[Science and nursing science: What links, what issues and what future development for the discipline of nursing?]

This article examines the terms science, discipline and knowledge from the perspective of the use and advancement of knowledge in the discipline of nursing. It views the notion of organized knowledge as the foundation of a science as well as considering the use of scientific methods as imperative in any discipline that aims to contribute to the world of ideas by relying on rationality. This paper aims to trace the link between science and nursing science, to clarify scientific issues for nursing, and to begin thinking about understanding the concept of diversity and the effective contribution of doctoral training in nursing as a guarantee of the future evolution of this discipline.

Development of situation-specific theories: an integrative approach

One type of "ready-to-wear" theories that can bring about better nursing care outcomes regardless of their philosophical bases is situation-specific theories proposed by Im and Meleis in 1999. In this paper, some propositions for an integrative approach to the development of situation-specific theories are made. First, situation-specific theories are described as practice theories while they are compared with middle-range theories. Then the integrative approach is detailed, which includes (a) checking assumptions for theory development; (b) exploring through multiple sources; (c) theorizing; and (d) reporting, sharing, and validating. Finally, the paper concludes with suggestions for further development of the integrative approach.

Thought for application and application with thought: issues in theoretical thinking and practical wisdom

Both theoretical thinking and practical wisdom are used by health professionals in their clinical practice. Lately, discussion has centered on the abstract phrase "theory-practice gap." The health profession is not the only discipline that seeks unity in theory and practice issues. Education is also building bridges in this arena. One reoccurring myth is the notion that theory and practice are separate; as a result, this gives a mistaken impression that theory serves no purpose in practice. Discussion of the issues in this paper includes definitions of theoretical thinking and practical wisdom, theoretical and practical knowledge development, and relevance to health professional's education, practice and science. These issues must be communicated to practitioners, educators and theorists. A collective definition to begin communication is proposed and suggestions are offered for addressing key issues.

From practice to theory: tightening the link via three fieldwork strategies

BACKGROUND

Theory that is directly linked with clinical experience has far greater relevance for nursing practice; however, problems continue to persist with the establishment of that linkage. The use of fieldwork as a strategy for developing and linking theory has enormous potential for enhancing the number of theories that truly fit the clinical practice realities of nursing. Traditionally, fieldwork has been conducted in contexts that are unfamiliar to the researcher. However, nurses have a wealth of clinical understanding in their areas of practice. Conduct of inquiry in a familiar practice area may facilitate identification of significant, clinically relevant concepts and expedite theory development that is closely linked to nursing practice.

AIM OF THE PAPER

wo-step fieldwork approach and three specific strategies are presented that have been found useful for developing theory that is tightly aligned with nursing practice. The strategies of theoretical selectivity, theoretical integration, and theory creation are described and an example of each presented. The strategies are an extension of the Hybrid Model of Concept Development. These strategies identify alternative paths for concept clarification and theoretical congruence through fieldwork in clinical settings. The focus of theoretical selectivity is elaboration of concept definition with selection among theories. In contrast, the focus of theoretical integration is the linking of a central concept with an existing theory or perspective in the prefieldwork phase and then using the full fieldwork to evaluate its usefulness. Lastly, the theory creation strategy emphasizes describing a phenomenon of interest, identifying influencing factors, and beginning to create relational statements. It is closest to standard inductive theory development.
