Effects of dietary protein and lysine levels on plasma amino acids, nitrogen retention and egg production in laying hens

Effects of Long-term Graded L-arginine Supply on Growth Development, Egg Laying and Egg Quality in Four Genetically Diverse Purebred Layer Lines

The present study was conducted to examine effects of long-term graded L-arginine supply on growth development, egg laying and egg quality in four genetically diverse purebred layer lines. The study comprised a rearing trial from hatch to week 16 and a following laying performance trial from week 17 to 41. After hatch 150 one-day-old female chicks of each genotype were distributed to three diets. The experimental diets were equivalent to 70, 100 and 200% L-arginine of age-specific recommended level (National Research Council, 1994) and were offered ad libitum to chicks (hatch to week 7), pullets (week 8 to 16) and hens (week 17 to 41). However, hens' diets were quite low in crude protein. After a pre-laying period from week 17 to 21 thirty-six pullets of each group were used further in the laying performance trial. Independent of chicken's genetic background, insufficient L-arginine supply caused lower body weight, daily weight gain and daily feed intake during the rearing (p<0.001) and induced lower laying intensity and daily egg mass production in the laying period (p<0.05). Parameters fitted to Gompertz function suggested higher adult body weight in L-arginine supplemented birds compared to insufficient supplied ones (p<0.01). Groups fed with insufficient L-arginine reached age of maximum daily weight gain later and showed lowest maximum daily weight gain (p<0.001). As a consequence of limitations in dietary L-arginine and crude protein, high performing genotypes decreased strongly in body weight, daily feed intake and performance compared to the low performing genotypes. In conclusion, L-arginine modified the amount of weight gain and feed intake, especially in growing chicks and pullets independent of genetic background. The high performing hens were more nutritionally stressed than the low performing ones, because concentrations of dietary crude protein were relatively low.

Studies on requirement and excess of isoleucine in laying hens

Three production trials and one nitrogen balance trial were conducted with Lohmann Brown hens to determine the requirement for and effects of an excess of isoleucine in layers at different ages (24 to 32 and 46 to 54 wk of age). The trials were designed as dose-response studies where isoleucine-deficient basal rations with 11.4 MJ metabolizable energy per kilogram were supplemented with varying amounts of L-isoleucine. In the production trials, dietary isoleucine concentrations ranged from 0.37 to 1.05%. In the three production trials, maximum daily egg mass was achieved at dietary isoleucine concentrations of between 0.39 and 0.75% (25 to 32 wk of age, daily egg mass 53 g), 0.40 and 0.57% (24 to 32 wk of age, daily egg mass 57 g), and 0.40 and 0.81% (46 to 54 wk of age, daily egg mass 56 g). The corresponding ranges of daily isoleucine intakes were 412 to 770 mg, 436 to 624 mg, and 431 to 874 mg. In the nitrogen balance trial, maximum total nitrogen retention was achieved at dietary isoleucine concentrations of between 0.43 and 0.57%. Dietary isoleucine concentrations higher than 0.8% caused a reduction in hen BW. Dietary isoleucine concentrations higher than 1.0% additionally caused a reduction in the daily egg mass. The study thus shows that the margin between requirement and excess of isoleucine is narrow in laying hens.

Threonine requirements of laying hens

In order to determine the Thr requirement of laying hens, two experiments were conducted using laying performance and plasma Thr concentration as parameters. At 29 and 39 wk of age, 100 and 600 laying hens in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, with average BW and high egg production rate, were randomized, housed in individual cages, and given free access to water and experimental diets with five graded levels of Thr: 0.31, 0.39, 0.46, 0.54, and 0.61% for 21 d in Experiment 1 and diets with 0.31, 0.36, 0.41, 0.46 and 0.51% Thr for 58 d in Experiment 2. On the last day of the experiment, blood samples were taken for determination of plasma amino acid concentration. Feed intake and daily egg mass increased and then decreased linearly as dietary Thr increased. Plasma Thr increased slowly, then sharply with increasing dietary Thr levels. Using the broken-line model, the Thr requirements were estimated to be 0.425, 0.428, and 0.430% or 453, 456, and 458 mg/hen per d in Experiment 1 and 0.395, 0.404, and 0.400%, or 457, 467, and 462 mg/hen per d, in Experiment 2, for egg mass, feed efficiency, and plasma Thr concentration, respectively. These results indicate that the Thr requirements expressed as milligrams per hen per day as determined by plasma Thr concentration agree with those of laying performance.

The effect of dietary lysine levels on growth and metabolism of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri)

Groups of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri; mean weight 5 g) were given diets containing 10, 12, 14, 17, 21, 24 and 26 g lysine/kg diet for 12 weeks. By analysis of the growth values the dietary requirement of lysine in this experiment was found to be 19 g/kg diet. A similar requirement value was obtained from a dose-response curve of expired 14CO2 (following an intraperitoneal injection of L-[U-14C]lysine) v. dietary lysine concentration. Liver concentrations of total lipid and carnitine and activities of lysine-alpha-ketoglutarate reductase (saccharopine dehydrogenase (NADP+, lysine-forming), EC 1.5.1.8) in the liver were not significantly different in fish from the different dietary treatments. Hepatosomatic index, however, was higher in those fish given low levels of dietary lysine.

Blood proteins and amino acids of female breeder turkeys fed on maize-soybean diets supplemented with methionine

Two hundred and six female breeder turkeys were fed on maize-soybean diets of equal energy content, containing 100, 120 or 140 g crude protein (CP)/kg to which DL-methionine was added at 0, 1, 2 or 3 g/kg diet in a factorial design. Serum albumin concentrations were found to be more sensitive measures of dietary protein adequacy than were total serum protein concentrations. Albumin concentrations at peak egg production were highest among birds fed on 120 and 140 g CP/kg diets. Four weeks later, they were highest only for those on the 140 g CP/kg diet. The elevated concentrations of blood threonine and lysine and the decreased concentration of glycine with increased dietary protein were in agreement with the data on egg production. These data suggested that a sub-optimal balance of dietary amino acids may have occurred.
