CT and MR Imaging of Adrenal Hemangioma

Purpose:

Cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are rare, and we here describe CT and MR features of an additional case including delayed contrast CT.

Results:

On CT, the tumor appeared as a well-delineated mass. Fatty areas and calcifications were seen. On delayed contrast CT, a progressive enhancement from the periphery to the center of the tumor was noticed, similar to the contrast enhancement of liver hemangiomas. In T1-weighted MR images, a hypointense tumor with a central stellate area of hypointensity was found. The tumor had a predominantly peripheral contrast enhancement.

Conclusion:

CT and MR findings of adrenal hemangiomas are in some cases similar to those of liver hemangiomas. A tumor resection must be considered if the tumor changes in appearance or size.

Computer tomography imaging findings of adrenal cavernous hemangiomas: a report of 10 cases

BACKGROUND

Cavernous hemangiomas (CHs) of the adrenal gland are extremely rare. To date, only a few studies of adrenal CH imaging have been reported.

PURPOSE

To analyze the computed tomography (CT) imaging findings of adrenal CHs.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Ten cases of adrenal CHs confirmed by a histopathological examination were retrospectively analyzed. All of the patients had undergone unenhanced and enhanced CT examinations, and eight had also undergone multiphase CT enhancement examinations. CT characteristics, including shape, size, margin, attenuation, and enhancement patterns, were analyzed.

RESULTS

The study included six women and four men with a mean age of 49.2 years (age range, 25-62 years) and no signs of abnormal endocrine activity. The unenhanced CTs showed well-defined, heterogeneous (n = 8) or homogeneous (n = 2) density masses with scattered (n = 8) or spread calcifications (n = 2) in six tumors. In the contrast-enhanced CTs, seven tumors appeared to be marked with heterogeneous enhancement, whereas three cases exhibited no obvious enhancement. The evaluation of the pattern of dynamic enhancement in eight patients revealed that the tumors showed early peripheral enhancement (n = 4), early central enhancement (n = 1), and mixed enhancement (n = 1) with progressive partial filling-in, and no obvious enhancement in any phases (n = 2).

CONCLUSION

Adrenal CHs should be included in the differential diagnosis when an adrenal neoplasm is incidentally found and appears as a well-defined, heterogeneous mass with calcifications and various enhancement patterns, including heterogeneous enhancement with characteristic progressive partial filling-in, as well as lack of enhancement in any phase.

Rare cavernous hemangioma of adrenal gland: case report

CONTEXT

Cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are rare benign neoplastic tumors. The clinical presentation of adrenal hemangiomas is usually vague, and they are often discovered incidentally through imaging examination s performed for other reasons.

CASE REPORT

We report the case of a non-functional adrenal hemangioma found incidentally in a 37-year-old man with a one-year history of headache and hypertension. A right adrenal mass was detected by means of magnetic resonance imaging. Physical examination and all laboratory values were unremarkable. The patient underwent laparoscopic right adrenal gland resection. Histopathological evaluation confirmed adrenal cavernous hemangioma.

CONCLUSIONS

Most occurrences of cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are non-functional and often discovered incidentally. Although rare, these unusual benign adrenal masses should form part of the differential diagnosis of adrenal neoplasms. The proper treatment for adrenal cavernous hemangioma is surgical removal.

Adrenal Hemangioma: Findings at Multidetector CT with Short Review of the Literature

We present the computed tomography (CT) imaging findings of a 44-year-old male with incidentally discovered right adrenal hemangioma displaying imaging pattern of nonadenomatous pattern, associated with multiple hepatic hemangiomata using 64-slice multidetector scanner with reviewing published CT imaging findings with short review of the literature.

Case report: chronic expanding hematoma in the adrenal gland with pathologic correlations

We report a case of chronic expanding hematoma in the adrenal gland. Mixed signal intensity in a mosaic pattern was seen on T2-weighted images. A focal area suggesting a subacute hematoma was also noted. The dynamic CT scan showed heterogeneous contrast enhancement in the arterial phase and heterogeneous spread of the enhanced area within the tumor. Awareness of this finding may prevent the misdiagnosis of a tumor as a neoplastic intratumoral hemorrhage.

A case of adrenal cavernous hemangioma

Adrenal hemangiomas are rare tumor. Only 29 surgical cases have been reported. Although rare, adrenal hemangiomas should be included in the differential diagnosis of adrenal neoplasms. We report an additional case of adrenal hemangioma that was removed surgically, and the pertinent literature is reviewed.
