Abstract
Deep burns damage the reticular dermis and may lead to the formation of hypertrophic scars. Compression therapy reduces local vascularity and realigns collagen fibers, resulting in esthetic and functional improvements. This study evaluated the effect of Kinesio tape compression with maximum mechanical tension on vascularity, pliability, and the height of hypertrophic scars following deep burns. A single-blind, randomized pilot clinical trial was carried out. The elastic compression of Kinesio tape was applied at maximum stretch in the intervention group (n = 11) and no stretch in the sham group (n = 11). Vascularity, pliability, and height (the primary outcomes) were evaluated at 0, 45, and 90 days using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS). The association between the VSS scores, the intervention and the evaluation moment were analyzed using linear mixed-effects regression models, while comparisons of means between the groups were performed using the Student's t-test. Significance was set at 5%. The mean VSS scores were similar between the groups. Significant improvement occurred in both groups when posttreatment and baseline scores were compared. No further improvement was found in the vascularity, pliability, or height of hypertrophic scars resulting from deep burns when an elastic compression of Kinesio tape was used at maximum tension compared to lesser mechanical tension.

Abstract
There is uncertainty whether postoperative application of paper tape (PT) improves scar aesthetics and reduces wound closure complications. This study aimed to review and assess the quality of applicable findings from studies investigating PT's efficacy. We queried PubMed and SCOPUS using the search terms "(("paper tape") AND (wound OR closure OR heal* OR complication OR skin OR prevent* OR scar*))." We excluded articles that were duplicates, basic science, or not clinically relevant. We assessed the level of evidence for each article using the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Rating Levels of Evidence and Grading Recommendations for Therapeutic Studies, ranging from I (highest) to V (lowest). Of 186 publications reviewed, we included eight studies in the literature review. Five of these studies reported statistically significant positive outcomes on scar aesthetics and wound closure associated with using PT. Using the ASPS rating system, we found that two studies were Level I, three studies were Level II, two studies were Level IV, and one study was Level V. Notably, heterogeneity in the study designs limited outcome comparison. The data from the studies included in this literature review support using PT to optimize scar and wound management. The lack of higher levels of evidence, however, suggests the need for additional randomized controlled trials to rigorously evaluate patient outcomes when using PT compared with other forms of adhesive dressings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Medical adhesives are used to secure wound care dressings and other critical devices to the skin. While high peel-strength adhesives provide more secure skin attachment, they are difficult to remove from the skin and are correlated with medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI), including skin tears, and an increased risk of infection. Lower-adhesion medical tapes may be applied to avoid MARSI, leading to dressing or device dislodgement and further medical complications. METHOD This paper reports on the clinical testing of a new, high-adhesion medical tape, ThermoTape (University of Washington, US), designed for low skin trauma upon release. ThermoTape was benchmarked with Tegaderm (3M, US) and Kind Removal Tape (KRT) (3M, US). All three tapes were applied to both the left and right forearm of healthy volunteers and were removed 24 hours later-the right arm without applying heat and the left arm by applying a heat pack for 30 seconds before removal. Tape wear, self-reported pain (0-10 scale) and skin redness 15 minutes after removal were recorded. RESULTS This was a 53-subject comparative, single-blind clinical trial. There were clinically and statistically significant results supporting reduced pain during removal of ThermoTape with warming, with an average 58% decrease in pain, paired with a statistically significant 45% reduction in skin redness (p<0.01 for both values). In contrast, there were statistically insignificant differences in pain and redness for removal of Tegaderm and KRT with warming. ThermoTape after warming, in comparison with Tegaderm without warming, produced a reduced pain score of >1 on the 0-10 Wong-Baker/Face pain scale, which was statistically significant (p<0.01). CONCLUSION These results provide compelling evidence that warming ThermoTape prior to removal can reduce pain and injury when compared with standard medical tapes. This could allow for stronger attachment of wound care dressings and critical medical devices while reducing cases of MARSI.

Abstract
Mechanical stress influences scarring of a surgical wound. Several lines have been proposed for the best excision direction. It is unknown if these lines still apply when the body posture changes. The objective is to measure the skin reaction force in four directions and determine the direction of least force. Secondary objective is to determine if the reaction force varies in a different body posture. Skin reaction force was measured with the compressiometer in 30 participants on four different locations (forearm/upper arm/shoulder blade/lower back) in four directions (0°-45°-90°-135°) and two body postures. The direction of least skin reaction force changed with a different body posture and was significant for the forearm (p < 0.01) and shoulder blade (p = 0.05) The skin reaction force in all four direction changed significantly in a different body posture, except the 45° line in the upper arm and shoulder blade. Our results demonstrate that the skin reaction force in four directions in four locations varies with change in body posture. Focus should therefore not only lay on choosing the right direction, but also on managing skin tension postoperatively.

