Abstract
Antidepressant-related sexual dysfunction is one of the most frequently met adverse effects for individuals suffering from major depressive disorder. When primary prevention by non-pharmacological measures fails, empirical coping strategies might be proposed. In this article, we present a brief overview of pharmacological strategies for antidepressant-related sexual dysfunction, considering antidepressants and conceivable corrective medications. We suggest dividing these strategies into three groups: (1) tapering (dose reduction, therapeutic window or short-term treatment interruption); (2) maintenance (focusing on spontaneous remission); (3) optimizing treatment (substitution for another antidepressant or addition of treatments to correct sexual side effects). Whichever strategy is selected, we encourage the clinician to propose the most adequate therapeutic option for the patient, while considering the efficacy and overall tolerance of the current antidepressant strategy, the affected phase of sexuality and patient preferences and gender. This summary is limited to antidepressant treatments and correctors marketed in France and aimed at a clinician reading to help manage patients suffering from antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a symptom of depression in ≈70% of patients presenting with major depressive disorder (MDD). Antidepressant medications (AD) and adjunctive treatments may further contribute to SD and complicate evaluation and management. AREAS COVERED A systematic literature search of PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE and Cochrane databases for MDD, SD, classes of antidepressants, etc. was performed with a focus on 2014 to June 2021. SSRIs are associated with 70% treatment-emergent sexual dysfunction (TESD), SNRIs and tricyclics have rates of TESD of 40 - 45%, and antidepressant medications without SRI effects or with additional unique mechanisms of action have rates similar to placebo (<10%). Appropriate assessment at baseline and throughout treatment, consideration of patient preferences in prescribing, addressing modifiable factors (comorbid medical/psychiatric conditions, substances, relationship difficulties), and utilizing management strategies of switching to an AD with less SD, adding an antidote/adjunctive therapy or lowering the dose are discussed. EXPERT OPINION MDD and antidepressant treatment contribute to SD in a high percentage of patients. Treating to remission reduces SD as a symptom of depression. Frequent assessment and targeted management strategies may be effective in preventing or addressing SD. Secondary outcomes like impact on adherence, relationships and self-image should also be considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the prevalence of antidepressant-related sexual side effects, comparisons of treatments for these problematic side effects are lacking. METHODS To address this, we performed a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis to compare interventions for antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction in adults. Using PubMed and clinicaltrials.gov, we identified published and unpublished prospective treatment trials from 1985 to September 2020 (primary outcome: the Arizona sexual experience scale [ASEX] score). The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation framework. RESULTS We identified 57 citations (27 randomized controlled trials, 66 treatment arms, 27 open-label trials, and 3 crossover trials) that evaluated 33 interventions (3108 patients). In the systematic review, 44% (25/57) of trials reported successful interventions; this was more common in open-label (70%, 19/27) compared to placebo-controlled studies (22%, 6/27). In the meta-analysis of placebo-controlled studies that used the ASEX (N = 8), pycnogenol was superior to placebo (standardized mean difference: -1.8, 95% credible interval [CrI]: [-3.7 to 0.0]) and there was evidence that, at a 6% threshold, sildenafil improved sexual dysfunction (standardized mean difference: -1.2, 95% CrI [-2.5 to 0.1]). In the meta-analysis including single-arm studies (15 studies), treatment response was more common with sildenafil, tianeptine, maca, tiagabine, and mirtazapine compared to placebo, but these differences failed to reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS While heterogeneity across randomized controlled trials complicates identifying the single best intervention, multiple trials suggest that sildenafil ameliorates antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. More randomized controlled trials are needed to examine the putative efficacy of other interventions.

Abstract
Any type of sexual dysfunction is an important problem in half of the patients with depressive disorder. On the other hand, one to a quarter of people without any depressive disorder experience sexual dysfunction. Antidepressant agents can lead to all types of sexual side effects including arousal, libido, orgasm and ejaculation problems. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a widely used class of drugs which are prescribed for the treatment of a variety of disorders, including major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and impulse control disorders. It has been reported that one in eight people have utilized one of the SSRIs in the past 10 years. Some studies reported up to 80% of SSRI-induced sexual side effects. Management of SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction seems to be complex and hard. In this paper, SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and new perspectives in the management of this problem were reviewed.

