The Role of Tc-99m DTPA Renal Dynamic Scintigraphy in Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma

Purpose

Technetium-99m diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (Tc-99m DTPA) renal dynamic scintigraphy is a widely used imaging technique that evaluates renal function of patients with extrarenal abnormalities, but its clinical value in potentially offering us information on proliferation of liposarcoma has not yet been reported.

Methods

We retrospectively reviewed 7 patients with histopathologically confirmed retroperitoneal liposarcoma who underwent Tc-99m DTPA renal dynamic scintigraphy. The clinical data, histopathological findings, Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), and Tc-99m DTPA uptake were recorded.

Results

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma and well-differentiated liposarcoma showed dissimilar degrees of Tc-99m DTPA uptake, an observation that correlated with Ki-67 expression (p < 0.01). 4 of the 7 patients were diagnosed with dedifferentiated liposarcoma, showing a moderate uptake of Tc-99m DTPA and greater than 20% Ki-67 expression on histological slides. Meanwhile, the remaining 3 patients, diagnosed with well-differentiated liposarcoma, showed no uptake of Tc-99m DTPA and Ki-67 expression of less than 5%.

Conclusions

This study suggests that Tc-99m DTPA renal dynamic scintigraphy provides diagnostic value in patients with retroperitoneal liposarcoma, not only in evaluating renal function but also in visualizing lesion-related radionuclide uptake, which may potentially offer further clinical insights into tumor proliferation and provide prognostic value for clinical outcomes in patients with retroperitoneal liposarcoma.

Retroperitoneal Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor on 99mTc-DTPA Renal Scintigraphy

Findings of Tc-DTPA renal scintigraphy of a retroperitoneal malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor are reported here. The patient was a 48-year-old woman who presented discomfort and intermittent dull pain in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen for approximately 3 weeks.

Giant lipomas of the upper extremity: Case reports and a literature review

Giant fibrolipomas involving the upper extremities are rare tumours. These large masses grow slowly and produce symptoms due to their size, location and compression of adjacent structures. Surgical excision usually leads to complete recovery from symptoms.

Incidental DTPA and DMSA uptake during renal scanning in unknown bone metastases

We report a patient with DTPA and DMSA uptake on unsuspected bone metastases. He had severe pain due to grade 3 hydronephrosis of his left kidney. When Tc-99m DTPA and DMSA renal scanning were performed for preoperative evaluation, abnormal radiopharmaceutical uptake on the iliac area was noted. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma metastases to bone were subsequently defined. This patient is a very demonstrative case in respect of having all DTPA, DMSA and HDP uptakes in bone metastases. The type of the tumor has to be added to the list of extrarenal uptake of DTPA and DMSA as a rare cause.

PET-FDG en paciente con enfermedad de Von Recklinghausen y neurofibrosarcoma dorsal izquierdo

The development of neurofibrosarcomas in patients with Von Recklinghausen disease is a rare complication that can appear in the daily clinical practice. We report a clinical case with Von Recklinghausen disease and recurrence of a left dorsal neurofibrosarcoma diagnosed by Positron Emission Tomography with fluorine-18-fluoro-deoxyD-glucose (FDG-PET). We believe this work is important due to the relatively uncommon clinical presentation and the discussion on the utility of 18-FDG PET and other conventional imaging methods in the diagnosis of this entity.

Extrarenal uptake of Tc-99m-DTPA in a case of retroperitoneal abscess causing spurious data in renal function assessment

The author reports CT of the abdomen and quantitative analysis of renal scintigraphy that was spuriously assessed due to unwanted extrarenal uptake. The patient had a retroperitoneal abscess that was related to fistula from the right kidney. Renal scintigraphy was performed to assess split renal function as a preoperative evaluation for nephrectomy. The computer generated differential function did not appear to coincide with the visual analysis. This discrepancy was believed due to extrarenal uptake from the area of the retroperitoneal abscess.

Uterine technetium-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid uptake in the scintigraphic evaluation of transplanted kidneys

An anuric 35-year-old woman with a renal transplant underwent serial renal scintigraphy studies to screen the kidney function. A hypervascular pelvic mass in the region of the bladder was identified during technetium-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) and also during 99mTc diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (DT-PA) scintigraphy. She was in the secretory phase of the uterine cycle during the study and had no gynaecological problem to explain the radioactivity accumulation. The accumulation of 99mTc-MAG3 mimicking the bladder was considered as uterine activity. To our knowledge, this is the first case of uterine visualization with 99mTc-MAG3.
