Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pain related to injection of propofol during induction of anesthesia decreases from 66.8% without prevention, to 22-31% of cases when lidocaine is associated. Hypnoanalgesia of the hand is currently used for painful procedures in children but has never been evaluated in this indication. The primary aim of this prospective randomized single-blind study was to evaluate the efficacy of hypnoanalgesia of the hand for the prevention of moderate to severe pain during intravenous injection of propofol alone in comparison to lidocaine admixture. The secondary aim was to compare the global satisfaction of children in both methods. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred patients aged 7-14 years, ASA 1-2, admitted for scheduled surgery under general anesthesia were randomized into two groups. Group L received a mixture of 1% propofol (3 mg/kg) and 1% Lidocaine (0.3 mg/kg). Group H received 1% propofol (3 mg/kg) after hypnoanalgesia of the hand realized by a single experimented operator. A video was made in order to evaluate the pain related to propofol injection by a blinded observer using the 4-point score of Cameron (painful ≥ 2). The global satisfaction of children was evaluated in postanesthesia care unit and documented if visual analog score was <7/10. RESULTS Ninety-six patients were analyzed. The rate of painful patients did not differ significantly between groups (8.5% in group H [n = 47] vs 6.1% in group L [n = 49], OR= 0.70; 95% CI [0.13-3.35], p = 0.65), nor did the rate of nonsatisfied patients (10.6 in group H vs. 12.2% in group L, OR = 0.85; 95% CI [0.19-3.65], p = 1). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that hypnoanalgesia of the hand alone is effective to prevent the pain related to propofol injection in children. No significant difference was found in comparison with lidocaine admixture nor for pain or satisfaction.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the effect of a cognitive behavioural intervention package (CBIP) on peripheral venous cannulation (PVC) pain, fear and anxiety in paediatric patients aged 7-12 years. DESIGN AND METHODS This randomised controlled trial included 77 paediatric patients (intervention: n = 39 and control: n = 38). The control group underwent a routine PVC procedure, whereas the intervention group attended the CBIP while undergoing a PVC procedure. Data were collected using a sociodemographic form, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Wong-Baker FACES (WB-FACES) Pain Rating Scale, the Children's Fear Scale (CFS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children-State Form (STAIC-State). The participants, their caregivers and the researcher scored PVC pain, fear and anxiety levels. The study was approved by an ethics committee. Informed consent was obtained from caregivers, and verbal consent was obtained from children. RESULTS No significant difference in pre-procedural CFS scores were noted between the CBIP and control groups (p > 0.05). However, the CBIP group had significantly lower mean procedural pain (VAS and WB-FACES), fear (CFS) and anxiety (STAIC-State) scores than the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The CBIP helped children experience less PVC pain, fear and anxiety. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Nurses can use the CBIP to help reduce PVC pain, fear and anxiety in children. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION The study was registered at Clinical-Trials.gov (NCT06018909).

Abstract
Hypnosis provides a therapeutic option for health issues like chronic pain, but individual responsiveness, termed hypnotizability, varies. Faerman et al.'s1 study showed that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can significantly improve hypnotizability, offering potential for patients with limited response to hypnosis in pain management.

Abstract
Needle-related procedures can cause pain and fear in children and may lead to avoidance of future medical care. The aim of this study is to investigate whether virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) is non-inferior to medical hypnosis (MH) by a trained healthcare provider in reducing pain in children. This non-inferiority randomized trial was conducted at a teaching hospital in the Netherlands. Children aged 6 to 18 years were randomized to treatment with VRH or MH. The primary outcome was self-reported pain, using the Wong-Baker FACES Scale (WBFS) with the non-inferiority margin defined as a difference of 1.5 points. Secondary outcomes included observer-reported pain (Numeric Rating Scale), fear (scored by children and observers with the Children's Fear Scale), blood pressure, heart rate, treatment satisfaction, and adverse effects. We randomized 138 children to VRH or MH treatment and included 114 children in the analyses (VRH n = 60, MH n = 54). We found non-inferiority for VRH compared to MH on patient-reported pain (mean difference = - 0.17, 95%CI - 1.01;0.66). Secondary outcomes were comparable between VRH and MH groups. Both treatments scored high on patient satisfaction (VRH median = 9.0, MH median = 10.0, p = 0.512). CONCLUSION VRH may be an effective and safe treatment option besides MH for reducing patient-reported pain in children during a needle-related procedure. VRH was non-inferior to MH in patient-reported fear and both treatments were comparable in terms of patient-reported fear, observer-reported pain and fear, physical distress, and patient satisfaction. WHAT IS KNOWN • Medical hypnosis is effective in reducing procedural distress in children during needle-related procedures. • Virtual reality (VR) is an audiovisual electronic device that guides users into an immersive three-dimensional environment. WHAT IS NEW • This study shows that VR hypnosis is non-inferior to medical hypnosis in reducing pain and fear in children undergoing a needle-related procedure. • Both VR hypnosis and medical hypnosis were appreciated highly by children to distract them during needle-related procedures.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The implementation of shared decision-making (SDM) in acute pain services (APS) is still in its infancies especially when compared to other medical fields. RECENT FINDINGS Emerging evidence fosters the value of SDM in various acute care settings. We provide an overview of general SDM practices and possible advantages of incorporating such concepts in APS, point out barriers to SDM in this setting, present common patient decisions aids developed for APS and discuss opportunities for further development. Especially in the APS setting, patient-centred care is a key component for optimal patient outcome. SDM could be included into everyday clinical practice by using structured approaches such as the "seek, help, assess, reach, evaluate" (SHARE) approach, the 3 "MAking Good decisions In Collaboration"(MAGIC) questions, the "Benefits, Risks, Alternatives and doing Nothing"(BRAN) tool or the "the multifocal approach to sharing in shared decision-making"(MAPPIN'SDM) as guidance for participatory decision-making. Such tools aid in the development of a patient-clinician relationship beyond discharge after immediate relief of acute pain has been accomplished. Research addressing patient decision aids and their impact on patient-reported outcomes regarding shared decision-making, organizational barriers and new developments such as remote shared decision-making is needed to advance participatory decision-making in acute pain services.