Abstract
The alcohol research field has amassed an impressive number of gene expression datasets spanning key brain areas for addiction, species (humans as well as multiple animal models), and stages in the addiction cycle (binge/intoxication, withdrawal/negative effect, and preoccupation/anticipation). These data have improved our understanding of the molecular adaptations that eventually lead to dysregulation of brain function and the chronic, relapsing disorder of addiction. Identification of new medications to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD) will likely benefit from the integration of genetic, genomic, and behavioral information included in these important datasets. Systems pharmacology considers drug effects as the outcome of the complex network of interactions a drug has rather than a single drug-molecule interaction. Computational strategies based on this principle that integrate gene expression signatures of pharmaceuticals and disease states have shown promise for identifying treatments that ameliorate disease symptoms (called in silico gene mapping or connectivity mapping). In this review, we suggest that gene expression profiling for in silico mapping is critical to improve drug repurposing and discovery for AUD and other psychiatric illnesses. We highlight studies that successfully apply gene mapping computational approaches to identify or repurpose pharmaceutical treatments for psychiatric illnesses. Furthermore, we address important challenges that must be overcome to maximize the potential of these strategies to translate to the clinic and improve healthcare outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction (including altered sexual desire, orgasmic and ejaculatory dysfunction, erectile and other problems) is a relatively common side effect of antidepressant medication. These sexual side effects may compromise a person's lifestyle and result in a lack of compliance with the prescribed antidepressant to the detriment of the person's mental health. A wide range of management strategies are possible to address this problem, including behavioural, psychological and pharmacological approaches. OBJECTIVES 1. To determine the effectiveness of management strategies for sexual dysfunction caused by antidepressants.2. To determine the adverse effects and acceptability of the different management strategies. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Group's Specialized Register (CCDANCTR, to 1 January 2013), which includes relevant randomised controlled trials from the following bibliographic databases: The Cochrane Library (all years), EMBASE (1974 to date), MEDLINE (1950 to date) and PsycINFO (1967 to date). Additional searches were carried out by the author team on the same biomedical databases (using terms for 'sexual dysfunction' only) together with CINAHL (1982 to Jan 2012). The reference lists of reports of all included studies were screened. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials that compared management strategies for antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction versus placebo or any alternative strategy. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently extracted data and assessed trial quality. Study authors were contacted for additional information. MAIN RESULTS We included 23 trials involving 1886 people in this updated review. Twenty-two of these trials investigated the addition of medication to treat the identified dysfunction, with most agents studied in only single studies. One study investigated switching to an alternative antidepressant.In men, data for the phosphodiesterase inhibitors sildenafil (three studies, 255 participants) and tadalafil (one study, 54 participants) indicated they led to a greater improvement in erectile function than placebo. Combined data from three sildenafil studies found benefit over placebo on International Index of Erectile Function ratings of ability to achieve (MD 1.04, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.44), and maintain erections (MD 1.18, 95% CI 0.78 to 1.59). A single point improvement on these ratings is equivalent to an improvement in frequency from 'sometimes' to 'most times'. Men receiving tadalafil were more likely to report improved erectile function (RR 11.50, 95% CI 3.03 to 43.67). For women it remains uncertain whether sildenafil is more effective than placebo. Unpublished data could reduce this uncertainty.Data from three studies in men and women of bupropion 150 mg twice daily indicate a benefit over placebo on rating scale scores (SMD 1.60, 95% CI 1.40 to 1.81), but response rates in two studies of bupropion 150 mg once daily demonstrated no statistically significant difference in effect (RR 0.62, 95% CI 0.09 to 4.41).Other augmentation strategies failed to demonstrate significant improvements in sexual dysfunction compared with placebo.One trial involving 75 people with sexual dysfunction due to sertraline assessed the effect of changing antidepressant. Switching to nefazodone was significantly less likely to result in the re-emergence of sexual dysfunction than restarting sertraline (RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.19 to 0.60), however, nefazodone is no longer available for clinical use.There is an absence of randomised