Abstract
AIM Design, produce and assess the viability of a novel nanotechnological antibacterial thermo-sensible intracanal medicament This involves encapsulating calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2 ) within polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) and dispersing them in a thermosensitive gel (Ca(OH)2 -NPs-gel). In addition, perform in vitro and ex vivo assessments to evaluate tissue irritation and penetration capacity into dentinal tubules in comparison to free Ca(OH)2 . METHODOLOGY Reproducibility of Ca(OH)₂-NPs was confirmed by obtaining the average size of the NPs, their polydispersity index, zeta potential and entrapment efficiency. Moreover, rheological studies of Ca(OH)2 -NPs-gel were carried out with a rheometer, studying the oscillatory stress sweep, the mean viscosity value, frequency and temperature sweeps. Tolerance was assessed using the membrane of an embryonated chicken egg. In vitro Ca(OH)2 release was studied by direct dialysis in an aqueous media monitoring the amount of Ca(OH)2 released. Six extracted human teeth were used to study the depth of penetration of fluorescently labelled Ca(OH)2 -NPs-gel into the dentinal tubules and significant differences against free Ca(OH)2 were calculated using one-way anova. RESULTS Ca(OH)2 -NPs-gel demonstrated to be highly reproducible with an average size below 200 nm, a homogeneous NPs population, negative surface charge and high entrapment efficiency. The analysis of the thermosensitive gel allowed us to determine its rheological characteristics, showing that at 10°C gels owned a fluid-like behaviour meanwhile at 37°C they owned an elastic-like behaviour. Ca(OH)2 -NPs-gel showed a prolonged drug release and the depth of penetration inside the dentinal tubules increased in the most apical areas. In addition, it was found that this drug did not produce irritation when applied to tissues such as eggs' chorialantoidonic membrane. CONCLUSION Calcium hydroxide-loaded PLGA NPs dispersed in a thermosensitive gel may constitute a suitable alternative as an intracanal antibacterial medicament.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are several measures that are, or could be, in use in relation to estimating the outcome of endodontic treatments. It is important to reflect on when and why a certain outcome measure is used; when caring for an individual patient it is obvious that the goal always should be a tooth in a healthy state, that is striving to remove any infection and aim for the tooth to have healthy periapical tissues. For patients in general and for society, it is also interesting to know if endodontic treatments will lead to retention of teeth in a functioning state. From epidemiological studies, with high prevalence of root filled teeth with periapical radiolucencies, it is implied that dentists and/or patients accept the retention of a root filled tooth with persistent apical periodontitis. In conjunction with an endodontic treatment the prognosis is considered and since the prognostic factors seem to be somewhat different depending on whether one is considering for example the outcome 'healthy periapical tissues' or 'tooth survival' they are equally important to know. Factors affecting the outcome 'healthy periapical tissues' probably has to do with removal of infection and reconstituting the barrier to prevent leakage whilst 'tooth survival' is more likely associated with factors outside of the classical endodontic field such as restorability and avoidance of further destruction of tooth substance. Objective This narrative review will focus on tooth survival after endodontic treatment and root canal treatment will be the focus. Method The search was performed in PubMed. Results As a crude estimation, there is to be an annual loss of 2% of teeth which have received a root canal treatment. Conclusion Of the pre-, peri- and postoperative factors that have been studied in conjunction with root canal treatments the restoration of the tooth is the factor that has been most extensively studied. Many studies imply that root filled teeth restored with indirect restorations have a better survival than teeth restored with direct restorations, it is not possible to determine whether this indeed is a prognostic factor. Abstract
AIMS This systematic review aimed to compare the efficiency of orifice barriers in preventing coronal microleakage in vitro. METHODS Articles published in English, German and Chinese were searched for studies describing microleakage assays for the bacterial penetration of root canal-treated teeth in vitro. The final sample included 18 articles for review and meta-analysis. Risk ratios and confidence intervals were determined for dichotomous variables. Ten publications using bacterial leakage models contributed to the meta-analysis. RESULTS The addition of orifice barriers to a root canal filling was overall effective, shown by risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) demonstrating reduced microleakage with glass ionomer cement (GIC) (RR 0.37, 95% CI 0.26-0.53, P < 0.001), resin-modified GIC (RR 0.32, 95% CI 0.15-0.67, P = 0.01), composite resin (RR 0.54, 95% CI 0.38-0.75, P < 0.001), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) (RR 0.25, 95% CI 0.12-0.52, P < 0.001) and Cavit (RR 0.23, 95% CI 0.14-0.39, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences between GIC, resin-modified GIC, composite resin and MTA orifice barriers. CONCLUSIONS Placement of an orifice barrier over the root canal filling is effective in the prevention of coronal microleakage in vitro. Other parameters may also affect the effectiveness of orifice barriers, including thickness and duration of exposure to the oral environment. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to describe the pattern of coronal restoration use among different dental specialties after root canal obturation in two governmental hospitals in Riyadh. MATERIALS AND METHODS Electronic dental records at King Abdul-Aziz Medical City and University Dental Hospital were reviewed. Teeth that underwent initial root canal treatment on a permanent tooth for obturation using gutta-percha between April 2019 and June 2019 were included. The collected data included the type of material used for coronal restoration after RCT, immediate post-space preparation, cotton pellet placement, the clinical title and specialty of the treating physician, and the center where treatment was performed. Excel was used for data collection. IBM SPSS was used for descriptive and interferential analyses. RESULTS A total of 763 patients were included in the study, in which the double seal technique was used in 56% of the patients, followed by Cavit, which was used in approximately 17% of the patients. Post space was prepared immediately after root canal treatment in 49 patients, and only 17 teeth received the final post, whereas post space was temporized for the rest of the prepared teeth and received the final post at the following visits. Significant relations were found between the type of material used and the clinical title of the treating physician and between the material of choice and the specialty of the dentist. The double seal was the technique of choice among endodontists and restorative dentists, whereas advanced general dentists frequently used Cavit. The least used materials were IRM, amalgam, and Ketac Silver. CONCLUSION The double seal technique was found to be the most commonly used method to achieve a coronal seal, followed by Cavit. Other materials used after RCT, in sequential order based on the frequency of use, were GIC, temporary crowns, resin composite, RMGIC, prefabricated post with composite buildup, IRM, amalgam, and Ketac Silver.