Abstract
Background Following surgery or other types of trauma, scar formation occurs with wound healing because of the replacement of normal skin with fibrous tissue. The conversion of a normal scar to an abnormal scar usually occurs 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. Abnormal scars can be a source of patient dissatisfaction, especially following cosmetic surgical procedures. Therefore, supporting scars with tape after surgery is critical for reducing scar tension. The aim of this study was to determine the extent of patients’ satisfaction with their scar outcomes following microporous taping and to identify the determinants of scar satisfaction.Methods A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted to compare the scar satisfaction of postsurgical patients who underwent scar taping with microporous tape to those who did not. The scars were assessed at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery using the Patient Scar Assessment Scale (PSAS). The test group had microporous tape applied to their scars and the tape was worn 24 hours a day for a period of 6 months. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Categorical variables and mean PSAS scores were compared using the chi-square test and repeated-measures analysis of variance, respectively.Results At 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months the taped group had significantly lower PSAS scores and higher satisfaction scores than the control group. Scar thickness and pruritus were statistically significant determinants of patient satisfaction.Conclusions Microporous tape is an effective modality for improving scar satisfaction in postsurgical patients.

Abstract
Purpose To compare gluteal wound healing after dermis fat graft (DFG) implantation in patients with and without local application of kinesiotapes. Methods In this prospective, single-center analysis, 16 patients who underwent DFG implantation were randomized in two groups. Wound healing was compared 4–6 weeks after therapy and 3 months later (after application of 2 cycles of kinesiotaping for 2–3 weeks in the case and no specific therapy in the control group). Demographic data, patient content and wound healing were assessed. Scarring was graded (0–3) by evaluation of photodocumentation by 2 blinded, independent observers. Results Mean scar grading by both observers decreased from 2.31 ± 0.48 to 1.13 ± 0.72 in the case and from 2.38 ± 0.52 to 1.44 ± 0.50 in the control group with interobserver agreement on scar grading being substantial to almost perfect in both groups. Scar length decreased significantly in both groups (p = 0.008). Scar prominence decreased in 2/3 of cases in the case and 1/3 in the control group. Scar coloring significantly improved in the case group alone (p = 0.031). Conclusion No functionally impairing or painful scar developed. No adverse effects occurred after kinesiotaping. Gluteal scars shortened significantly over time and were significantly paler in the case group. Kinesiotaping may improve scar elevation over no specific scar therapy.

Abstract
Hypertrophic scars and keloids are caused by excessive tissue response to dermal injury due to local fibroblast proliferation and collagen overproduction. This response occurs because of pathologic wound healing due to dysregulation in the inflammatory, proliferative, and/or remodeling phase. Patients with hypertrophic scars or keloids report reduced quality of life, physical status, and psychological health. Hypertrophic scars or keloids will develop in 30 to 90% of individuals, and despite their prevalence, treatment remains a challenge. Of the treatments currently available for hypertrophic scars and keloids few have been adequately supported by studies with appropriate experimental design. Here, we aim to review the available literature to provide up-to-date information on the etiology, epidemiology, histology, pathophysiology, prevention, and management options available for the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids and highlight areas where further research is required.