trials assessing the effects of switching to currently-available antidepressant agents with lower rates of adverse sexual effects, the role of psychological or mechanical interventions, or of techniques such as drug holidays.We identified no data for any of the strategies included in the trials assessed that indicated that they led to a worsening of psychiatric symptoms. However, the relatively small numbers assessed for many of the interventions studied means that the possibility of such an effect cannot confidently be excluded in all cases.Given the small numbers of studies assessing most of the strategies assessed, the presence of any unpublished trials could have substantial effects on estimates of effect. In some cases, only results from particular items or subscales within ratings scales are available. It is likely that this could act to bias estimates of effect obtained, increasing apparent effectiveness. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The evidence currently available is rather limited. For men with antidepressant-induced erectile dysfunction, the addition of sildenafil or tadalafil appears to be an effective strategy. For women with antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction the addition of bupropion at higher doses appears to be the most promising approach studied so far.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Certain unknown aspects of ropinirole action, such as its antidepressant effect after chronic administration and on cotreatment with fluoxetine, remain to be evaluated, which formed the rationale for this study. METHODS Wistar rats of either sex (weighing 150-200 g) were used. In the dose-finding study, oral dose of ropinirole (20 mg/kg) was selected. This was combined with two different doses of fluoxetine (10 and 20 mg/kg). Their antidepressant-like effects were compared in acute and chronic forced-swim test (FST). Acute FST was conducted in two sessions after administration of three doses within 24 h. Chronic FST was conducted over 14 days. Drugs were administered each day for 14 days. Effect on locomotor activity was tested in OFT. RESULTS ANOVA with post hoc Tukey test was used. Dose-finding study of ropinirole showed that out of three doses, 20 mg/kg produced maximum reduction in immobility in acute FST (137±8 s). Coadministration of ropinirole with fluoxetine in acute FST further reduced immobility (107±8 s). This effect was more prominent in chronic forced-swim-stressed rats (74±2 s). Neither ropinirole nor its coadministration with fluoxetine increased locomotor activity in open-field test. CONCLUSIONS The potential of ropinirole to act as an antidepressant agent is proven by the reduction in immobility time in FST. Further, there is an augmentation of the effect of fluoxetine by ropinirole, suggesting synergistic interaction of dopamine and serotonin pathway in brain.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The monoamine neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine play an important role in many medical and psychological conditions, including sexual responsiveness and behavior. Pharmacological agents that modulate monoamines may help alleviate sexual dysfunction. AIMS To provide an overview of pharmacological agents that modulate monoamines and their use in the treatment of sexual dysfunction. METHODS EMBASE and PubMed search for articles published between 1950 and 2010 using key words "sexual dysfunction,""monoamines,""monoaminergic receptors," and "generic names for pharmacological agents." MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES To assess the literature evaluating the efficacy of monoamine pharmacologic agents used in the treatment of sexual dysfunction. RESULTS The literature primarily cites the use of monoaminergic agents to treat sexual side effects from serotonergic reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), with bupropion, buspirone and ropinirole providing the most convincing evidence. Controlled trials have shown that bupropion improves overall sexual dysfunction, but not frequency of sexual activity in depressed and nondepressed patients. Nefazodone and apomorphine have been used to treat sexual dysfunction, but their use is limited by significant side effect and safety profiles. New research on pharmacologic agents with subtype selectivity at dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors and those that possess dual mechanisms of action are being investigated. CONCLUSION There has been tremendous progress over the past 50 years in understanding the role of monoamines in sexual function and the effect of pharmacologic agents which stimulate or antagonize monoaminergic receptors on sexual dysfunction. Nevertheless, large, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies evaluating the efficacy of currently available agents in populations without comorbid disorders are limited, preventing adequate interpretation of data. Continued research on sexual function and specific receptor subtypes will result in the development of more selective pharmacologic agents with the goal of increasing efficacy without the dose-limiting side effects of nonselective agents.