Abstract
Background Tooth fractures can occur after temporary inter-appointment endodontic filling, resulting in not preserving and thus extraction of the affected tooth. The purpose of this investigation was therefore to evaluate the tooth substance fracture potential given by the expansion of endodontic temporary filling materials. Methods
Tooth and access cavities were prepared in 80 mandibular molars. Four groups of 20 teeth each (Cavit, Cavit W and Coltosol F and control) were included. To simulate a clinical situation, the teeth were endodontically pre-treated and a calcium hydroxide dressing was placed. The cavities were filled with the corresponding temporary filling material, with exception of the control group, and kept submerged in distilled water for 15 days. The teeth were examined every 24 h by two calibrated observers under a stereomicroscope (7.5×), fractures of the temporary filling material and tooth structure were photo-documented, and the results statistically analyzed. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis were calculated to illustrate (survival = no fracture) probabilities to evaluate the time when the temporary filling material, tooth structure or both together occurred. Log-rank test was performed in order to assess significant differences between the materials and the subgroups used. Results Fractures were observed only in the Coltosol F group (p < 0.01), at the end of the observation period, a total of 13 teeth (65%) showed temporary filling material and eight teeth (40%) showed tooth structure fractures. No fractures in the pulp chamber area were observed at the end of the observation period in any group. Conclusions Within the limitations of the current in vitro study, the results obtained suggest that tooth structure fractures caused by a temporary filling material can occur during endodontic treatment, thus compromising the success of the treatment.

