Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a prevalent and aggressive malignancy with high mortality rates and significant risks to human well-being. Population-wide screening for tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes shows promise for reducing the incidence and fatality of CRC. Recent studies have suggested that NLRX1, an innate immunity suppressor, may play a role in regulating chronic inflammation and tumorigenesis. However, further investigation is needed to understand the specific role of NLRX1 in CRC. To evaluate the impact of NLRX1 on migration, invasion, and metastasis, two human colon cancer cell lines were studied in vitro. Additionally, a knockout mouse tumor-bearing model was used to validate the inhibitory effect of NLRX1 on tumor emergence and progression. The Seahorse XF96 technology was employed to assess mitochondrial function and glycolysis in colorectal cancer cells overexpressing NLRX1. Moreover, public databases were consulted to analyze gene and protein expression levels of NLRX1. Finally, the results were validated using a series of CRC patient samples. Our findings demonstrate that downregulation of NLRX1 enhances proliferation, colony formation, and tumor-forming capacity in HCT116 and LoVo cells. Conversely, overexpression of NLRX1 negatively impacts basal respiration and mitochondrial ATP-linked respiration in both cell lines, resulting in a notable decrease in maximal respiration during the standard mitochondrial stress test. Furthermore, analysis of data from the TCGA database reveals a significant reduction in NLRX1 expression in colon and rectal cancer tissues compared to normal tissues. This result was validated using clinical samples, where immunohistochemistry staining and western blotting demonstrated a notable reduction in NLRX1 protein levels in CRC compared to adjacent normal tissues. The decreased expression of NLRX1 may serve as a significant prognostic indicator and diagnostic biomarker for CRC patients.

Abstract
Hantaviruses (HVs) are rodent-transmitted viruses that can cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia. Together, these viruses have annually caused approximately 200,000 human infections worldwide in recent years, with a case fatality rate of 5–15% for HFRS and up to 40% for HCPS. There is currently no effective treatment available for either HFRS or HCPS. Only whole virus inactivated vaccines against HTNV or SEOV are licensed for use in the Republic of Korea and China, but the protective efficacies of these vaccines are uncertain. To a large extent, the immune correlates of protection against hantavirus are not known. In this review, we summarized the epidemiology, virology, and pathogenesis of four HFRS-causing viruses, HTNV, SEOV, PUUV, and DOBV, and two HCPS-causing viruses, ANDV and SNV, and then discussed the existing knowledge on vaccines and therapeutics against these diseases. We think that this information will shed light on the rational development of new vaccines and treatments.

Abstract
Viral infections account for a large proportion of emerging infectious diseases, and the agents included in this group consist of recently identified viruses as well as previously identified viruses with an apparent increase in disease incidence. In transplant recipients, this group can include viruses with no recognized pathogenicity in immunocompetent patients and those that result in atypical or more severe disease presentations in the immunocompromised host. In this chapter, we begin by discussing viral diagnostics and techniques used for viral discovery, specifically as they apply to emerging and rare infections in this patient population. Focus then shifts to specific emerging and re-emerging viruses in the transplant population, including human T-cell leukemia virus 1, rabies, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, human bocavirus, parvovirus 4, measles, mumps, orf, and dengue. We have also included a brief discussion on emerging viruses and virus families with few or no reported cases in transplant recipients: monkeypox, nipah and hendra, chikungunya and other alphaviruses, hantavirus and the Bunyaviridae, and filoviruses. Finally, concerns regarding infectious disease complications in xenotransplantation and the reporting of rare viral infections are addressed. With the marked increase in the number of solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplants performed worldwide, we expect a corresponding rise in the reports of emerging viral infections in transplant hosts, both from known viruses and those yet to be identified.

Abstract
Hantaviruses belong to the so-called emerging pathogens that are transmitted to humans by infected rodents and their excreta. In Central Europe, hantavirus infections usually occur in a mild to moderate form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In contrast to the mostly benign or even asymptomatic course of hantavirus infections in previously healthy individuals, the acute hantavirus infection in kidney transplant recipients represents an exceptional situation regarding diagnosis and therapy. We describe the case of a 44-year-old kidney transplant recipient with acute renal transplant failure associated with acute hantavirus infection.

Abstract
The term viral hemorrhagic fever refers to an acute systemic illness with a propensity for bleeding and shock. The viral hemorrhagic fevers endemic in the Americas include yellow fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, the South American hemorrhagic fevers, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Because these diseases are primarily zoonotic, the distribution of any given virus is generally restricted by the distribution of its natural reservoir or arthropod vector. A high index of suspicion, detailed investigation of the travel and exposure history of the patient, and a basic understanding of the incubation periods and distributions of the various reservoirs of hemorrhagic fever viruses are imperative, as are prompt notification and laboratory confirmation. Clinical management is largely supportive, with a special emphasis on safe nursing practices to prevent nosocomial transmission.

Abstract
Nephropathia epidemica (NE) is a prevalent zoonosis throughout Europe and is caused by the Puumala type of hantavirus. The incidence of NE varies in a cyclic fashion, with peaks occurring every 3rd to 4th year, coinciding with peaks in vole populations. The clinical course of NE is generally milder than haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by hantaviruses in other parts of the world. Typically, NE has a sudden onset with fever, headache, backpain and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, severe complications, e.g. gastrointestinal haemorrhage, occur and fatal cases have been reported. Renal involvement is prominent and manifests as initial oliguria and later as marked polyuria. Tests of renal function show pronounced glomerular and tubular involvement. Vaccine against Puumala virus infection as well as specific treatment for NE are still lacking.
