Mental disorder and subsequent marital separation among migrant and non-migrant women

Using national register data between 2006-2014, we investigated the relationship between outpatient mental health service use (a proxy for mental disorder) and subsequent marital separation among women in Norway and whether the strength of the association differed for migrant and non-migrant women. Our sample population included 679,928 married women aged 18-60 years. Service use was strongly associated with marital separation among all women. The relationship was stronger for Filipinas but weaker for Somalis and Russians, compared with non-migrant women. Migration-related factors may influence marital separation among migrant women and barriers to care are likely to exist.

Mental health outcome measures in the Australian context: what is the problem represented to be?

BACKGROUND

There is growing interest in the use of routine outcome measures (ROM) in mental health services worldwide. Australia has been at the forefront of introducing ROM in public mental health services, with the aim of improving services and consumer outcomes.

METHODS

An in-depth policy and document analysis was conducted using Carol Bacchi's 'What is the problem represented to be?' approach to critically analyse the use of ROM. This approach was used to identify and analyse the problem representations relating to the need for, and the choice of, outcome measures in Australian public mental health services, and the potential consequences of policy and practice. Data included in the analysis were seven policy documents, four reports on the introduction of outcome measures in Australia, the Australian Mental Health Outcomes and Classifications Network website, and the content of the outcome measures themselves.

RESULTS

Two dominant representations of the 'problem' were identified: 1) the 'problem' of mental health service quality and accountability, relating to the need for mental health outcome measures; and 2) the 'problem' of addressing deficits in biopsychosocial functioning of mental health consumers, which relates to the choice of outcome measures. Framing the 'problem' of mental health outcomes in these ways locates the problem within individual health providers, services, and consumers, ignoring the broader socioeconomic conditions underpinning mental health and effective service provision.

CONCLUSIONS

This critical analysis of the introduction and use of ROM in public mental health services in Australia highlights the need to consider the role of the social determinants of mental health, mental health service funding, and recovery-oriented care in ensuring services are meeting consumer needs and expectations. Broader governmental engagement is central to genuine change and opportunities.

Understanding Intimate Partner Violence Among Ethnic and Sexual Minorities: Lived Experiences of Queer Women in Norway

Drawing upon in-depth, semi-structured interviews, this study explored how queer women from ethnic minority backgrounds in Norway understand and experience intimate partner violence (IPV). Based on an intersectional approach, the study highlights and discusses how having multiple minority positions may inform and affect the way participants experience IPV. The analysis shows that participants' experiences of IPV are shaped by their multiple minority statuses in Norwegian society. A discussion is provided that revolves around how being a sexual as well as an ethnic minority generates a significant power imbalance for the participants in their relationships.

Transnational marriages and the health and well-being of Thai migrant women living in Norway

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the health and well-being of Thai immigrant women in transnational marriages.

Design/methodology/approach

Interviews with 13 Thai women living in Norway who have (had) a Norwegian spouse/partner were conducted and the transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis.

Findings

Initial culture shock and a mixture of employment issues, transnational ties, marital relationships and social networks intertwined to influence women’s health and well-being over time. Sending financial remittances to family in Thailand could be challenging due to struggles to obtain suitable employment, working in low-paid physical jobs and spouses’ lack of understanding of this cultural practice. Over time, these intertwined factors led to chronic stress and deteriorating health for some. Thai networks and friendships were important for emotional and practical support.

Practical implications

More organised assistance may be beneficial to facilitate integration, reduce social isolation and improve employment opportunities.

Originality/value

Research on Thai women has so far focused on their position as immigrant wives and the vulnerabilities to exploitation and abuse they face. Focusing on only discourses around marital relationships may be limiting when trying to understand factors that influence the health and well-being of Thai immigrant women.