Abstract
Introduction: Coronal leakage and reinfection after root canal therapy is an important reason for endodontic failure. Zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) -based materials are often used as a coronal seal to prevent secondary infection. The antibacterial effect of ZOE cement is mainly due to leaching of eugenol from the material, but the effect is reported to decrease over time. Chitosan (CH) is a natural polymer with antibacterial properties. The aim of the study was to investigate if incorporation of (CH) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) in a ZOE-based material improved both the immediate and sustained antibacterial properties of the material. Methods:Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus epidermidis was used to investigate the antibacterial effect of the materials in a modified direct contact test (MDCT) immediately after setting and after storage for 18 weeks in water. Leaching per week of eugenol from the materials was quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The effect of eugenol on growth of bacteria was measured by reading of optical density at 600 nm after 18 h growth. Mechanical properties were investigated in a compressive strength test according to ISO 3107. Results: The present study showed that a ZOE-based material has antibacterial activity both as freshly prepared and after immersion in water for 18 weeks. Incorporating CH or COS may increase the antibacterial effect depending on the bacterial species investigated. The amount of leached eugenol did not differ between materials or during or after storage. S. mutans showed the highest susceptibility to eugenol of the three species investigated. Modification of the materials with CH or COS reduced the compressive strength, but the requirements in ISO 3017 were still met.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The objective of this study was to determine the effect of delayed placement of the core/post and crown on the outcomes of nonsurgical root canal therapy (NSRCT). METHODS According to the Delta Dental of Wisconsin claims database, 160,040 NSRCTs were completed with a core/post and a crown placed before the end of the continuous coverage period or occurrence of an untoward event. Untoward events were defined as a retreatment, apicoectomy, or extraction as defined by the Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature. Statistical analysis was performed by using a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS The survival rate from the time of crown placement to an untoward event was 99.1% at 1 year, 96.0% at 3 years, 92.3% at 5 years, and 83.8% at 10 years. Failure rates were greater when a core/post was placed more than 60 days after the NSRCT (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.08) and when the crown was placed more than 60 days after the core/post placement (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.14). Overall, the survival rates of NSRCT were greater when performed by an endodontist versus other providers. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the information available from insurance claims data, this study shows that the long-term survival rates of initial endodontic therapy are adversely affected by the delayed placement of the final restoration and full coverage crown.

Abstract
Introduction: This in vitro study compared the coronal microleakage of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement and Biodentine as intra-orifice barriers. Methods and Materials: The study was conducted on 76 extracted single-canal human teeth. Their root canals were prepared using ProTaper rotary files and filled with gutta percha and AH-26 sealer using lateral condensation technique. Coronal 3 mm of the gutta percha was removed from the root canals and replaced randomly with MTA, CEM cement or Biodentine in the three experimental groups (n=22). A positive and a negative control group were also included (n=5). The entire root surfaces of all teeth were covered with two layers of nail varnish in such a way that only the access openings were not coated. In the negative control group, the access opening was also coated with nail varnish. All teeth were immersed in India ink and after clearing, the samples were evaluated under a stereomicroscope under ×10 magnification to assess the degree of dye penetration. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: The negative control group showed no leakage while the positive control group showed significantly higher microleakage than the test groups (P>0.05). CEM cement had the lowest (0.175±0.068 mm) and MTA showed the highest dye penetration (0.238±0.159 mm) among the experimental groups; although these differences were not statistically significant (P=0.313). Conclusion: CEM cement exhibited the least microleakage as an intra-orifice barrier in endodontically treated teeth.

Abstract
Background/purpose Providing a tight coronal seal is key for the success of endodontic treatment, therefore the study aimed to assess bacterial microleakage of materials used for short- and long-term temporization. Materials and methods One hundred and twenty-eight human upper-third molars were divided into six experimental groups (n = 20) and two control groups: negative (n = 4) and positive (n = 4). The standardized access cavities were prepared and filled with: (1) Cavit; (2) Fuji II LC; (3) Fuji IX; (4) Voco Clip; (5) AdheSE and Tetric EvoCeram; (6) Excite and Tetric EvoCeram. The crown of each tooth was sectioned to obtain 5.5-mm-high disks, which were assembled in a standard setup for bacterial microleakage studies using Streptococcus mutans. The monitoring lasted 90 days. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed. Results The lowest amount of leaking samples was found in AdheSE and Tetric EvoCeram (31.3%), Cavit (33.3%), and Excite and Tetric EvoCeram groups (35.3%), followed by Fuji II LC (66.7%), Voco Clip (83.3%). and Fuji IX (88.2%) groups. According to the day of microleakage, materials could be classified in three groups with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). In the first group were Cavit (70 days), AdheSE and Tetric EvoCeram (68 days), and Excite and Tetric EvoCeram (65 days), in the second group were Voco Clip (44 days) and Fuji II LC (43 days), and in the third group was Fuji IX (21 days). Conclusion None of the tested materials were able to completely prevent bacterial microleakage. Adhesively bonded composites and Cavit offer better sealing compared with glass ionomer cements, resin modified glass ionomer cements, and composites without the use of an adhesive system.