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of ropinirole on selected nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), including anxiety, depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances/excessive daytime sleepiness, and sexual functions. METHODS Forty-four consecutive PD patients with or without motor complications (MC+ group and MC- group, respectively); 6-month prospective study; scales administered in the "on" motor state: Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale, Epworth Sleep Scale, International Index of Erectile Function, and Female Sexual Function Index; serum sexual hormones collected. RESULTS The median ropinirole dose was 10 mg, and the median L-dopa dose was decreased in both groups. In addition to motor symptoms and motor complications improvement, both median HAMA and MADRS scores dropped significantly in MC+ group; patients in our MC- group had little or no anxiety and depression at the baseline visit. In men, the baseline anxiety score was negatively correlated with the serum testosterone level. We did not observe any changes in the scales assessing sleep and sexual functions. Changes in Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale III scores significantly correlated with ropinirole dosage. Changes in HAMA and MADRS correlated only with changes in Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale scores. CONCLUSION In addition to controlling motor symptoms, ropinirole improved both anxiety and depressive symptoms in PD patients with motor fluctuations and/or dyskinesias. Changes in mood and anxiety correlated with changes in sleep scores.

Abstract
RATIONALE Sexual dysfunction is associated with antidepressant discontinuation. Therefore, there is a need for models that predict antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. OBJECTIVE To develop a predictive method for evaluating antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were allowed access to sexually receptive females during a single overnight mating session and then treated with antidepressants known to produce differing levels of sexual dysfunction in the clinic. Two to three weeks later, following either acute, subchronic (7-day), or chronic (14-day) antidepressant treatment, rats were observed for penile erections (PE) in the presence of sexually receptive females that were not accessible for contact but served as visual, auditory, and olfactory stimuli in the testing area. RESULTS Chronic treatment of fluoxetine (10 mg/kg), desipramine (10 mg/kg), and bupropion (20 mg/kg) reduced the number of PE 71, 53, and 8%, respectively, relative to vehicle-treated rats. This rank order of the compounds' propensity for reducing PE is comparable to the rank order of the compounds' ability to produce sexual dysfunction during antidepressant treatment in the clinic. Additionally, drugs used to treat antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction in the clinic, such as sildenafil, yohimbine, and dopamine agonists, were also effective in attenuating the deficits in the number of noncontact PE produced by chronic fluoxetine treatment. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, this model represents a novel approach for predicting antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction in rats, which parallels the pattern of reports of sexual dysfunction in the clinic associated with different antidepressant treatments and the ability of adjunct treatment to reverse the sexual impairments produced by antidepressants.

Abstract
There have been significant advances in the treatment of depression since the serendipitous discovery that modulating monoaminergic neurotransmission may be a pathological underpinning of the disease. Despite these advances, particularly over the last 15years with the introduction of selective serotonin and/or norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), there still remain multiple unmet clinical needs that would represent substantial improvements to current treatment regimens. In terms of efficacy there have been improvements in the percentage of patients achieving remission but this can still be dramatically improved and, in fact, issues still remain with relapse. Furthermore, advances are still required in terms of improving the onset of efficacy as well as addressing the large proportion of patients who remain treatment resistant. While this is not well understood, collective research in the area suggests the disease is heterogeneous in terms of the multiple parameters related to etiology, pathology and response to pharmacological agents. In addition to efficacy further therapeutic advances will also need to address such issues as cognitive impairment, pain, sexual dysfunction, nausea and emesis, weight gain and potential cardiovascular effects. With these unmet needs in mind, the next generation of antidepressants will need to differentiate themselves from the current array of therapeutics for depression. There are multiple strategies for addressing unmet needs that are currently being investigated. These range from combination monoaminergic approaches to subtype selective agents to novel targets that include mechanisms to modulate neuropeptides and excitatory amino acids (EAA). This review will discuss the many facets of differentiation and potential strategies for the development of novel antidepressants.

