Benchmarks for Evaluating Life Review and Reminiscence Therapy in Alleviating Depression among Older Adults

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Effectiveness of Cognitive-Reminiscence Therapy among Jordanian People with Major Depressive Disorders: A Mixed Methods Study

Depression is a major public health problem around the world. Negative automatic thoughts are cognitive errors that build in the mind, leading to depression. Cognitive-reminiscence therapy is one of the most effective psychosocial methods for managing cognitive errors. This study aimed to evaluate cognitive reminiscence therapy's feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness among Jordanian patients with major depressive disorder. A convergent-parallel design was employed. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 36 participants (Site 1: n = 16, Site 2: n = 20). A total of 31 participants were included in the analysis, divided into six groups, with 5-6 participants in each group. Cognitive-reminiscence therapy included eight supported sessions of up to 2 h each, delivered over 4 wk. Recruitment, adherence, retention, and attrition rates of 80%, 86.1%, and 13.9%, respectively, indicated the feasibility of the therapy. The acceptability of therapy was reflected in the following four themes: Positive Cognitive Reminiscence Therapy Perspectives and Outcomes; Cognitive Reminiscence Therapy Sessions Challenge; Suggestions for Improving Cognitive Reminiscence Therapy Sessions; and Motivational Home Activities. A significant reduction in the mean of depressive symptoms and negative automatic thoughts and a significant increase in the self-transcendence mean demonstrated the effectiveness of the intervention. The study's results suggest that cognitive reminiscence therapy is feasible and acceptable among patients with major depressive disorder. This therapy is a promising nursing intervention to reduce depressive symptoms and negative automatic thoughts and increase self-transcendence for those patients.

Life Review Intervention: A Systematic Review of Its Feasibility Among Persons With Cancer

CONTEXT

Life Review Intervention (LRI) has started to shift in emphasis of focus onto persons with cancer and its effectiveness in improving their psychological well-being. The process has now begin integrating into healthcare settings as a complementary treatment for this population.

OBJECTIVES

The current systematic review aims to synthesize existing feasibility studies on LRI among persons with cancer.

METHODS

A literature search was conducted from the databases PubMed, ScienceDirect, PsychArticles, Scopus, Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection, Cochrane, EBSCO, and other methods. Eligible articles were selected based on the predetermined inclusion criteria and data extraction revolved around the study design, intervention procedure, and feasibility and psychological outcome measures.

RESULTS

The search yielded 8,627 articles, to which respondents simultaneously receiving other forms of psychological interventions were excluded. Eight were selected for evaluation. Four were integrated interventions while the remaining were conducted with the standard intervention. The sample size range from 5 to 90 persons with cancer. All reviewed articles reported optimum feasibility, as presented by recruitment capability, participant retention rate, acceptability and satisfaction, intervention implementation, and evaluation of intervention outcome measures. However, a majority of psychological outcome measures indicated no statistical significance.

CONCLUSION

LRI is feasible to be implemented among persons with cancer, given the high acceptability and availability of resources for its implementation. The present review highlighted the preliminary knowledge on the feasibility of the intervention.

Web-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for symptoms of anxiety and depression: Within-group effect size benchmarks as tools for clinical practice

COVID-19 has highlighted the need for evidence-based behavioural health interventions that can be delivered remotely. This article provides within-group effect size benchmarks for randomised controlled trials of Internet-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the treatment of adults with anxiety and depression. Effect sizes were calculated using the Glass approach, adjusted using Hedges g, then aggregated to produce separate benchmarks for measures of anxiety and depression. These benchmarks can be used by community-based treatment providers to evaluate the effectiveness of their web-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy intervention to determine if it should be continued, modified for the unique needs of their client population and practice setting, or discontinued.

The effectiveness of reminiscence-based intervention on improving psychological well-being in cognitively intact older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Aging is one of the most important public health issues. The World Health Organization (WHO) expects the number of older adults aged 65 and above to triple from 2010 to 2050. A major challenge would be to consider how functional ability and quality of life could be enhanced in older age. Reminiscence-based interventions are widely reported as having positive effects on psychological outcomes among older adults with dementia, but its effects on cognitively intact older adults have not been clearly evaluated.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the current systematic review is to evaluate the existing evidence on the effects of reminiscence-based intervention on psychological outcomes in cognitively intact older adults.

REVIEW METHODS

Commonly used English databases, including CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE and PsycINFO, were searched from inception till 31 Mar 2020. Studies were included if they examined the effects of reminiscence-based intervention on psychological outcomes among cognitively intact older adults aged 60 and above. Meta-analysis was conducted to synthesise the effects on different psychological outcomes.

RESULTS

Thirty-one studies involving 1,829 older adults were included. The pooled standardized mean difference for depressive symptoms and life satisfaction were -0.38 (95% CI: -0.69--0.07) and 0.33 (95% CI: 0.14-0.52) respectively. Positive effects were observed on self-esteem, psychological well-being and happiness, though meta-analysis could not be conducted.

CONCLUSION

Significant reduction of depressive symptoms and improvement of life satisfaction were revealed from the reminiscence-based intervention among cognitively intact older adults. In addition, reminiscence-based intervention has been effective in enhancing self-esteem, and promoting psychological well-being and happiness. Our results suggest that reminiscence-based intervention could be an effective solution to improve psychological well-being among cognitively intact older adults. Such non-pharmacological approach can be recommended for older adults at the community level.

Themes of Gerotranscendence in Narrative Identity Within Structured Life Review

Abstract. Narrative identity is a person’s internalized and evolving life story. It provides a person with some degree of unity and purpose over the life course. It is shaped by the themes, plots, and images available within an individual’s culture. Research in narrative gerontology finds that positive themes within narrative identity in late life are sparse because of a pervading “narrative of decline,” which may contribute to prevalence of late life depression. Structured Life Review (SLR) is an effective intervention to manage depressive symptoms in older adults. It relies on clinician-guided storytelling and themes drawn from Erikson’s developmental stages to foster positive narrative identity. In this theoretical review, the authors explore gerotranscendence-related themes to inform narrative identity through SLR, the goal being to advance the argument that gerotranscendence can adaptively navigate negative narrative themes. It should be considered within clinical narrative practice to improve psychological well-being for older adults.