Abstract
Introduction: The present in vitro study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the sealing ability of hybrid composite, glass ionomer cement type II, silver amalgam and Ketac molar as permanent filling material in root canal treated teeth. Methodology: Hundred maxillary central incisors were selected for the study. After cleaning all the teeth, root canal treatment was carried out on all of them. The crown portion was cut-off at the cervical level. Three millimeter of coronal Gutta-percha was replaced by four different restorative materials. Then after thermocycling, samples were immersed in dye for 2 weeks. The amount of dye penetration was measured using stereomicroscope. Data were collected and analyzed statistically with ANOVA test and Student–Newman–Keuls test. Results: Coronal leakage was seen in all groups. Composite hybrid showed least amount of microleakage as compared to the other three experimental groups, and Ketac molar showed more leakage compared to other experimental groups. Conclusion: This study showed that hybrid composites offer better sealing ability compared to other materials tested in this study.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to
compare the sealing ability of temporary
restorative materials at 24 hrs and 1 week. Materials and Methods: Endodontic access cavities
were prepared in 56 extracted lower incisor-teeth
and divided into 5 groups (n=10). Standard 5 mm
deep access preparations were completed and root
canals were prepared to size ISO #30 file. The access
cavities were restored as follows: Group 1: temporary
restorative material (Ceivitron); Group 2: glass ionomer
cement (Fuji II); Group 3: zinc oxide-eugenol cement
(IRM); Group 4: zinc phosphate cement (Adhesor);
Group 5: polytetrafluoroetylene tape (PTFE). The
quality of the coronal sealing of each specimen was
measured (24 hrs and 1 week) using fluid transport
model. The data was analyzed with repeated
measurements ANOVA, Tukey' HSD and Paired samples T-Tests. Results: A significant difference was found among
the groups at all time-periods (p<0.05). At 24 hrs,
PTFE showed similar leakage with Ceivitron, IRM,
and Fuji II but it showed higher leakage than Adhesor.
At 1 week, Ceivitron showed higher leakage than
PTFE, meanwhile PTFE showed similar leakage
with IRM, Fuji II, and Adhesor (p>0.05). Sealing
ability of IRM and PTFE groups significantly
increased by time (p<0.05 and p<0.001 respectively). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, PTFE
showed an acceptable short-term sealing capability
when compared to the other commonly used temporary
restorative materials at 1 week measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to analyze the sealing ability of different temporary endodontic materials over a 6-week period using a glucose penetration model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Standardized holes were formed on 48 dentin discs from human premolars. The thicknesses of the specimens were distributed evenly to 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm. Prepared dentin specimens were randomly assigned into six groups (n = 7) and the holes in the dentin specimens were filled with two kinds of temporary filling materials as per the manufacturers' instructions as follows: Caviton (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and IRM (Dentsply International Inc., Milford, DE) 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm. The remaining specimens were used as positive and negative controls and all specimens underwent thermocycling (1000; 5-55°C). The sealing ability of all samples was evaluated using the leakage model for glucose. The samples were analyzed by a spectrophotometer in quantitative glucose microleakage test over a period of 6 weeks. As a statistical inference, a mixed effect analysis was applied to analyze serial measurements over time. RESULTS The Caviton groups showed less glucose penetration in comparison with the IRM groups. The Caviton 4 mm group demonstrated relatively low glucose leakage over the test period. High glucose leakage was detected throughout the test period in all IRM groups. The glucose leakage level increased after 1 week in the Caviton 2 mm group and after 4 weeks in the Caviton 3 mm and 4 mm groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Caviton had better sealing ability than IRM in the glucose penetration model during 6 weeks. Temporary filling of Caviton to at least 3 mm in thickness is necessary and temporary filling periods should not exceed 4 weeks.

Abstract
This study sought to investigate the setting progress and sealing ability of hydraulic temporary sealing materials used in endodontic treatment: Lumicon, Caviton, and HY-Seal. To evaluate setting progress, the materials were filled into glass tubes with one end sealed and immersed in water. After immersion, a measurement apparatus was inserted from the non-immersed end and the set area was determined by subtracting the unset area from the sample thickness. To evaluate sealing ability, materials were filled into glass tubes and divided into four groups based on different immersion times. Thermal cycling and dye penetration were performed. At 7 days, the setting depths of HY-Seal and Caviton were almost equivalent to full sample thickness, while that of Lumicon was only half of full sample thickness (p < 0.01). On sealing ability, Lumicon ranked the highest followed by Caviton, whereas HY-Seal was unstable (p < 0.01). These results suggested that there was no correlation between setting progress and sealing ability.

