness of a teardrop loop with a height of 10 mm and a 0.019 × 0.025-in cross-section, to a distance of 3 mm from its apex, and by incorporating various degrees of gable bend into the loop corresponding to the treatment plan.

Preliminary feasibility torque mechanical evaluation for 3D printed orthodontic springs with different parameters: in vitro study

Background

The purpose of the presented investigation is to evaluate the resulting torque on loaded 3D printed springs using different coil thickness and length.

Methods

Specimens were designed and printed using the 3D printer MAX (Asiga, Sydney, Australia) with 3D printable, experimental, flexible material (Code:BM2008, GC, Tokyo, Japan). The specimens were divided into three groups according to spring coil design. Control group (n = 18), length group (n = 19) and thickness group (n = 22). Groups were tested using a Sauter Machine for torque calculation (DB, Grindelwald, Switzerland) in conjunction with a universal testing machine (Zwick Z010, Ulm, Germany) for clock-wise and anti-clockwise testing. Statistical analysis was performed using the Steel–Dwass test to compare median values of the three groups in both testing directions (p < 0.001).

Results

The highest torque value was determined in the thickness group for both clockwise and anti-clockwise testing directions, achieving 44.00 N/mm and 39.62 N/mm respectively. The length group ranged from 21.65 to 11.04 N/mm in clockwise direction and from 18.04 to 11.38 N/mm in counter-clockwise testing. The control group ranged from 22.72 to 17.18 N/mm in the clock-wise direction while in the anti-clock wise testing it ranged from 21.34 to 16.02 N/mm.

Conclusions

The amount of torque produced from the computer aided designing/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) springs is being affected by diameter more than the length design parameter in comparison to the control group. The values of the thickness group are significantly higher than those of the length group (P < 0.001).

Von Mises stresses on Mushroom-loop archwires for incisor retraction: a numerical study

OBJECTIVE

To perform a numerical simulation using FEM to study the von Mises stresses on Mushroom archwires.

METHODS

Mushroom archwires made of titanium-molybdenum alloy with 0.017 x 0.025-in cross-section were used in this study. A YS of 1240 MPa and a Young's modulus of 69 GPa were adopted. The archwire was modeled in Autodesk Inventor software and its behavior was simulated using the finite element code Ansys Workbench (Swanson Analysis Systems, Houston, Pennsylvania, USA). A large displacement simulation was used for non-linear analysis. The archwires were deformed in their extremities with 0° and 45°, and activated by their vertical extremities separated at 4.0 or 5.0 mm.

RESULTS

Tensions revealed a maximum of 1158 MPa at the whole part of the loop at 5.0mm of activation, except in a very small area situated at the top of the loop, in which a maximum of 1324 Mpa was found.

CONCLUSIONS

Mushroom loops are capable to produce tension levels in an elastic range and could be safely activated up to 5.0mm.