A 'civic turn' in Scandinavian family migration policies? Comparing Denmark, Norway and Sweden

Family migration policy, once basing citizens and resident foreigners' possibilities to bring in foreign family members mainly on the right to family life, is increasingly a tool states use to limit immigration and to push newcomers to integrate into civic and economic life. The family migration policies of Denmark, Norway and Sweden range widely - from more minimal support and age requirements to high expectations of language skills, work records and even income levels. While in Denmark and increasingly in Norway growing sets of requirements have been justified on the need to protect the welfare state and a Nordic liberal way of life, in Sweden more minimal requirements have been introduced in the name of spurring immigrants' labor market integration even as rights-based reasoning has continued to dominate. In all three countries, new restrictions have been introduced in the wake of the refugee crisis. These cases show how prioritizations of the right to family life vis-à-vis welfare-state sustainability have produced different rules for family entry, and how family migration policies are used to different extents to push civic integration of both new and already settled immigrants.

Repensar los cuidados a la luz de la reproducción social: una propuesta para vincular los circuitos migratorios

Los cuidados se han convertido en un elemento predominante en gran parte de las investigaciones feministas sobre migraciones globalizadas y la transferencia de trabajo del Sur al Norte. El concepto de reproducción, en cambio, ha sido relegado durante años a un segundo plano, aunque ahora se está convirtiendo en el foco de los debates sobre la mercantilización de los cuidados en el hogar y las transformaciones de las políticas del estado de bienestar. Este artículo sostiene que, si vinculamos los diversos circuitos de migración y, sobre todo, los relacionados con el empleo y la familia, podremos comprender mejor las diferentes formas y recorridos de los cuidados en la reproducción de personas, familias y comunidades, tanto migrantes como no migrantes. Para ello, me retrotraigo a los trabajos estadounidenses sobre minorías racializadas y migrantes, así como sobre reproducción social estratificada. Asimismo, tomo algunas ideas de los actuales estudios asiáticos sobre circuitos migratorios generizados que establecen vínculos entre las migraciones por empleo y por matrimonio. También uso la noción de ‘familias transnacionales’ que pone de manifiesto cómo operan las políticas de género de la reproducción social, tanto en el seno como más allá de las familias, los hogares y las estructuras institucionales y de bienestar. Al contrario que en Asia, los estudios europeos apenas se han centrado en la vinculación que existe entre las migraciones laborales y las familiares desde el punto de vista de la reproducción social. Sin embargo, relacionar los diferentes tipos de migraciones permite comprender en su complejidad las trayectorias de los cuidados y el modo en que éstas contribuyen a la reproducción social.

A proper wife, a proper marriage: Constructions of ‘us’ and ‘them’ in Dutch family migration policy

Migration policy is a product and producer of identities and values. This article argues that discourses and policies on family reunification participate in the politics of belonging, and that gender and family norms play a crucial role in this production of collective identities, i.e. in defining who ‘we’ are and what distinguishes ‘us’ from ‘the others’. Tracing the development of political debates and policy-making about ‘fraudulent’ and ‘forced’ marriages in the Netherlands since the 1970s, the authors examine how categories of gender and ethnicity interact with ‘other’ transnational marriages and the women who engage in them. These practices of ‘othering’ legitimize restrictive reforms of marriage migration policies. Also, and no less importantly, they serve the symbolic function of defining Dutch identity, and show that the government protects this identity.

Rethinking care through social reproduction: articulating circuits of migration

Care has come to dominate much feminist research on globalized migrations and the transfer of labor from the South to the North, while the older concept of reproduction had been pushed into the background but is now becoming the subject of debates on the commodification of care in the household and changes in welfare state policies. This article argues that we could achieve a better understanding of the different modalities and trajectories of care in the reproduction of individuals, families, and communities, both of migrant and nonmigrant populations by articulating the diverse circuits of migration, in particular that of labor and the family. In doing this, I go back to the earlier North American writing on racialized minorities and migrants and stratified social reproduction. I also explore insights from current Asian studies of gendered circuits of migration connecting labor and marriage migrations as well as the notion of global householding that highlights the gender politics of social reproduction operating within and beyond households in institutional and welfare architectures. In contrast to Asia, there has relatively been little exploration in European studies of the articulation of labor and family migrations through the lens of social reproduction. However, connecting the different types of migration enables us to achieve a more complex understanding of care trajectories and their contribution to social reproduction.
