Vitamin/mineral supplement use among general practice patients in the United Kingdom

Senior citizens' vitamin D supplements intake: evidence from Denmark

BACKGROUND

Several public interventions have been designed in recent years to urge the intake of vitamin D supplements among the senior population to avoid the direct and indirect consequences associated with vitamin D deficiency. However, the effectiveness of these public campaigns remains quite limited. In an online survey, the current study investigates attitudes towards vitamin D supplements intake and associated behaviours in a representative sample of Danish senior citizens (N = 554) - that is, individuals aged 55 years and above.

RESULTS

Approximately half of the sample reported taking vitamin D supplements in the preceding year. Furthermore, being male and having a positive perception of individuals' own health status increased the probability of being a non-user. Increasing confidence in the information provided by health authorities (such as medical doctors and pharmacies) is particularly critical for enhancing the likelihood of non-users to purchase vitamin D supplements. However, also encouraging the uptake of vitamin D supplements in specialized supermarkets with stands and promotions seems an appealing and practical solution to increase seniors' uptake of vitamin D supplements.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study outlines the characteristics of senior Danish non-users of vitamin D supplements. Additionally, the research provides information on the strategies that could be applied by public organizations to foster vitamin D supplements intake among this target segment of the population. © 2023 The Authors. Multivitamin and protein supplement use is associated with positive mood states and health behaviors in US Military and Coast Guard personnel

Approximately 60% of Armed Forces personnel regularly consume dietary supplements (DSs). We investigated the association of mood and health behaviors with multiple classes of DSs in military and Coast Guard personnel (N = 5536). Participants completed a survey of DS use and the Quick Mood Scale to assess mood domains of wakeful-drowsiness, relaxed-anxious, cheerful-depressed, friendly-aggression, clearheaded-confused, and well coordinated-clumsy. Supplements were categorized as multivitamin/minerals (MVM), individual vitamin/minerals, protein/amino acid supplements (PS), combination products (C), herbals (H), purported steroid analogs, (S) and other (O). One-way analyses of covariance assessed associations of DSs and perceived health behavior with mood controlling for age. Logistic regression determined associations between DS use and health behavior. Users of MVM and PS reported feeling significantly (P < 0.05) more awake, relaxed, cheerful, clearheaded, and coordinated. Participants using PS and S reported feeling less friendly (more aggressive, P < 0.02). Users of MVM and PS were more likely to report their general health, eating habits, and fitness level as excellent/good (P < 0.05). Participants reporting health behaviors as excellent/good were more (P < 0.01) awake, relaxed, cheerful, friendly, clearheaded, and coordinated. As no known biological mechanisms can explain such diverse effects of MVM and PS use on multiple mood states, health, eating habits, and fitness, we hypothesize these associations are not causal, and DS intake does not alter these parameters per se. Preexisting differences in mood and other health-related behaviors and outcomes between users versus nonusers of DSs could be a confounding factor in studies of DSs.

A systematic literature review of complementary and alternative medicine prevalence in EU

BACKGROUND

Studies suggest that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widely used in the European Union (EU). We systematically reviewed data, reporting research quality and the prevalence of CAM use by citizens in Europe; what it is used for, and why.

METHODS

We searched for general population surveys of CAM use by using Ovid MEDLINE (1948 to September 2010), Cochrane Library (1989 to September 2010), CINAHL (1989 to September 2010), EMBASE (1980 to September 2010), PsychINFO including PsychARTICLES (1989 to September 2010), Web of Science (1989 to September 2010), AMED (1985 to September 2010), and CISCOM (1989 to September 2010). Additional studies were identified through experts and grey literature. Cross-sectional, population-based or cohort studies reporting CAM use in any EU language were included. Data were extracted and reviewed by 2 authors using a pre-designed extraction protocol with quality assessment instrument.

RESULTS

87 studies were included. Inter-rater reliability was good (kappa = 0.8). Study methodology and quality of reporting were poor. The prevalence of CAM use varied widely within and across EU countries (0.3-86%). Prevalence data demonstrated substantial heterogeneity unrelated to report quality; therefore, we were unable to pool data for meta-analysis; our report is narrative and based on descriptive statistics. Herbal medicine was most commonly reported. CAM users were mainly women. The most common reason for use was dissatisfaction with conventional care; CAM was widely used for musculoskeletal problems.

CONCLUSION

CAM prevalence across the EU is problematic to estimate because studies are generally poor and heterogeneous. A consistent definition of CAM, a core set of CAMs with country-specific variations and a standardised reporting strategy to enhance the accuracy of data pooling would improve reporting quality.

Multivitamins do not improve radiation therapy-related fatigue: results of a double-blind randomized crossover trial

BACKGROUND

Fatigue is a common symptom in cancer patients receiving radiation therapy.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We conducted a double-blind randomized crossover trial of multivitamins versus placebo in patients with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy to evaluate fatigue and quality of life.

RESULTS

: We randomized 40 patients to either placebo or Centrum Silver. At the middle of the radiation treatments, patients were switched from placebo to multivitamins and vice versa. Patients answered the EORTC QLQ C-30 quality of life (QOL) and Chalder fatigue questionnaires at the beginning, middle, and end of radiation therapy. Both groups experienced decreases in general (P = 0.009; P = 0.001) and physical fatigue scores (P = 0.031; P = 0.029) at the end of the course of placebo compared with the assessment prior to this treatment. We also observed significant improvements in functional (P = 0.026) and symptoms (P = 0.016) score scales of the QOL questionnaire in the patients on placebo. No significant changes were elicited with the use of multivitamins. We also observed significantly lower rates of fatigue in the patients who had just finished a course of placebo as compared with patients finishing a course of multivitamins (0 vs. 25% P = 0.035).

CONCLUSION

Multivitamins do not improve radiation-related fatigue in patients with breast cancer.

Factors associated with the intention to use vitamin D supplements: quantitative study among a sample of elderly people in a medium-sized town in the Netherlands

The objective of this study was to assess which factors are related to the intention of elderly people to use vitamin D supplements.A questionnaire that was based on several theories, feedback of experts, and personal interviews with members of the target group was distributed among a random sample of 497 elderly people in a medium-sized town in the Netherlands (response 46%). Variables measured included perceived susceptibility, severity and control with respect to developing a vitamin D deficiency or getting a bone fracture, and beliefs, perceived social norms, modeling, self-efficacy, and intention with respect to the use of vitamin D supplements. Univariate analyses of variance, chi-square tests, stepwise multiple regression, and stepwise logistic regression analysis were performed. Respondents reporting a high intention had more positive attitudes and normative beliefs, higher self-efficacy expectations with respect to using vitamin D supplements, and more often used other supplements than respondents with a low intention. Subjects who already used vitamin D supplements were more often female and already familiar with the advice and had more positive attitudes and normative beliefs than nonusers. It was concluded that many elderly people have high intentions to start using vitamin D supplements as soon as they hear about the advice. A health promotion campaign to promote the use of vitamin D supplements should aim at making elderly people familiar with the Health Council of the Netherlands' advice. Furthermore, the campaign should place emphasis on changing attitudes, perceived social norms, and self-efficacy expectations toward vitamin D supplement use.