Abstract
Amalgam has been used for the restoration of teeth for well over 100 years, and is the most successful of the direct restorative materials with respect to longevity. Despite the increasing use of tooth-coloured materials, with advantages of aesthetics and adhesion, amalgam is one of the most widely used dental restorative materials. One of the principal disadvantages of amalgam, apart from aesthetics, is that it may have adverse biological effects, both locally and systemically. Locally, it can cause an erythematous lesion on the adjacent oral soft tissues (tongue and buccal mucosa), and systemically free mercury in the amalgam may give rise to a hypersensitivity reaction. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature concerning the local adverse reactions to dental amalgam. The focus will be on the reactions of the oral mucosa, and brief consideration will be given to laboratory cytotoxicity of dental amalgam and its components, and to the 'amalgam tattoo'.

Abstract
DATA SOURCES Searches for relevant studies were made using the Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register, CENTRAL, Medline and Embase. The major oral medicine journals were also searched by hand and reference lists of included studies and reviews were checked. Endodontics experts were contacted by e-mail. No language limitations were imposed. STUDY SELECTION Randomised controlled trials (RCT) and quasi-RCT of root canal treatment were included. Surgical endodontic treatment was excluded. The outcomes considered were the number of teeth extracted for endodontic problems; radiological success (absence of any periapical radiolucency) after at least 1 year; postoperative pain; painkiller use; swelling; or sinus track formation. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Data were collected using a specific extraction form. The validity of the studies included was assessed on the basis of allocation concealment, blindness of the study, and loss of participants. Data were analysed by calculating risk ratios. When valid and relevant data were collected, a meta-analysis of the data was undertaken. RESULTS Twelve RCT were included in the review. Four studies had a low risk of bias, four a moderate risk, and another four had a high risk of bias. The frequency of radiological success and immediate postoperative pain were not significantly different between single- and multiple-visit root canal treatments. People who had single-visit treatment reported a higher frequency of painkiller use and swelling, but the results for swelling were not significantly different between the two groups. We found no study that included tooth loss and sinus track formation among its primary outcomes. CONCLUSIONS No difference exists in the effectiveness of root canal treatment, in terms of radiological success, between single- and multiple-visit treatments. Most short- and long-term complications are also similar in terms of frequency, although patients undergoing a single visit may experience a slightly higher frequency of swelling and are significantly more likely to take painkillers.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to design an experimental model that allowed extensive endodontic interim restorations to be tested for dye penetration while under simulated masticatory load. Extracted premolar teeth had standardized mesio-occluso-distal cavities prepared, and the root canals were instrumented. A cotton wool pellet was placed in the pulp chamber, and the cavities were restored with Cavit, IRM, Ketac-Fil Plus, Ketac-Silver, or composite resin (Z100). They were subjected to the equivalent of 3 months of clinical load while exposed to methylene blue dye. Results of this study could not support IRM as a suitable interim endodontic restorative material to use in extensive cavities. The dye penetration in the Ketac-Fil Plus and Ketac-Silver specimens was not predictable, and the results suggested Cavit and Z100 composite resin require further investigations as potentially useful materials for this purpose.

Abstract
One of the main aims of endodontic treatment is to eliminate micro-organisms from within the root canal system. A further aim is to prevent the ingress of any further bacteria during and after treatment. These aims are usually achieved by various means and stages throughout the treatment process. Endodontic treatment is usually performed on teeth that have lost the integrity of the external coronal tooth structure which has allowed bacteria to enter the tooth and ultimately reach the pulp space. Further opening of the tooth occurs when an endodontic access cavity is made to allow treatment to be performed. Hence, there will always be a need for interim and temporary restoration of teeth undergoing endodontic treatment. Many different materials and techniques have been proposed, and these proposals have been based on many research reports. The purposes of this article are to review the literature regarding the use of interim and temporary restorations, and to provide recommendations regarding such restorations for clinicians to follow when providing endodontic treatment.