Abstract
Limited clinical data are available on the use of dopamine agonists for the control of motor function and also for the treatment of depression. This study was performed to evaluate the potential effects of the dopamine receptor agonist rotigotine in rat models of anxiety and depression. After repeated administration at doses of 0.05, 0.5, 1, and 5 mg/kg, rotigotine increased spontaneous motor activity at the 5 mg/kg dose after 3-5 days of treatment. At lower doses, the drug had no effect on locomotor activity. After a single administration, rotigotine had no anxiolytic activity in rats during the elevated plus-maze test or the Geller-Seifter conflict test. In the behavioral despair test (also known as the forced swim test), the 5 mg/kg dose of rotigotine enhanced the mobility of rats. Rotigotine (0.5, 1, and 5 mg/kg/day for 5 days) reversed the active avoidance deficit of helpless rats in the learned helplessness test, as shown by a significant decrease in escape failures after 3 to 4 days (0.5 mg/kg/day), 5 days (1 mg/kg/day), and 3 to 5 days (5 mg/kg/day) of treatment. During open-field testing of rats subjected to olfactory bulbectomy and given a 14-day schedule of rotigotine (0.3 mg/kg every 2 days), hyperactivity reversed according to a U-shaped dose-response curve. These results suggest that rotigotine may have antidepressant properties at doses of 1 mg/kg and lower. Potential effects at doses of 5 mg/kg and higher may be masked by an effect of the compound whereby general locomotor activity is enhanced.

Abstract
Major depression is a debilitating and recurrent disorder with a substantial lifetime risk and a high social cost. Depressed patients generally display co-morbid symptoms, and depression frequently accompanies other serious disorders. Currently available drugs display limited efficacy and a pronounced delay to onset of action, and all provoke distressing side effects. Cloning of the human genome has fuelled expectations that symptomatic treatment may soon become more rapid and effective, and that depressive states may ultimately be "prevented" or "cured". In pursuing these objectives, in particular for genome-derived, non-monoaminergic targets, "specificity" of drug actions is often emphasized. That is, priority is afforded to agents that interact exclusively with a single site hypothesized as critically involved in the pathogenesis and/or control of depression. Certain highly selective drugs may prove effective, and they remain indispensable in the experimental (and clinical) evaluation of the significance of novel mechanisms. However, by analogy to other multifactorial disorders, "multi-target" agents may be better adapted to the improved treatment of depressive states. Support for this contention is garnered from a broad palette of observations, ranging from mechanisms of action of adjunctive drug combinations and electroconvulsive therapy to "network theory" analysis of the etiology and management of depressive states. The review also outlines opportunities to be exploited, and challenges to be addressed, in the discovery and characterization of drugs recognizing multiple targets. Finally, a diversity of multi-target strategies is proposed for the more efficacious and rapid control of core and co-morbid symptoms of depression, together with improved tolerance relative to currently available agents.