Abstract
Background: Additional skin support is promising in scar management, especially for wounds under high tension. Options for effective skin support are limited. This study aimed to determine whether prolonged use of an adhesive wound closure (AWC) device prevents scar spread and improves final appearance. Patients and Methods: This is a split-wound randomized evaluator-blinded study of 14 patients with facial wounds under high tension. After surgical closure, one half of each wound was randomly allocated to receive either standard care or additional 3-month treatment with an AWC device. Scar width, scar scale, and side effects were evaluated 12 months after surgery. Results: A significant difference was observed in scar width between the treated and nontreated sites at 12-month, with a mean difference of 1.024 (95% confidence interval, 0.347-1.700) mm in favor of the treated group. Scar widths in both groups increased rapidly in the first month after surgery and gradually increased until the sixth month. Scale for vascularization and relief were significantly lower in the treated sites. No significant differences were found in complications between two groups. Conclusions and Relevance: Prolonged usage of the AWC device prevented scar spread at 12 months and improved final scar scores in vascularization and relief. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tapes have been used to aid fresh wound closure. For hypertrophic scars, the use of tapes as a therapy to reduce the mechanical forces that stimulate excessive and long-term scarring is yet to be evaluated. The aim of this comprehensive review was to explore the current clinical application of tapes, as a minimally invasive option, as purposed specifically for the management of hypertrophic scarring, regardless of scar causation. METHOD Databases were searched using MeSH terms including one identifier for hypertrophic scar and one for the intervention of taping. Studies included the following: patients who received tape for a minimum of 12 weeks as a method of wound closure specifically for the purpose of scar prevention; those who received tape as a method of scar management after scar formation; reported outcomes addressing subjective and/or objective scar appearance; and were available in English. RESULTS With respect to non-stretch tapes, their use for the prevention of linear surgical scarring is evident in reducing scar characteristics of height, colour and itch. Statistically significant results were found in median scar width, reduction in procedure times and overall scar rating. Tapes were predominately applied by participants themselves, and incidence of irritation was infrequently reported. After 12 months, significance with respect to scar pain, itch, thickness and overall scar elevation was reported in one study investigating paper tape. Two papers reported the use of high stretch tapes; however, subjective results limited formal analysis. Although the use of taping for abnormal hypertrophic scar management is in its infancy, emerging research indicates tapes with an element of stretch may have a positive impact. CONCLUSIONS Non-stretch tapes, for the prevention of linear surgical scarring, are effective in reducing scar characteristics of height, colour and itch. Paper tapes have shown effectiveness when applied during wound remodelling or even on mature scarring, with reported subjective changes in scar colour, thickness and pliability. Preliminary evidence of the benefits of high-stretch, elasticised tapes for scar management in the remodelling phase of wound healing have also been reported. LAY SUMMARY Patients are often concerned about unsightly scars that form on their bodies after trauma, especially burn injuries. These scars can be thick, red and raised on the skin, and can impact on the patient's quality of life. For some scars, the process of skin thickening continues for up to two years after an injury.Unfortunately, scar formation is a part of the body's healing process, whereby there is a constant pull or tension under and along the skin's surface. The use of simple tapes, such as microporetm, to help with wound closure are sometimes used as a therapy to reduce the tension on the skin's surface when a wound is healing to minimise scar formation. However, the effectiveness of taping has not been proven. This paper looks at the available evidence to support the use of taping to reduce scar features of height, thickness and colour. Initial evidence of mixed levels, suggests some benefits of tapes for scar management and show preliminary efficacy for reduction of scar height, thickness and colour. More research is required to determine the direct impact, comparison to other treatments available and patient viewpoint for this therapy.

BACKGROUND Venous leg ulcers, or static leg ulcers, are chronic wounds associated with ambulatory venous hypertension of the lower extremities as a consequence of venous valve reflux, reduce venous capacitance, poor calf venous pump, heart failure, or in conjunction with venous obstruction. A static ulcer with venous thrombosis in a pelvic or thigh vein responds favorably to anticoagulation agents. However, anticoagulation is less effective and even harmful when ambulatory venous hypertension has another cause such as venous reflux, poorly heart function, and poor calf venous pump. METHOD TRiggered Angiography Non-Contrast-Enhanced (TRANCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exploits differences in vascular signal intensity during the cardiac cycle for subsequent image subtraction, providing detailed radiation-free venograms without the use of contrast agents. The method is a new tool for evaluating the presence of thrombosis in the venous systems. TRANCE-MRI was employed to document the existence of venous thrombosis within the eight patients in this study. Subsequently, we used a wireless wearable near-infrared spectroscopy device to compare deep vein thrombosis-associated and non-deep vein thrombosis-associated static ulcers. The sampling depths were 5 and 10 mm, representing the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, respectively. RESULT There are four patients with venous leg ulcers proven with venous thrombosis by TRANCE-MRI and are classified as deep vein thrombosis group. Compared with the non-deep vein thrombosis group, the deep vein thrombosis group had less deoxyhemoglobin, less total hemoglobin, and a significantly lower H2O signal in the 5-mm sampling depth (dermis level). And eight health participants were included as control group. Wounded patients (including deep vein thrombosis and non-deep vein thrombosis patients) have higher H2O concentration on the 5-mm depth sampling than control group. In the 10-mm sampling depth (subcutaneous level), the deoxyhemoglobin and tissue oxygen saturation of the deep vein thrombosis group were lower than those of the non-deep vein thrombosis group, and the H2O concentration was higher than non-deep vein thrombosis group. Patients with static foot ulcers and deep vein thrombosis had similar oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, total hemoglobin, and tissue oxygen saturation than did those without deep vein thrombosis in 5-mm depth sampling (dermis level). Notably, the H2O signal of patients with non-deep vein thrombosis-associated static ulcers was higher for the 5-mm sampling depth. CONCLUSION In patients with static ulcers and deep vein thrombosis, the H2O level may be higher in the 10-mm sampling depth, indicating that those patients had more subcutaneous water. In patients with non-deep vein thrombosis static foot ulcer, the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) indicated worse fluid retention in the dermis level. The H2O value in the NIRS may be different owing to underline the cause of the venous leg ulcers.
