Study of the neutron field around ENSA-DPT spent fuel transport and storage casks

Neutron field measurements around individual DPT type spent fuel transport and storage casks were performed at the storage installation of Trillo Nuclear Power Plant. Neutron spectra were determined at five different positions using a Bonner sphere system. These measurements were used to validate the dosimetry measurements of two neutron monitors. Axial and angular measurements were used to determine the ambient dose equivalent. The results are consistent with the cask design and no field correction is needed when using these monitors.

Workplace monitoring of mixed neutron-photon radiation fields and its contribution to external dosimetry

Workplace monitoring is a common procedure for determining measures for routine radiation protection in a particular working environment. For mixed radiation fields consisting of neutrons and photons, it is of increased importance because it contributes to the improved accuracy of individual monitoring. An example is the determination of field-specific correction factors, which can be applied to the readings of personal dosemeters. This paper explains the general problems associated with individual dosimetry of neutron radiation, and describes the various options for workplace monitoring. These options cover a range from the elaborate field characterisation using transport calculations or spectrometers to the simpler approach using area monitors. Examples are given for workplaces in nuclear industry, at particle accelerators and at flight altitudes.

Testing of a thermoluminescent personal dosimeter at interim storages for spent nuclear fuel

The National Radiation Protection Institute in Prague is about to use a commercially available multi-element whole-body thermoluminescence dosimeter for its radiation personnel. During the phase of practical verification of the method, the dosimeter was tested, among others, in mixed neutron-photon fields in the area of interim storages for spent nuclear fuel of the Czech nuclear power plant Dukovany. The testing was made with the intention to get information about accuracy of H(p)(10) determination for cases when no site-specific calibration is available or neutron spectra are not known. The measured photon and neutron personal dose equivalents were evaluated and discussed in relation to results obtained by survey meters and neutron spectra measured before.
