Sun exposure to the eyes: predicted UV protection effectiveness of various sunglasses

The aim of this study was to assess solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) doses received by the eyes in different exposure situations, and to predict the sun protection effectiveness provided by various styles of sunglasses at facial, periorbital, and ocular skin zones including the cornea and accounting for different head positions. A 3D numeric model was optimized to predict direct, diffuse and reflected erythemally weighted UVR doses received at various skin zones. Precisely defined facial, periorbital, and ocular skin zones, sunglasses (goggles, medium-, and large-sized sunglasses) and three head positions were modeled to simulate daily (08:00-17:00) and midday (12:00-14:00) UVR doses. The shading from sunglasses' frame and lenses' UVR transmission were used to calculate a predictive protection factor (PPF [%]). Highest ocular daily UVR doses were estimated at the uncovered cornea (1718.4 J/m²). Least sun protection was provided by middle-sized sunglasses with highest midday dose at the white lateral (290.8 J/m²) and lateral periorbital zones (390.9 J/m²). Goggles reached almost 100% protection at all skin zones. Large-sized sunglasses were highly effective in winter; however, their effectiveness depended on diffuse UVR doses received. In "looking-up" head positions highest midday UVR doses were received at the unprotected cornea (908.1 J/m²), totally protected when large-sized sunglasses are used. All tested sunglass lenses fully blocked UVR. Sunglasses' protection effectiveness is strongly influenced by geometry, wearing position, head positions, and exposure conditions. Sunglasses do not totally block UVR and should be combined with additional protection means. 3D modeling allows estimating UVR exposure of highly sensitive small skin zones, chronically exposed and rarely assessed.

Intraocular and crystalline lens protection from ultraviolet damage

OBJECTIVES

Although the risks of excess solar ultraviolet (UV) exposure of the skin are well recognized, the need for eye protection is frequently overlooked, or when sunglasses are also recommended, specific guidance is wrong or is not explained. Guidance from the World Health Organization at its InterSun webpage advises people to wear "wrap-around" sunglasses under many conditions. The objective of this study was to examine the need for UV filtration in prescription lenses, contact lenses, and sunglasses.

METHODS

The geometry of UV exposure of both eyes, solar position, ground reflection, pupil size, and lid opening were studied. Because an accurate determination of cumulative ocular exposure is difficult, the cornea itself can serve as a biologic dosimeter, because photokeratitis is not experienced on a daily basis but does under certain ground-surface and sunlight conditions. From a knowledge of the UV-threshold dose required to produce photokeratitis, we have an upper level of routine ocular exposure to ambient UV.

RESULTS

From ambient UV measurements and observed photokeratitis, the upper limits of UV exposure of the crystalline lens or an intraocular lens implant are estimated. The risk of excess UV exposure of the germinative cells of the lens is greatest from the side. Sunglasses can actually increase UV exposure of the germinative region of the crystalline lens and the corneal limbus by disabling the eyes' natural protective mechanisms of lid closure and pupil constriction! The level of UV-A risk is difficult to define.

CONCLUSIONS

Proper UV-absorbing contact lenses offer the best mode for filtering needless exposure of UV radiation of the lens and limbus.

When yellow lights look red: tinted sunglasses on the railroads

PURPOSE

A major Canadian railway company purchased safety eyewear sunglasses that were purported to have a neutral gray tint and that met the North American occupational and fashion sunglass requirements for signal light transmittance. After several weeks, the company began to receive reliable reports from employees that the yellow wayside signal appeared red when viewed through these sunglasses. Furthermore, the lenses themselves appeared to have a greenish brown tint rather than gray as the labeling implied.

METHODS

The transmission properties of the lenses were measured with a spectrophotometer, and color shifts were calculated for both roadway and railway signal lights.

RESULTS

The lenses did have a brown tint and they did meet the North American and European occupational sunglass transmittance requirements for roadway traffic signal lights. However, they did not meet the Australian occupational requirements because the red signal visibility factor was too high. Calculations using typical railroad wayside signal lights showed that the lenses would shift the yellow signal chromaticity coordinates beyond the boundaries for the railway yellow signals and toward the red end of the International Commission on Illumination chromaticity diagram, confirming the employees' reports.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the lenses met the North American and European sunglass transmittance requirements for traffic signal lights, the results showed that these standards are inappropriate for the railroad environment because the yellow wayside signal lights are redder and smaller in angular size than typical North American and European traffic lights. Some suggestions on a modified transmittance requirement are given to avoid this problem in the future.

Photoprotection by window glass, automobile glass, and sunglasses

In daily activity, much time is spent indoors and in vehicles. Although the adverse effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation is now well recognized and active public education programs on photoprotection have been undertaken, the role of window glass in photoprotection has been rarely addressed. It has been known for some time that window glass filters out UVB and transmits UVA and visible light. Recent developments in the glass industry have resulted in glass that provides broad UV protection without the historically associated loss of visible light transmission. Factors affecting UV-protective properties of glass are glass type, glass color, interleave between glass, and glass coating. In this article, photoprotection by window glass, automobile glass, and sunglasses is reviewed.

Photoprotection

Many agents affect the transmission of ultraviolet light to human skin. These include naturally occurring photoprotective agents (ozone, pollutants, clouds, and fog), naturally occurring biologic agents (epidermal chromophores), physical photoprotective agents (clothing, hats, make-ups, sunglasses, and window glass), and ultraviolet light filters (sunscreen ingredients and sunless tanning agents). In addition, there are agents that can modulate the effects of ultraviolet light on the skin (antioxidants and others). All of the above are reviewed in this article.

Sunglasses and sunglass standards

Sunglasses and sunglass standards are reviewed from the point of view of the history of sunglasses and the development of sunglass standards. The need for eye protection from solar radiation is discussed and the provisions of the various national sunglass standards are discussed in relation to that need.

Photoprotection of the eye - UV radiation and sunglasses

Although most health scientists now agree that health risks to the skin (e.g., skin cancer) exist from exposure to the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight, a scientific consensus has not really been achieved vis-à-vis sunlight and ocular health. A growing number of scientists warn of hazards to the eye if ultraviolet radiation - and perhaps even shorter wavelength visible radiation also - is not filtered by lenses. Despite a substantial literature on the adverse effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and intense light upon ocular structures, particularly upon the retina, controversy still surrounds the question of whether the levels of natural and man-made light sources are damaging when encountered under normal viewing conditions. Although scientific evidence accumulates to indicate that chronic exposure conditions may accelerate ageing processes in ocular tissues, the quantitative question of "How much is safe?" remains to be answered conclusively.
