Abstract
Considering that woman's health during pregnancy is crucial to well-being as much maternal and fetal as well as the child's future, supplementation with antioxidant compounds has emerged as a promising strategy to prevent the development of future diseases. Given this context, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of lutein carrier nanoparticles supplementation during the preconception period on the offspring of Drosophila melanogaster subjected to a neurodevelopmental disorder model. Female flies, were exposed to either a standard diet or a diet containing NPs LUT (6 μM) for 24 h. Following this period, the flies were transferred to new experimental vials, and eighteen males were added, resulting in a total of 53 flies per experimental group. The male and female flies were then subdivided into two groups and exposed to either a standard diet or imidacloprid (IMI), for 7 days, to induce the neurodevelopmental disorder model, creating four experimental groups: 1) Control; 2) IMI; 3) NPs LUT; 4) NPs LUT + IMI. The hatched offspring were then used for behavioral and biochemical evaluations. Our results showed that supplementation with lutein carrier nanoparticles was able to prevent decreased activity of enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), as did neurotransmitters dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) in the head of flies, and as a consequence it prevented behavioral damages such as hyperactivity, anxiety, social interaction, repetitive movements, learning and memory in the progeny of both sexes. Thus, these findings highlight the relevance of preconception supplementation with lutein carrier nanoparticles as an effective approach to prevent the emergence of symptoms associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, paving the way for future research aimed at investigating the best intervention period to prevent ASD and ADHD-type disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The cerebellum has a long, protracted developmental period; therefore, it is more sensitive to intrauterine and postnatal insults like nutritional deficiencies. Folate is an essential nutrient in fetal and postnatal brain development, and its supplementation during pregnancy is widely recommended. This study aimed to describe the effects of maternal folate intake on postnatal cerebellum development. METHODS Twelve adult female Rattus norwegicus (6-8 weeks old) rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups and given one of four premixed diets: a standard diet (2 mg/kg), a folate-deficient (folate 0 mg/kg), folate-supplemented (8 mg/kg), or folate supra-supplemented (40 mg/kg). The rats began consuming their specific diets 14 days before mating and were maintained on them throughout pregnancy and lactation. Five pups from each group were sacrificed, and their brains processed for light microscopic examination on postnatal days 1, 7, 21, and 35. The data gathered included the morphology of the cerebellar folia and an estimate of the volume of the cerebellar cortical layer using the Cavalieri method. RESULTS Folia of the folate-supplemented and supra-supplemented groups were thicker and showed extensive branching with sub-lobule formation. The folate-deficient diet group's folia were smaller, had more inter-folial spaces, or fused. When compared to the folate-deficient group, the volumes of the cerebellum and individual cerebellar cortical layers were significantly larger in the folate-supplemented and supra-supplemented groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Folate supplementation during pregnancy and lactation improves the degree and complexity of the cerebellar folia and the volumes of individual cerebellar cortical layers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rare diseases (RDs) are life-threatening or chronically debilitating and offer a high level of complexity. The aim of this study is to assess medical students' knowledge and awareness of RDs as well as their perceptions of potential measures to boost training in RDs. The cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Medical University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in 2019. The questionnaire contained 12 questions, divided into three main categories: (1) sociodemographic profile; (2) knowledge and awareness of RDs; and (3) attitudes about potential measures to improve training in RDs. RESULTS A total of 1189 medical students completed the survey with an overall response rate of 56.4%. Only 13% of participants knew the correct definition of RDs, and a low overall level of awareness was found with regard to orphan drugs (20.3%) and genetic counselling and testing (0.5%). Respondents believed that society as a whole was largely unaware of RDs as a major public health issue. Students suggested elective courses, and invited lectures by RDs experts, and participation in research projects as the most preferred measures to improve undergraduate training. CONCLUSIONS It is crucial to address the gaps in medical students' knowledge and awareness of RDs. University curricula should consider incorporating different RDs training modalities. It is essential to encourage various stakeholders to play a more proactive role and to collaborate in these activities. Involvement of patient organisations and advocacy groups might enhance students' knowledge of the challenges faced by people with RDs. Not least, the media should be partners in this important endeavour as well.
