American Psychological Association practice guidelines for psychopharmacology: Ethical practice considerations for psychologists involving psychotropic use with children and adolescents

OBJECTIVES

This study discusses the implications of the American Psychological Association's 2011 Practice Guidelines for Pharmacology as they apply to psychologists working with juvenile clients. Special considerations apply due to concerns about the developmental side effects that occur when psychotropic medications are prescribed to children and adolescents.

METHODS OR DESIGN

This study provides recommendations for implementing each of the Practice Guidelines. Constructive criticism of the Practice Guidelines is also discussed with the aim of improving service delivery.

RESULTS

This study provides specific recommendations for psychologists regarding obtaining adequate knowledge about psychopharmacology to inform clients or consult with physicians. Suggestions are made for continuing education requirements for psychologists who work with juveniles.

CONCLUSIONS

Recommendations are made for psychologists working with juveniles to increase their knowledge of psychotropic medications for a more ethical and informed voice regarding the prescribing of such medications.

Pediatric Psychologists' Career Satisfaction: 2015 Society of Pediatric Psychology Workforce Survey Results

Little is known about the career satisfaction of pediatric psychologists, who specialize in psychological research, teaching, and clinical service in the context of pediatric healthcare. As part of the larger Society of Pediatric Psychology Workforce Survey and in collaboration with the American Psychological Association Center for Workforce Studies, this study aimed to: (1) describe the career domains which pediatric psychologists perceive to be important and their satisfaction in each domain, and (2) compare satisfaction of pediatric psychologists across work settings, number of positions, appointment duration, professional roles, career stage, academic rank, and gender. Responses from 336 pediatric psychologists demonstrated high career satisfaction. Domains of career satisfaction that received mean scores indicating high importance include balance of work and personal lives, peer/collegial support, and flexibility and choice in the workplace, but on average respondents reported being only somewhat satisfied in these domains. Total satisfaction scores were significantly higher among pediatric psychologists in 9-10 month appointments, primarily research careers, and at higher academic ranks, but scores were similar across employment settings and genders. To enhance career satisfaction and retention, pediatric psychologists may seek additional mentorship or explore new employment roles, and administrators and managers may consider adopting workplace policies or making environmental changes that could address specific areas of need.

Public Significance Statement

This study suggests that overall, pediatric psychologists are highly satisfied with their employment. However, there may be some important aspects of their work that could be more satisfying. The findings have implications for identifying professional development strategies that can maintain or enhance satisfaction.

Evaluating pediatric psychology consultation services in a medical setting: An example

We examined the nature of referrals to a health center-based pediatric psychology service from 1990 to 1993 and assessed the satisfaction of health professionals with these services. Archival evaluation of 1467 records showed that over half of the consultation requests came from general pediatrics, pediatric neurology, and surgical services and that 70% of the psychological services were delivered on an outpatient basis. The most frequent referrals were for cognitive/neuropsychological evaluation and externalizing behavior problems. Pediatric psychology trainees were involved in 94% of the consultations. Survey of health professionals (n = 143) indicated very high overall satisfaction with the quality of services delivered. Presenting problems yielding the greatest likelihood for future consultation requests were behavior problems, child abuse, coping with illness, and depression/suicide. Results are discussed in the context of previous evaluations of pediatric psychology services and recommendations for future evaluation research.

Benchmarks for work performance of pediatric psychologists

OBJECTIVE

To establish benchmarks for work performance of pediatric psychologists.

METHODS

All full members of the Society of Pediatric Psychology, Division 54 of the American Psychological Association (N = 1043), were recruited for participation in a mail survey. Four hundred and seventy surveys were returned (45%); 356 usable surveys (34%) were included in the analyses. Surveys assessed work-settings, academic appointments, salary, performance expectations and evaluations, and satisfaction.

RESULTS

Most of the survey respondents, 63%, worked in a hospital setting. On average, survey respondents were directly accountable for generating half, 52%, of their salary. Salary covered by institutions was most frequently provided for nonrevenue generating activities such as administration and teaching. Most of the sample (78%) indicated clear performance expectations and criteria.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings update and expand previously established benchmarks for work performance and have implications for the practice of pediatric psychology in an ever-changing health care environment.