Abstract
There were 130 single roots randomly assigned to one of 12 experimental or two control groups. Forty specimens each were sealed with 1, 2, 3, or 4 mm of Cavit, ProRoot MTA, or Tetric. After creation of a uniform orifice diameter, the smear layer was removed and the canal systems obturated using warm lateral compaction of gutta-percha (GP). GP was removed to the experimental depth, experimental materials placed in the orifice, and roots submerged in India ink in a vacuum flask. Specimens were demineralized and leakage measured using a 10x stereomicroscope and graded for depth of leakage by one calibrated, blinded rater. There was no significant interaction (p > 0.05) between test materials and orifice depths, nor main effect of orifice depth (p > 0.05). However, there was a statistically significant main effect of test materials with Tetric demonstrating a significantly better seal than Pro Root or Cavit (p < 0.0001) irrespective of orifice depth.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial properties of temporary fillings. The direct contact test (DCT) was used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of Revoltek LC, Tempit, Systemp inlay, and IRM. These were tested in contact with Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. The materials were examined immediately after setting, 1, 7, 14, and 30 days after aging in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Statistical analysis included two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey multiple comparison. Systemp inlay, Tempit, and IRM exhibited antibacterial properties when in contact with S. mutans for at least 7 days, Tempit and IRM sustained this ability for at least 14 days. When in contact with E. faecalis Tempit and IRM were antibacterial immediately after setting, IRM sustained this ability for at least 1 day. Our study suggests that the difference in temporary filling materials may influence which microorganism will be able to invade the root canal system.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of Emdogain Gel (Biora AB, Malmo, Sweden), consisting of a enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in a propylene glycol alginate (PGA) vehicle, on experimentally exposed human pulps and to register postoperative symptoms. METHODOLOGY Nine pairs of contralateral premolars scheduled for extraction on orthodontic indications were included. Following a superficial pulp amputation performed with a small (016) diamond bur, either EMDgel or a mix of calcium hydroxide and sterile saline was placed at random in contact with the pulp wound. The subjects made records of symptoms and were also interviewed about pain/discomfort by a blinded examiner. After 12 weeks the teeth were extracted, prepared and subjected to light microscopic examination in which the inflammation and newly formed hard tissue in the pulp were analysed. Immunohistochemistry was performed using affinity-purified rabbit anti-EMD polyclonal antibodies. RESULTS Postoperative symptoms were less frequent in the EMDgel-treated than in the calcium hydroxide-treated teeth, especially during the first six weeks. In the EMDgel-treated teeth, new tissue partly filled the space initially occupied by the gel and hard tissue was formed alongside the exposed dentine surfaces and in patches in the adjacent pulp tissue. EMD was detected in the areas where new hard tissue had been formed. The wound area of the EMDgel-treated teeth exhibited inflammation in the majority of the teeth whereas less inflammation was seen in the calcium hydroxide-treated teeth where the hard tissue was formed as a bridge. CONCLUSIONS In the EMDgel-treated teeth, postoperative symptoms were less frequent and the amount and pattern of hard tissue formation were markedly different than in the teeth treated with calcium hydroxide. However, the operative procedure and the formulation with EMD in a PGA vehicle do not seem to be effective for the formation of a hard tissue barrier.

Abstract
The complexity of restorative dentistry has increased greatly in recent years, with the myriad of products used in "adhesive dentistry." So too has the "simple" matter of restoring access cavities after completion of endodontic treatment. This review discusses current methods of "bonding" to tooth structure, ceramic materials, and metals, with emphasis on those aspects that are important to endodontics. Specific materials, procedures and major decision making elements are discussed, as well as how to avoid problems in compatibility between endodontic and restorative materials.

Abstract
In this study, optical spectroscopy was used to monitor a chromogenic, enzyme-substrate reaction for the rapid identification of Enterococcus faecalis. The detection system, comprising a miniature spectrophotometer and an accompanying data acquisition system, was placed in an incubator. During testing, a 3-ml test sample was placed in a cuvette within the spectrophotometer. This permitted online, real-time, and remote analysis of spectral signature needed to monitor the bacteria. It was observed that the absorption peak intensity increased conspicuously 3.5 h after inoculation and through the entire period of testing. A linear-regression analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between the increase in absorption peak intensity at 610 nm (r = 0.9389) and 653 nm (r = 0.9387) with the formation of colony-forming units.
