Practices of Self-Care in Healthy Old Age: A Field Study

Two competing psychological approaches for how to care for oneself to stay healthy in old age have coexisted and dominated the scientific literature.

OBJECTIVE

Identify the self-care practices of healthy older adults and establish the relationship between these practices and the cognitive processes involved.

METHOD

105 healthy older people (83.91% women) recorded their self-care practices using the Care Time Test and underwent a cognitive evaluation.

RESULTS

The frequency and variety of different activities that participants spent performing on a day of the week where they had the fewest obligations are as follows: nearly 7 h on seven survival activities, 4 h and 30 min on three maintenance of functional independence activities and 1 h on one activity that promoted personal development. Older people who carry out activities in a developmental approach showed better everyday memory (8.63 points) and attention levels (7.00 points) than older people who carry out activities using a conservative approach (memory: 7.43; attention level: 6.40).

CONCLUSION

The results evidenced that the frequency and variety of activities that promote personal development are associated with better attention and memory performance.

Social Support as a Mediator of the Personality-Physical Functioning Relationship in a National Sample of African Americans: A Two-Wave Longitudinal Study

The present study investigates whether social support mediates the relationship between personality traits and physical functioning among African Americans over 2.5 years. Data were collected from a national probability sample of African American adults (analytic sample N = 312). Telephone surveys included measures of the five-factor model personality traits, social support, and physical functioning. Personality traits were assessed at Time 1 (T1), and social support and physical functioning were assessed 2.5 years later at Time 2 (T2). Physical functioning was assessed using the SF-12 at T2. Results indicated that T2 social support mediated the relationship between T1 personality traits and T2 physical functioning for the traits of conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, but not for openness to experience. This information may be useful to healthcare providers and community members in developing strategies targeting personality traits in cultivating social support for health promotion.

A Successful Aging Model Based on Personal Resources, Self-Care, and Life Satisfaction

The most internationally studied models of successful aging defend that there are several pillars for a good aging: absence of disease, good cognitive and physical function, a high commitment and social activity, social capital, personal resources, life satisfaction, and spirituality. This study examines the relationships between personal resources, perceived social support, hope, spirituality, self-care and subjective well-being variables, as bases for a successful aging. One thousand and sixteen community-dwelling Spanish adults, aged 55-92 years, participated in the study. Information on variables assessed was collected using self-reported questionnaires. Confirmatory Factor Analyses and Structural models with latent variables relating all indicators and factors were estimated. The structural model positing background variables affecting personal resources which then affected self-care behaviors and finally affected life satisfaction was supported by the data. The model results emphasize the importance of personality, because largely affects the use of personal resources. The three selected personal resources (support, hope and spirituality) favor self-care behaviors. And finally, these behaviors improved life satisfaction in the old age. This result is of particular importance when policies for a successful and satisfactory aging of the population have to be designed.

A longitudinal examination of social support as a mediator of the personality-health relationship in a national sample of African Americans

The present study investigates whether social support mediates the relationship between personality traits and health among African Americans over a five-year period, filling a gap in the literature on longitudinal tests of the personality-health association. Data were collected from a national probability sample of African American adults (N = 200). Personality was assessed at Time 1 (T1), social support was assessed 2.5 years later (T2), and physical functioning was examined 5 years (T3) after T1. Telephone surveys included measures of the Five Factor Model personality traits (T1), social support (T2), and physical functioning (T3). Results suggested that relationships between the T1 personality traits and T3 physical functioning were not mediated by T2 social support. Secondary analyses found that among all T1 personality traits, higher openness and lower neuroticism uniquely predicted higher T2 social support. Further, among T1 personality traits, higher conscientiousness uniquely predicted better T3 physical functioning. This information may be useful to healthcare providers and community members in developing prevention and intervention strategies for African Americans.
