Sources of Health Information Among Select Asian American Immigrant Groups in New York City

Health information can potentially mitigate adverse health outcomes among ethnic minority populations, but little research has examined how minorities access health information. The aim of this study was to examine variations in the use of health information sources among Asian American (AA) subgroups and to identify differences in characteristics associated with the use of these sources. We analyzed data from a foreign-born community sample of 219 Asian Indians, 216 Bangladeshis, 484 Chinese, and 464 Koreans living in New York City. Results found that use of health information sources varied by AA subgroup. Print media source use, which included newspapers, magazines, and/or journals, was highest among Chinese (84%), Koreans (75%), and Bangladeshis (80%), while radio was most utilized by Chinese (48%) and Koreans (38%). Television utilization was highest among Bangladeshis (74%) and Koreans (64%). Koreans (52%) and Chinese (40%) were most likely to use the Internet to access health information. Radio use was best explained by older age and longer time lived in the United States, while print media were more utilized by older individuals. Results also highlighted differences in native-language versus non-native-language media sources for health information by subgroup. Media sources can be used as a vehicle to disseminate health information among AAs.

Physician Assistant Distribution in Texas-Mexico Border Counties: Public Health Implications

Purpose. Texas Medical Board physician assistant (PA) data were assessed to assist workforce education and planning strategies for PA programs in regions with high percentages of Hispanic populations. Methods. Data were assessed for gender, ethnicity, program attended and current employment addresses within the 14 Texas-Mexico border counties. Results. Of the 329 border county PAs, 227 self-reported as Hispanic (69%), and 53% were female. Remarkably, 72% of all Hispanic PAs attended two of the six public Texas PA Programs. Conclusions. The Sullivan Commission report of 2004 concluded that the primary cause of poor public health care for minorities resulted from unequal representation of minorities in the health care professions. Two public Texas PA programs have made substantial contributions to public health care access in poverty-stricken border areas by educating and placing Hispanic PAs within medically underserved communities.

Sources of information about MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine): perceived accuracy, importance, and implications for prevention among young adult users

The goal of this cross-sectional study was to assess the perceived accuracy and the importance of various sources of information about MDMA/ecstasy among young adult users. A respondent driven sampling plan was used to recruit a community sample of recent ecstasy users (n = 304), aged 18-30, in Ohio, who responded to structured interviews. Friends, drug abuse treatment programs, and physicians were perceived to be the most accurate sources of information about ecstasy by 45.7, 37.2, and 30.3% of the sample, respectively. Friends were considered the most important source of information about ecstasy (40.2%), followed by web sites like DanceSafe (16.2%), and MTV/VH1 television specials (6.9%). About half the sample used the Internet to obtain information about ecstasy, with younger and more educated participants significantly more likely to do so. Educated users were also significantly more likely to consider the Internet to be an important source of information. Web sites like DanceSafe were visited by four times as many users as government-sponsored web sites. Findings support the development of peer-oriented, network strategies to reach ecstasy users with prevention messages. Efforts to make prevention web sites more attractive should be considered.

Smoking behavior among urban and rural Native American adolescents in California

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have documented a high prevalence of tobacco use among Native American adolescents. However, little is known about the smoking behavior of Native American adolescents who live in urban areas. This study used statewide data from California to examine the smoking behavior and related psychosocial risk factors among Native American adolescents living in urban and rural counties.

METHODS

The Independent Evaluation of the California Tobacco Control Program conducted three population-based statewide surveys of 10th-grade California public school students in 1996, 1998, and 2000. Past-month smoking and psychosocial correlates were examined among 22,440 respondents, including 1060 Native Americans.

RESULTS

Native Americans had a 32% excess risk of past-month smoking compared with other ethnic groups. Smoking prevalence did not differ between urban (27.7%) and rural (29.3%) Native Americans. Native Americans reported higher access to cigarettes and exposure to smoking peers than other groups. Those psychosocial variables explained some, but not all, of the excess risk of smoking among Native Americans.

CONCLUSIONS

Effective smoking prevention and cessation interventions are needed for Native American adolescents in urban and rural areas of California.

Usual sources, patterns of utilization, and foregone health care among Hispanic adolescents

PURPOSE

To describe and differentiate the usual sources of health care, patterns of utilization of services, and reasons for foregone health care among Hispanic adolescents by place of birth (U.S. mainland versus Puerto Rico or other country) and gender.