Abstract
Dopamine agonists have become indispensable in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. In every-day practice, however, the decision to select the best compound for an individual patient is rendered difficult because of the large number of substances available on the market. This review article provides a closer look at the experimental and clinical studies with ropinirole published so far. Ropinirole is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist which has been proven to be effective in both, monotherapy and combination therapy of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. In addition to ameliorating bradykinesia, rigor, and tremor, ropinirole facilitates the daily life and improves depressive moods of patients with Parkinson's disease. The long-term complications of levodopa are avoided, and problems commonly associated with levodopa treatment are reduced. Ropinirole appears to have a neuroprotective effect. In addition to Parkinson's disease, ropinirole has also been used successfully in the treatment of restless legs syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this open trial was to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of oral S-adenosyl-L-methionine as an antidepressant adjunct among partial and nonresponders to serotonin reuptake inhibitors or venlafaxine. METHOD Thirty antidepressant-treated adult outpatients with persisting major depressive disorder received 800 to 1600 mg of S-adenosyl-L-methionine tosylate over a 6-week trial. RESULTS Intent-to-treat analyses based on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale revealed a response rate of 50% and a remission rate of 43% following augmentation with S-adenosyl-L-methionine. Gastrointestinal symptoms and headaches were the most common side effects. CONCLUSION Augmentation of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or venlafaxine with S-adenosyl-L-methionine warrants a placebo-controlled trial in resistant depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction (including altered desire, orgasmic dysfunction, erectile and ejaculatory problems) is a relatively common side effect of antidepressant medication. These sexual side effects may compromise a person's lifestyle and result in a lack of compliance with the prescribed antidepressant to the detriment of the person's mental health. OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to assess the effectiveness of management strategies for sexual dysfunction caused by antidepressant medication. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the CCDANCTR (March 2003), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Cochrane Library issue 2, 2004), MEDLINE (1966 - June 2004), EMBASE (1980 - March 2004), CINAHL (1982 - March 2004), PsycINFO (1984 - March 2004) and the reference lists of articles. We also contacted pharmaceutical companies and experts in the field of sexology. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials comparing the management strategies for antidepressant induced sexual dysfunction were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed trial quality. Study authors were contacted for additional information. Adverse effect information was collected from the trials. MAIN RESULTS Fifteen trials involving 904 people were included. One trial involving 75 people with sexual dysfunction due to sertraline assessed changing antidepressant. Switching to nefazodone was significantly less likely to result in the re-emergence of sexual dysfunction than restarting sertraline (RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.15 - 0.6) and was not associated with any worsening of depression. Fourteen trials involving 829 people assessed the addition of other medication while continuing the same antidepressant. Meta-analysis of two trials involving 113 men with erectile dysfunction found that the addition of sildenafil resulted in less sexual dysfunction at endpoint on rating scales including the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF; WMD 19.36, 95% CI 15.00 to 23.72). There was no significant difference in dropout rates between sildenafil and placebo. One trial found the addition of bupropion led to improved scores on the Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire desire-frequency subscale (WMD 0.88, 95% CI 0.21 - 1.55). One trial found that the addition of tadalafil was associated with greater improvement in the erectile function domain of the IIEF than placebo (WMD 8.10; 95% CI 4.62 to 11.68). Other augmentation strategies failed to show statistically significant improvements in sexual dysfunction compared with placebo. REVIEWERS' CONCLUSIONS The currently available evidence is rather limited, with small numbers of trials assessing each strategy. However, while further randomised data is awaited, for men with antidepressant-induced erectile dysfunction, the addition of sildenafil appears to be an effective strategy.

Abstract
A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of granisetron for the treatment of antidepressant induced sexual dysfunction in women. Twelve women with antidepressant induced sexual dysfunction (AISD) were assigned granisetron (n=5) or placebo (n=7) in a 14-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. One participant in the granisetron group did not complete the study. Participants were assessed at baseline, day 7 and day 14 using the Feiger Sexual Function and Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale. No statistical differences were measured at baseline or at endpoint between the granisetron or placebo group. This study did not produce evidence supporting the usefulness of granisetron in AISD.

Abstract
Sexual dysfunction caused by psychotropic medications has become an increasingly important clinical topic. Only recently have we acknowledged the extent to which many psychotropic medications, especially antidepressants and antipsychotics, cause sexual side effects. Prevalence rates of sexual side effects are extraordinarily difficult to estimate due to a variety of factors, such as the effect of the disorder being treated, comorbid disorders and baseline sexual dysfunction. Among the antidepressants, those with strong serotonergic properties have the highest rate of sexual side effects. Among the antipsychotics, those with greater D(2) blockade leading to increased prolactin levels are probably associated with more sexual dysfunction. Treatment approaches have been poorly developed for both antidepressants and antipsychotics. Antidotes for antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction include bupropion, buspirone and sildenafil.
