Assessing the Validity of Implicit Egotism: A Reply to Gallucci (2003)

B. W. Pelham, M. C. Mirenberg, and J. T. Jones (2002) argued that most people prefer stimuli that are associated with the self, a preference they called implicit egotism. In support of implicit egotism, Pelham et al presented evidence from 10 archival studies showing that people gravitate toward careers and places of residence that resemble their names or birthday numbers. M. Gallucci (2003) argued that alternate analyses of the same data provide strong evidence against implicit egotism. Whereas Gallucci was correct that Pelham et al's original analyses were flawed, their results remain significant even when more conservative tests are used. The authors also present new data in support of implicit egotism, including exhaustive studies of (a) common surnames and US city names and (b) common surnames and street names. The new studies also revealed that as sample sizes grow larger, studies are more likely to produce evidence of implicit egotism.

Biometrical genetic analysis of blood pressure level in the genetically hypertensive mouse

Hypertensive mice of the inbred strain BPH/2 were mated to mice of the inbred hypotensive BPL/1, and their hybrid offspring were crossed and intercrossed. The systolic blood pressures of the resulting ten populations were then subjected to a biometrical genetic analysis to determine the mode of inheritance of genes regulating blood pressure in these strains. It was found that the inheritance of elevated blood pressure was due, primarily, to the additive effects of three to five genes. There was no evidence that genetic dominance or epistasis were involved in the genetic control of blood pressure in these strains.

A biometrical genetic approach to chromosome analysis in Drosophila: detection of epistatic interactions in geotaxis

Chromosome analysis has been widely used as a first step in elucidating the genetic architecture of several behaviors of Drosophila melanogaster. These chromosome studies have generally used incomplete designs or fairly simple statistical analyses. Here I reanalyze two data sets on geotaxis from Pyle (1978) and Ksander (1966) using a biometrical genetic design. Results from the biometrical genetic reanalysis suggest that individual differences in geotaxis might be due to genes on all three major chromosomes which show extensive epistatic interactions.

Genetic basis for remating in Drosophila melanogaster. V. Biometrical and planned comparisons analyses

Drosophila melanogaster lines previously selected for fast and slow return of female receptivity were crossed to produce 16 lines (2 parental, 2 F1, 4 F2, and 8 backcross lines). Several genetic hypotheses could be tested both through particular planned comparisons among these 16 crosses and with a biometrical analysis. Both analyses identified the difference between the fast and the slow remating speed in these lines as having an autosomal basis. This is in agreement with observations from previous chromosome-substitution analyses. However, the planned comparisons yielded no significant deviations from expectations based on no dominance, no X-chromosomal factors, and no permanent cytoplasmic factors, whereas the biometrical analysis yields the best fit when some of these factors are included.

Biometric genetic analysis of blood pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat

The spontaneously hypertensive rat is the most widely studied animal model of essential hypertension, yet the genetics of transmission of high blood pressure in this strain have not been clearly defined. It has been proposed that in the spontaneously hypertensive rat, blood pressure follows a simple additive mode of inheritance and that the hypertension is primarily determined by a single major locus. To investigate the genetics of transmission of increased blood pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat, we performed a biometric genetic analysis of multiple, direct measurements of arterial pressure in unanesthetized, unrestrained rats derived by crossing spontaneously hypertensive rats with two different inbred normotensive strains, the Charles River Wistar-Kyoto rat and the Lewis rat. In both crosses, approximately 60% of the variation in blood pressure could be assigned to genotypic variation. The data fit an additive-dominance model of inheritance in which alleles decreasing blood pressure were partially dominant. Thus, in offspring derived from crosses between spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar-Kyoto rats or spontaneously hypertensive rats and Lewis rats that are raised under ordinary laboratory conditions, increased blood pressure is not determined by simple additive effects of alleles at a single major locus. The current findings are consistent with the possibility that in the spontaneously hypertensive rat, hypertension may arise from mutations in alleles that ordinarily act in a dominant fashion to suppress blood pressure.