METHODS

All subjects who identified themselves as Hispanic (n = 717) in a larger survey of 10,059 students in 7th (n = 3,596), 9th (n = 3,691), and llth (n = 2,772) grades in the state of Connecticut in 1996 were included in this secondary analysis. Data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment coefficients, Chi-squares, and logistic regression.

RESULTS

The majority of usual sources of medical care services were community clinics or private doctors' offices. Subjects born in Puerto Rico or countries other than the United States were more likely to use a doctor's office. About 5% reported no usual source of care. Over 25% reported not going to a doctor or other health care provider when they thought they should (foregone care). There were significant gender differences in reasons given for foregone care. Feeling connected to others was a significant predictor of having had a physical examination and negatively associated with foregone care for girls. For boys, connectedness and use of alcohol were negative predictors of foregone care.

CONCLUSIONS

The majority of Hispanic youth in this sample report having a usual source of medical care and the source differs by place of birth. Adolescents who do not report high levels of connectedness are more likely to have foregone care. The most frequent explanation given for not having sought care was that subjects thought the problem would go away. Socialization about how to access and use health care services, as well as what to expect, is needed by Hispanic adolescents who may be at risk.

Are we getting the message out to all? Health information sources and ethnicity

BACKGROUND

Over 80% of the excess deaths in minority and economically disadvantaged populations are from diseases with preventable or controllable contributing factors. However, mainstream health education targeting behavior change often fails to reach minority populations.

OBJECTIVE

To identify the health and cancer information sources used by a multi-ethnic population and to determine whether information sources differ by ethnic group, age, gender, and socioeconomic status.

METHODS

A multilingual, random-digit dial telephone survey of 2,462 Hispanic (Colombian, Dominican, Ecuadorian, and Puerto Rican) and black (Caribbean, Haitian, and U.S.-born) persons, aged 18-80 years, from a population-based quota sample, New York City, 1992.

RESULTS

All ethnic and age groups cited a health professional as the most common source of health information (40% overall). The next most commonly cited sources overall were: television (21%), hospitals or doctor's offices (18%), books (17%), magazines (15%), brochures/pamphlets (11%), and radio (8%). Responses on sources of cancer information followed a similar pattern. Black subgroups were all significantly more likely than Hispanic subgroups to get their health information from a doctor or other health professional (p = 0.001). Use of the radio as a source of health information was highest among Haitians (20.8%) and Colombians (12.5%), and lowest among U.S.-born blacks (4.2%) (p = 0.001), but there was no difference in the use of television. Among immigrants, as the proportion of life spent in mainland U.S. rose, increasing percentages cited magazines (p = 0.001) and decreasing percentages cited radio (p = 0.025) as a health information source. Less educated persons and more recent immigrants were most likely to report inability to get health information (p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Given the variation in sources of health and cancer information, identification of those most commonly used is important to health educators' and public health practitioners' efforts to target hard-to-reach ethnic minorities.

Health-related, help-seeking behaviors in female Mexican-American adolescents

PURPOSE

To explore and describe the health-related, help-seeking behaviors of young female Mexican-American adolescents.

DESIGN

Qualitative exploratory-descriptive design using focus groups.

SETTING

Community recreation centers.

PARTICIPANTS

18 female Mexican-Americans ages 10-16 years residing in a South Central state.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

A demographic information form and semi-structured interview designed for the study.

RESULTS

Subjects described two themes of help-seeking behaviors: seeking help for physical health problems and preventive healthcare from formal sources (i.e., community health clinics, family physicians, and public schools), and seeking help for concerns about pubertal development and pregnancy from informal sources (i.e., their mothers, aunts, sisters, and friends).

CONCLUSION

While young, female Hispanic adolescents may seek help from formal sources for preventive healthcare services and physical health problems not related to sexuality, they tend to seek help from informal sources for psychosocial and sexuality issues. Community-based interventions should be developed that focus on the importance of this pattern of help-seeking behaviors for young female Hispanics.

Peer education: a viewpoint and critique

Peer education has been promoted by college health service health education programs for many years. This Viewpoint questions some assumptions that underlie the use of peer health educators and highlights some of the problems of training peers as paraprofessionals.
