Kinetics of radiocesium sorption in lake sediments

On the shapes of deep slopes of radiocesium vertical profiles in lake sediments

The shapes of the deep slope (below the maximum values) of the vertical profiles of radiocesium activity concentrations in the sediment samples taken in 2003-2012 in the Lakes Juodis, Tapeliai and Red lake were studied. The Gaussian shape of the deep slope indicates the migration of radiocesium into the depths of the sediments, and this process is significantly enhanced in some places due to bioturbation caused by tench preparing for hibernation. The exponential shape of the deep slope is typical for sediments in which in winter, in the presence of an ice cover on the lake, thermodynamic mixing occurs in the surface layer caused by the effects of pore water buoyancy. In these sediments, radiocesium dissolved in the pore fluid migrates upwards into the near-bottom water, becoming a source of secondary pollution of the water column. In winter, the presence of such a process is easily determined by the emergence of a layered structure of the water column in the lake and the temperatures of the near-bottom waters exceeding 4 °C. In this case, each layer is characterized by constant standard water parameters (temperature, conductivity, concentrations of oxygen, and trace elements). Complex forms of the deep slope of the vertical profile of radiocesium activity concentrations, combining elements of the exponential and Gaussian forms, indicate the episodic presence of both migration mechanisms. A method is proposed for identifying sediments that are a source of secondary pollution of lake waters by estimating the differences between the normalized logarithms of the radiocesium activity concentrations of the deep slopes (below the maximum concentrations) of its vertical profiles in the sediments of the studied samples and the sample of the carbonate barrier sediments, which were discovered in the shallow part of Lake Juodis in 2003.

Study of the formation of the primary 137Cs vertical profile in the organic matter-rich sediments

A laboratory study of the formation of the primary vertical profile of the ¹³⁷Cs activity concentration in the anaerobic organic matter-rich sediments was carried out. The incubation was performed using sediment baths method (initial thickness of the water layer over the sediments ∼40 cm, initial radiocesium activity concentration in water ∼14.53 Bq·L^-1). An exponential profile (R²∼0.999) with the half-height width of ∼0.65 cm was formed after ∼32 days of the incubation. A further course of the experiment (sediments were sampled after 64, 130 and 293 days of the incubation) revealed deviations in the form of the radiocesium activity concentration profile related to the appearance of the additional Gauss factor with the increasing half-height width of ∼1.2, ∼1.3 and ∼3 cm, respectively. In spite of the evident growth of the half-height width, the radiocesium migration rate decreased from 0.02 cm·day^-1 for the first 32 days of incubation down to 0.009 cm·day^-1 at the end of the incubation experiment. Such a time-dependent decrease in the radiocesium migration is possibly related to the beginning of the second radiocesium migration phase depending on the retardation factor. Besides diffusion, the formation of vertical profiles of radiocesium activity concentrations in sediments was additionally induced by effects of buoyancy of the upper sediment layer due to the seepage of the above lying water into sediments.

Sediment particle size and initial radiocesium accumulation in ponds following the Fukushima DNPP accident

This study used particle size analysis to investigate the initial accumulation and trap efficiency of radiocesium ((137)Cs) in four irrigation ponds, ~4-5 months after the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (DNPP) accident. Trap efficiency, represented by the inventory of (137)Cs in pond sediment to the inventory of radiocesium in soil surrounding the pond (i.e., total (137)Cs inventory), was less than 100% for all but one pond. Trap efficiency decreased as sediment particle size increased, indicating that sediments with a smaller particle size accumulate more (137)Cs. In ponds showing low trap efficiency, fine sediment containing high concentrations of (137)Cs appeared to be removed from the system by hydraulic flushing, leaving behind mostly coarse sediment. The results of this study suggest that sediment particle size can be used to estimate the initial accumulation and trap efficiency of (137)Cs in pond sediment, as well as the amount lost through hydraulic flushing.

On the radiocesium carbonate barrier in organics-rich sediments of Lake Juodis, Lithuania

Radiocesium vertical profiles in organics-rich sediments of running shallow eutrophic Lake Juodis (Lithuania) were studied in relation to seasonal variations of vertical profiles (in water column and sediments) of standard variables (pH, redox potential, temperature, oxygen concentrations, conductivity). It is shown that the sedimentation rate, radiocesium mobility and its vertical profiles in sediments are controlled by the vital cycle (processes of the growth, accumulation and decomposition) of green algae covering the main bottom areas of the lake. It is also shown that calcite deposits are formed in the shallow bottom areas that are oxygenated throughout the year because of the photosynthetic activity of the green algae covering the sediment. Formation of the calcite coatings on freshly accumulated organics is remarkable for causing elevated densities of sediment solids in the upper part of the respective vertical profiles. These calcite deposits behave as a barrier for radiocesium backward flux to the bottom water making the respective bottom areas a radionuclide sink. Together with the jelly-structured sediments lying below these deposits, the calcite preserves the shape of the primary radiocesium vertical profiles formed due to free-ion diffusion after the deposition event. It was determined that bottom areas anaerobic in winter are the main radiocesium source in the water column and cause characteristic radiocesium redistribution in surface sediments.
