Influence of Temperature and Humidity on the Viability of Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum Conidia

Temporal Dynamics and Dispersal Patterns of the Primary Inoculum of Coniella diplodiella, the Causal Agent of Grape White Rot

Grape white rot can cause considerable yield losses in viticulture areas worldwide and is principally caused by Coniella diplodiella. The fungus overwinters in berry mummies on the soil surface or on the trellis and produces pycnidia and conidia that serve as primary inoculum. However, little is known about the temporal dynamics and dispersal pattern of C. diplodiella conidia. In this study, we investigated the production and dispersal of C. diplodiella conidia from a primary inoculum source, namely, affected mummified berries that overwintered in two vineyards in northern Italy in 2021 and 2022. Conidia of C. diplodiella were repeatedly produced in berry mummies from the budburst of vines to harvesting, with approximately 50 and 75% of the total conidia in a season being produced before fruit set and véraison, respectively. The production dynamics of C. diplodiella conidia over time were described by a Weibull equation in which the thermal time is the independent variable, with a concordance correlation coefficient of ≥0.964. A rainfall cutoff of ≥0.2 mm provided an overall accuracy of ≥0.86 in predicting conidial dispersal through rain splashes from berry mummies on the soil surface, with the number of dispersed conidia increasing with the amount of rainfall. The dispersal of conidia from mummies on the trellis by washing with rain required at least 6.1 mm of rain. The proposed mathematical equations and rain cutoffs can be used to predict periods with a high dispersal risk of C. diplodiella.

Ecological Status of Juglans cinerea in New Brunswick

Butternut (Juglans cinerea L.), an early successional riparian hardwood species native to Canada and the United States, is under serious threat from a nonnative fungal pathogen, Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum. Since it was first reported in Canada in 1990, this fungal pathogen has spread rapidly and established in New Brunswick in 1997. Apart from the first report in 1997 and another in 2004, no surveys have been conducted to assess the spread of the pathogen in the province. The purpose of this research was to survey butternut throughout its range in New Brunswick, evaluate disease occurrence as well as tree health, and investigate the impact of different topographic and tree health factors on canker incidence. Results showed that the disease has spread throughout the range of butternut in New Brunswick. The disease likely only recently (2007) spread to the northeastern-most populations, given that lower rates of canker occurrence and higher health ratings are found further away from the point of initial occurrence of the disease. Although canker incidence is high throughout the province, tree dieback is minimal, and trees still producing nuts could support opportunities for ex situ conservation. Because of the rate of pathogen spread in the province, implementing a tree improvement strategy might be the only means for maintaining the butternut genome on the landscape.

Factors Influencing the Regional Dynamics of Butternut Canker

Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is an important component of native biodiversity in eastern North America. Of urgent concern is the survival of butternut, whose populations are declining rapidly, in large part due to an exotic pathogen, Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum, that causes butternut canker. The disease presently occurs throughout the range of butternut in North America, causing branch and stem cankers, dieback, and tree mortality. Despite the existential threat posed by O. clavigignenti-juglandacearum to butternut, a detailed understanding of the factors that drive cross-scale disease patterns is lacking. Therefore, we investigated the association of a range of factors, including tree attributes, topography, and weather, with butternut canker spatial dynamics at different scales using data collected in the province of Quebec, Canada. Trunk canker damage and dieback showed distinct geographic patterns. Bark phenotype was not significantly associated with trunk canker damage. Results suggest that open or dominant trees may show less dieback than intermediate or suppressed trees. Probability of the presence of trunk canker and percent dieback were proportional to the tree diameter at breast height. Temperature was positively associated with disease severity at a 1-km² scale. Our results provide strong evidence that multiple factors, notably weather, influence butternut canker epidemiology.

Regional patterns of declining butternut (Juglans cinerea L.) suggest site characteristics for restoration

Butternut trees dying from a canker disease were first reported in southwestern Wisconsin in 1967. Since then, the disease has caused extensive mortality of butternut throughout its North American range. The objectives of this study were to quantify changes in butternut populations and density across its range and identify habitat characteristics of sites where butternut is surviving in order to locate regions for potential butternut restoration. The natural range of butternut (Juglans cinerea L.) extends over a large region of eastern N. America encompassing New Brunswick south to North Carolina, north to Minnesota, and southwest to Missouri. Despite the species' large range, it is typically not a common tree, comprising a relatively minor component of several different forest types. We evaluated change in butternut abundance and volume from current and historic data from 21 states in the eastern United States. We related abundance and volume at two time periods to a suite of ecological and site factors in order to characterize site conditions where butternut survived. We also assessed the current level of butternut mortality across its range. Since the 1980s, the number of butternut trees and butternut volume have decreased by 58% and 44%, respectively, across its US range. Substantial relative decreases in tree numbers and volume occurred in most ecoregion sections. Five environmental variables were found to be significant predictors of butternut presence. The potential impacts of butternut canker are particularly acute as the canker pathogen invasion pushes a rare tree species toward extinction, at least at a local scale. Based on the results presented here, large-diameter maple/beech/birch stands in dry, upland sites in eastern Minnesota, western Wisconsin, and upstate New York appear to offer the most favorable conditions for butternut growth and survival and thus may be the best stands for planting resistant butternut trees.
